The piece has a great message, and engaging rhythmic and melodic reharmonization and a solo added. Couple page arrangement is challenging and also improvised over, but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improvise over with a band. I used it in church for a prelude, Fun Stuff.

If I neglect to close the piano lid, I’ll sometimes hear them walk across the piano keys in the middle of the night, waking up the house with dissonant clusters of notes going high to low, or low to high- this was the initial inspiration for these three pieces for piano about cats.Birds at the Window - We have hung our birdfeeder outside our window. The windowsill is a favorite spot for the kitties to relax and stretch in the sun. When the birds come to feed, the cats bristle with excitement as they chatter and swat at the window. The birds seem to know they are safe and fly around freely.Kitty’s Dream - Housecats spend most of their life sleeping or dozing. I’ve read that cats do dream. I wonder what they dream of.The Laser Pointer - The kitties seem to know that we are teasing them with the laser pointer, but they can’t fight the instinct to chase it. They feign disinterest, hoping to catch the dot off guard. In a flash they leap for the dot, skidding wildly. Of course, they never catch it. I almost feel bad for laughing. Eventually, they will become frustrated and disgusted with this game and slink away.-Michael Close.

I wonder if it's because I learned to play it first on the traditional notation, or if the complexity of the piece makes the tablature less effective than it is on less complex pieces. Actually, i'm fascinated by the way it looks on the tablature. The weaving of the melody lines is very interesting. It really is a visual work of art! 6 Pages.This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). When one has the use of only the major and minor third, major and minor triads will abound, as they do here, in just about every combination I could muster! They are used in uniform combinations, in mixed combinations, and in four-note arpeggiated sets, as well as block chords and a final mixing of inversions as well. Each section has its own characteristic rhythm and dynamic as well, for added variety. The splashes of color created by the bubbling movements in sequences separated by minor and major thirds is reminiscent of Ravel's writing in his early piano music. I wonder, was THAT how he was thinking, too! Approx running time is just under 6 mins. MBB.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125803). I first became familiar with this tune in high school choir when we performed “Sing We Now of Christmas†for a holiday concert. I did not know that it had originated as a French carol from the late 15th/early16th century and like many of my favorite carols, it is set in a minor key. I had forgotten all about it until a friend suggested arranging it for this collection. As I began working on the piece, I was torn between staying true to the feel of the original and this growing sense I had to write something more dramatic and more inspired by one of my favorite composers, Ralph Vaughn Williams. I chose a much slower tempo than the French carol and as a result it has more depth and a sense of gravitas, reflecting the mystery of the birth of Christ. At the end of the first verse, I transition to the parallel major key and the music takes on a more lighthearted and almost dance-like character as the stable is visited by shepherds and kings alike to see for themselves the sleeping child and enjoy the sense of wonder and amazement at such a scene. The music then moves back to the opening and the original key as the kings offer their gifts to the babe and prepare to return home. Even though it is in a minor key, there is an overpowering grandeur in this prelude reflecting the events to come in His short life on this earth, but even more the importance to all that his sacrifice would bring. There is a brief coda that returns to the major key with the promise of hope offered by one so small.

Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction.My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement.At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. I wrote it at the close of a chapter of my life that was wonderful in many ways, but bittersweet because I lost some people dear to me during that period of time. The piece uses a lot of parallel 0-6-11 chords (tritone with a perfect fourth stacked on top of it) in the left hand, but I think it still works quite well in conveying the feeling I had when I was writing it, which, I imagine, is something that many people can relate to. Time: 2:30 A kindly old gentleman who attended my concerts would always request BUMBLE BOOGIE. To honor his request, I decided to create my own arrangement using two Classical music favorites. As a piano entertainer, Liberace was known for taking Classical music and popularizing it. So in the style of Liberace, I took Grieg's A MINOR PIANO CONCERTO and Rimsky-Korakov's FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLE BEE, added a twist of left hand Boogie Woogie and created the BUMBLE BOOGIE CONCERTO. This arrangement is clearly notated with dynamic marks, phrasing, suggested fingerings, pedal indications, and appropriate musical terms for playing. The left hand incorporates a Boogie Woogie style ostinato while the right hand plays the main themes of the famous Grieg Concerto and Flight Of The Bumble Bee. I added my own musical transitions to create a flamboyant sound of suspenseful tremolandos and showy runs, concluding with two flashy glissandos. This is a wonderful recital and encore piece that will delight audiences...ideal for both students and professionals. Didi – Didi was a very unique and special friend for many years. She gave out great spiritual strength and insight into this very confusing world in which we all live. She was a real tower of quiet, gentle strength.Movement 2. Brew! – This movement was inspired directly by the Brewing Industry. It strives to depict the hustle and bustle of a busy, working brewery and the the many hilarious, fabulous people I met during my three years in the beer-making industry.Movement 3 – Convent Cherub – This little piece began life as the opening title music of a film score I worked on while at college. The film itself, entitled My Brother Rob, was made by Alison Hilder, a student director at the Harrow School of Film. The story told of a young boy traumatised by a convent boarding school up-bringing. I have felt for many years that this little main theme has needed an alternative home, as much film music is never played again.Movement 4 – Megan – This movement comes directly from my wonderful and beautiful daughter, who was 5 years old at the time of the writing of this piece. It seeks to express her wild vibrance, eternal cheekiness, infinite energy, sparkle and the utter fearlessness of youth.Movement 5 – Edward – This music is for my gorgeous little son, who has Down’s Syndrome, and was only 3 at the time of the writing of this piece. The opening came to me moments after the doctor had confirmed Edward had Down’s, when he was only 6 hours old. The music tries to convey the fear of the unknown, huge unconditional love and moments of uncertainty alternated by washes of strength. And yet, all through the fear the resolve to forever love and stay strong always wins.Movement 6 – Indifference – The opening 4 notes are the core of this movement, and the piece is built around and from them. This music is an observation of deep, rumbling frustration at the indifference growing in our fast moving, modern society.Movement 7 – “Wee Us†– This movement expresses family triumph, the gifts of life and love, and the glory of boundless, wild, youthful energy. This tune has not yet run its course. It will be back!
