Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125813). Another arrangement that had its genesis as a vocal chart for Five By Design. However, this piece went on to be performed in our holiday show, “A Winter’s Evening.†I have always loved the Gustav Holst melody to Christina Rossetti’s poem, subsequently it was that setting that I chose to arrange for our group. When I was selecting pieces for my second collection of Christmas Preludes, I knew this would be among them. The piece starts out quite gently, and in my mind’s ear I hear a cello and oboe establishing a mood of utter serenity and calm as the snow gently falls outside the frost-covered window. Soon the oboe is joined by a clarinet as they play a duet while the cello continues the gentle sway of eighth notes. For the pianist, there must be great control of the left hand to keep it as calm as possible while the melody floats above, just as the snow falls to the earth. As the second verse begins, the right hand now plays a triplet pattern beneath the melody. It is a gentle breeze, stirred by the wings of angels and cherubim, upon which the crystalline flakes swirl and dance in the cold night air. All the while the left hand continues its steady motion of eighth notes. Halfway through the triplet pattern moves to the left hand and the right hand takes up the eighth notes while still keeping the melody above all. The verse comes to a close with a slowing of the tempo to emphasize the importance of what the poet states in the last lines of the poem: “Yet what I can I give Him, — Give my heart.†It is all that any of us can do, and all that we are asked to do.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.950925). Beginning with a dramatic introduction inspired by Bach, this prelude is much darker in tone than most Christmas carols. The first verse has the left hand crossing over to play the single note melody as the right continues the pulsating rhythm established at the start. By the second verse the hands have resumed their normal position, but now the melody is heard among a flurry of notes and must be brought out to the listener. As I was writing this, I had images of A Christmas Carol floating through my mind, particularly when the ghost of Christmas-yet-to-come visits Ebeneezer and convinces him to change his ways. This leads to the change of key from minor to major for the final section with a more Chopinesque feeling to the music as the melody returns to the left hand while the right swirls above.

Published by Music Innovators Workshop (A0.984770). Earlier, I hesitated to publish this version that I arranged several years ago. This piece is so very well known and loved that I was concerned that a simpler version would not be well received. I recently changed my mind after playing through this version. This arrangement opens up playing this piece to many pianists who may find the original too daunting a challenge. Players and listeners will find that the arrangement sounds very much like the original. Some listeners may find it a little less full sounding - most won't be able to tell the difference.Here are the differences. (Of course its written on tablature, but that's a different issue.) First, the simpler version is not simple. It is very difficult. It just is not as difficult as the original. Second, it sounds very much like the original. It is a very full arrangement. The whole piece is there. It has not been shortened.The simplification consists mainly of removing some, but not all, of the doubling and tripling of notes. This lightens the feel of the piece just a bit. The recap of the theme at the end is simplified by changing the 4 note chords to 3 note chords, Where the right hand leaves the chords and moves very quickly down to double two bass notes and immediately back up to find the chords again, and again, the arrangement omits these few notes to leave the right hand where it is to play the chords.

A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Starting a composition ‘habit’ is the best thing I’ve done for my writing all year and is how I mean to continue for a long time. Sally Whitwell12 November 2020

This is my third volume of piano work after States of Mind and Wonders, 24 pieces of concert etudes in total. It is named as Vacillation because it collects my numerous changes of mind and thoughts within the past year. Most pieces are inspired by whims or epiphany, so they have improvisational quality and often are back and forth with uncertainty in musicality. Clinical psychiatric terms are incorporated into the title of each piece to associate the audience with human emotions and behaviors, and to provide more vivid images and colors for the audience to visualize the music. Anthony Molinaro is the 1997 winner of the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition and one of the most versatile pianists of his generation. This colorful and harmonically rich composition has been well-received by many audiences around the word. It was composed for Michael Tsalka, who enjoys playing early keyboards, and for that reason the quiet finger techniques of 18th-century keyboard music was its starting point. So unlike many etudes, the point here is not the development of difficult modern piano technique, but the parameters of harmony, rhythm and phrasing instead. In particular, the clear phrasing of contrasting and overlapping note groups is of special importance. It may sound more subtle and less flashy than a typical etude, but it can actually present a real challenge. My hope is that if one listens carefully, either as player or audience member, the various metric, harmonic and phrasing ambiguities contained in the steady gentle flow of eighth-notes will become a delightful etude for the musical mind. Composed between January and March 2003, the Suite for Piano was written for a recital by pianist Qi Liu (1976-2017), at Stony Brook University, in March of 2003.The opening of the first movement evokes bells, not unlike those in Rachmaninoff’s RusÂsian Easter (the finale of his First Suite for Two Pianos). This is contrasted with a short and murky rising gesture. The middle section incorporates pianistic patterns (some reminiscent of Debussy), a yearning IbeÂrian melody, and a barely-recognizÂable snippet of Chopin used for a climax. The murky gesture eventually returns, introducing a triumphant stateÂment of the opening bells.Early on, I had decided the piece should include references to the other pieces on the reÂcital’s program: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 (op. 31, No. 3) and Brahms’s F minor SoÂnata (op. 5). As soon as I had word from Qi that she was going to play the Beethoven, I immediÂately wanted to hear it. I wasn’t familiar with the piece, and since I didn’t have a score or a reÂcording of it at home, I decided to download it in MIDI format from the internet. Unbeknownst to me, the computer’s rendition transformed the lively secÂond movement scherzo into a slow-moving hymn which reminded me of the Ode to Joy. I was quite surÂprised the next mornÂing when I went to the muÂsic library and listened to a reÂcording played by a human. Nonetheless, I was drawn to the melody, and I found the slow effect interesting, so I deÂcided to base my middle movement (the slow movement) around the theme of BeethoÂven’s scherzo, making it the hidÂden theme for a short set of variations. The end of the movement also contains less direct referÂences to the music of Brahms (very short alluÂsions to the Sonata and to the Variations on a Theme by Haydn).The last movement explores fast and light fingerwork, in a sort of toccata or capriccio, proÂviding a flashy ending to the piece. As in the first movement, the form is A-B-A. Before the return of the first section, a little dance evokes the opening of the piece. (The murky gesture from the first movement also finds its way into this last movement).Each of the three movements experiments at one point with using the sustain pedal in order to create a wash of sound.
