It’s our tradition that the last stanza of a hymn is sung in unison, so that I as the organist can change the harmonization and keep things interesting. Sometimes I know ahead of time what I’m going to do, and sometimes I make it up on the spot.On this particular morning I planned on being spontaneous. (Can spontaneity be planned?) When we got to the final stanza, I threw on the 16′ pedal reed and went to town.I don’t know if this is the case for all musicians, but while I’m playing my brain is working on several different levels. Most of these are involved in actually playing the music, but there’s also a running commentary on how things are going. This commentary is usually really boring: It’s going okay. It’s going okay. It’s going okay. Sometimes the messages are more interesting: Uh-oh. She just dropped her mute. I missed that chord; remember to circle it when we’re done. My page turner appears to be on fire.So: We’re in the final stanza of Jesus Shall Reign Where’er the Sun. Big, majestic hymn. Over a hundred congregants and choir members are enthusiastically singing in unison. I’m leading them from the organ with an improvised accompaniment that involves all of my limbs. It’s fair to say that I was concentrating hard.Suddenly the commentary part of my brain breaks in: Dude, your feet are totally playing Canon in D. Cool!Canon in D is the most famous work of Johann Pachelbel, a German composer who preceded Bach by a few decades. It’s overused at weddings, but it’s actually a really good piece of music. The original is for three violins and a basso continuo part, which would usually have been played by harpsichord and cello. In this case, the basso continuo plays the same eight measures again and again throughout the piece. This technique of repetition is called a ground bass. While that’s going on, the violins play several different themes on top of it.When I was improvising that Sunday, my feet had accidentally wandered into that ground bass part, which happened to fit nicely with the melody we were singing. During the sermon (sorry Pastor!) I started going through the violin themes in my head, seeing if any of them could also match up with the hymn tune. Some of them worked and some didn’t. I decided to write a sort of theme and variations, where the hymn tune appears in various forms. Sometimes it’s played along with one of the violin themes, and sometimes a violin theme serves as an interlude on its own. And except for one passage, the left hand is always playing some version of the basso continuo theme. I also changed the meter from 4/4 to 3/4 to make it more interesting. It culminates in a climax worthy of a king. I hope you enjoy it.

I composed this etude near the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early summer 2020 when we were all at home on lockdown. I'm not sure if the doom and gloom of the unknowns surrounding the disease, prior to vaccinations being available, influenced the dark mood of this piece or not. I also tend to like minor sounds and I am an emotionally sensitive person. This piece is for advanced solo piano and includes technical aspects such as arpeggios, scales, large leaps with chords, increasing speed from 16th note to 32nd note runs, and an elongated melody over the chord progressions and arpeggiation. I hope you enjoy this piece!

It strives to depict the hustle and bustle of a busy, working brewery and the the many hilarious, fabulous people I met during my three years in the beer-making industry.Movement 3 – Convent Cherub – This little piece began life as the opening title music of a film score I worked on while at college. The film itself, entitled My Brother Rob, was made by Alison Hilder, a student director at the Harrow School of Film. The story told of a young boy traumatised by a convent boarding school up-bringing. I have felt for many years that this little main theme has needed an alternative home, as much film music is never played again.Movement 4 – Megan – This movement comes directly from my wonderful and beautiful daughter, who was 5 years old at the time of the writing of this piece. It seeks to express her wild vibrance, eternal cheekiness, infinite energy, sparkle and the utter fearlessness of youth.Movement 5 – Edward – This music is for my gorgeous little son, who has Down’s Syndrome, and was only 3 at the time of the writing of this piece. The opening came to me moments after the doctor had confirmed Edward had Down’s, when he was only 6 hours old. The music tries to convey the fear of the unknown, huge unconditional love and moments of uncertainty alternated by washes of strength. And yet, all through the fear the resolve to forever love and stay strong always wins.Movement 6 – Indifference – The opening 4 notes are the core of this movement, and the piece is built around and from them. This music is an observation of deep, rumbling frustration at the indifference growing in our fast moving, modern society.Movement 7 – “Wee Us†– This movement expresses family triumph, the gifts of life and love, and the glory of boundless, wild, youthful energy. This tune has not yet run its course. It will be back!

I recorded it on harpsichord, but it also works great on a piano.The theme is stated plainly.The first variation adds running eighth notes in the right hand.The second variations switches the eighth notes to the left hand, and changes the harmony a bit.The third variation adds triplets in the right hand, while the left hand plays the same pattern over and over, a technique known as a ground bass. In the recording, I play it using the lute stop.The fourth variation is a sarabande, a slow dance in triple meter with frequent emphasis on the second beat of the measure.The fifth and final variation states the melody in octaves in the left hand, while the right hand goes crazy with sixteenth notes. The first eight measures of the right hand are inverted and modified to form the second eight measures.I had a lot of fun writing this. I hope you have as much fun playing it.

And it seems as though that's being eroded too easily these days.I am reminded, ironically, of the quote by Henry Ford after showcasing the now-famous Model-T, You can have this vehicle in any color you want, as long as it's black. It seems as though the appropriate quote that the media has adopted is, You may have any opinion you want, as long as it's our opinion. I don't know why black was the only option for the Model-T, but perhaps there was a good excuse for it. There is no good reason to silence anybody's voice. What I want in this country is diversity. After all, doesn't everybody agree that diversity creates a better life than monotony? But I'm not just talking about Asians, Blacks, Whites, and others living in the same country. I'm not just talking about people of different ancestries working in the same economy. The pinnacle of diversity is when people of different philosophies and ideologies work together, collaborate together, and fight together. Censorship, then, is the greatest enemy of diversity. You may think censorship is needed. You may think censorship is justified. But censorship is used as a weapon against 'dangerous' people. I will clarify. Censorship is not being used against criminals, but against individuals with controversial ideas. Free Flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny.

Published by Music Innovators Workshop (A0.984695). This is a very interesting 4 voice fugue. I like a lot - but I can't play it on this tablature - even though I can play it on traditional notation. I wonder if it's because I learned to play it first on the traditional notation, or if the complexity of the piece makes the tablature less effective than it is on less complex pieces. Actually, i'm fascinated by the way it looks on the tablature. The weaving of the melody lines is very interesting. It really is a visual work of art! 6 Pages.This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). Composed between January and March 2003, the Suite for Piano was written for a recital by pianist Qi Liu (1976-2017), at Stony Brook University, in March of 2003.The opening of the first movement evokes bells, not unlike those in Rachmaninoff’s RusÂsian Easter (the finale of his First Suite for Two Pianos). This is contrasted with a short and murky rising gesture. The middle section incorporates pianistic patterns (some reminiscent of Debussy), a yearning IbeÂrian melody, and a barely-recognizÂable snippet of Chopin used for a climax. The murky gesture eventually returns, introducing a triumphant stateÂment of the opening bells.Early on, I had decided the piece should include references to the other pieces on the reÂcital’s program: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 (op. 31, No. 3) and Brahms’s F minor SoÂnata (op. 5). As soon as I had word from Qi that she was going to play the Beethoven, I immediÂately wanted to hear it. I wasn’t familiar with the piece, and since I didn’t have a score or a reÂcording of it at home, I decided to download it in MIDI format from the internet. Unbeknownst to me, the computer’s rendition transformed the lively secÂond movement scherzo into a slow-moving hymn which reminded me of the Ode to Joy. I was quite surÂprised the next mornÂing when I went to the muÂsic library and listened to a reÂcording played by a human. Nonetheless, I was drawn to the melody, and I found the slow effect interesting, so I deÂcided to base my middle movement (the slow movement) around the theme of BeethoÂven’s scherzo, making it the hidÂden theme for a short set of variations. The end of the movement also contains less direct referÂences to the music of Brahms (very short alluÂsions to the Sonata and to the Variations on a Theme by Haydn).The last movement explores fast and light fingerwork, in a sort of toccata or capriccio, proÂviding a flashy ending to the piece. As in the first movement, the form is A-B-A. Before the return of the first section, a little dance evokes the opening of the piece. (The murky gesture from the first movement also finds its way into this last movement).Each of the three movements experiments at one point with using the sustain pedal in order to create a wash of sound. While learning Tumult in the Clouds, the dedicatee of this work found parallels to the poem, An Irish Airman Foresees His Death, by W.B. Yeats. In it, a pilot acknowledges that his participation in World War I will likely lead to his own death, yet the exhilaration of flying high above the Earth surpasses all fear. The steady left-hand ostinato reflects the pilot's willingness to unwaveringly face death, while the tumultuous chords of the right hand reflect the chaos and confusion that surrounds him. Like the pilot, you will tackle dangerous maneuvers while adrenaline courses through your veins.
