Chopin lives in the 21st century! Although Chopin wrote 27 etudes, he used only 15 different keys. I decided to write an etude in each of the 9 keys he didn't use, imitating (more or less) his style. Here's the happy result! The first etude, in d minor, is a turbulent, churning study featuring arpeggiated figures in both hands. Many of the frequent key changes are abrupt.

The ninth and final entry in my series of Chopin-like etudes, using the keys he omitted in his own etudes. Actually, I must confess. Whereas the first 8 etudes do indeed mimic Chopin's style, for this final etude I couldn't help it: my own style, vaguely tonal but filled with crushing dissonances, dominates this piece. It is longer and more difficult than its predecessors, a juggernaut of sonorities that hurtles the poor pianist to total destruction. Not for the squeamish!

Don't let the introduction deceive you, Soaring On New Horizons is a lively and thrilling piece. After the first melodic section, listen for the arpeggios to take-off to the adventure on new horizons. A very artistic piece, Soaring On New Horizons is uniquely geared to performance in which both the music and the performer fly (or at least his fingers do). Moreover, at a jaw-dropping finish, if fingers could fly, then they would have just dived into a stunning landing; and if they could breathe, they would most certainly be out of breath.One musical work that greatly influenced and inspired many of the musical techniques was Scherzo No.2 by Chopin.On the score side of things, 15 pages long, the music is in the key of E major and is mostly in 6/8 with many exceptions. Most arpeggios are written as a performer would efficiently play them (switching between hands)-- which makes the score an easier sight-read but also gives the appearance of choppiness rather than flow. This piece is without a doubt an advanced piece mainly for one reason: speed. With a relatively high tempo, changes in meter make timing difficult, but the real challenge comes with the lightning fast arpeggios in the second section.      .

Published by Elena Fortin (A0.744622). Winter StormYears ago, I played the Bach Prelude in C Minor (BMV 999) in the RCM books. It can now be found in the Level 6 Repertoire Book of the Celebration Series by the Royal Conservatory of Music. As a creative challenge, I thought to myself: What would happen if I took the Prelude, and put it ALL in the left hand. And what would happen if some furious diva decided to play a melody over the top of this prelude? This piece is the result: a fantastic, Chopinesque remix of JS Bach. I stayed true to the Prelude wherever possible, sticking to the glorious harmonies that were explored by his genius. The melody came out stormy–and since I live in Canada, it became the perfect title. Winter Storm.The piece is challenging as a solo recital piece, but well-worth learning if you are a fan of Bach and Chopin. The left hand never stops–and has some challenging leaps and booming bass notes. The right hand is challenged with odd rhythmic subdivisions, 3’s against 2’s being one of my favourites, as well as a challenging 11 against 4 flurry of notes. Further challenges include a RH double note pattern at the end, trills, and ornaments. If you want an extra challenge, you could always play it faster–my speed in the video is conservative, only because I was trying to make sure I got the correct notes! As a pianist i was always in love with the enormous beauty and pianistic brilliance of Chopin! That influence is certainly all over this composition but it's style is a particular blend of classical and jazz approaches. The range of accent and syncopation in the left hand supports the emotional, syncopated development in the right hand. Certainly Chopinesque, but definitely contemporary!

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950925). Beginning with a dramatic introduction inspired by Bach, this prelude is much darker in tone than most Christmas carols. The first verse has the left hand crossing over to play the single note melody as the right continues the pulsating rhythm established at the start. By the second verse the hands have resumed their normal position, but now the melody is heard among a flurry of notes and must be brought out to the listener. As I was writing this, I had images of A Christmas Carol floating through my mind, particularly when the ghost of Christmas-yet-to-come visits Ebeneezer and convinces him to change his ways. This leads to the change of key from minor to major for the final section with a more Chopinesque feeling to the music as the melody returns to the left hand while the right swirls above.

Based on a traditional French melody, this arrangement of Angels We Have Heard on High runs the gamut from a George Winston-inspired opening to a closing more akin to the grand works of Handel. The driving rhythm of the left hand sets the foundation for the bell-like right hand of the intro. The pulsating energy continues as the melody rings out over the unceasing flow of eighth notes. A sense of unbridled joy permeates the music culminating in a grand finale that is fitting for the coronation of a King! I was drawn to arrange this hymn by memories of singing the wonderful Gloria section at Christmas concerts throughout my school years. There is something almost infectious about the cascade of notes, each melisma feeling like an explosion of happiness that cannot be contained. It is this quality that I tried to capture in my arrangement.
