The text asks Willie and Robin, two figures common in French culture, to praise God and the birth of Jesus Christ with flute and drum. Near the end I have a canon of the tune, with the bass in augmentation. Hooray!

An arrangement of a concert piece by Calixa Lavallee, the French Canadian who also wrote Canada's national anthem, O Canada. You may be familiar with mirror writing for the piano (see Vincent Persichetti's Mirror Etudes). So I took the busy right hand part of Calixa's piece and made a mirror for the left hand; original left hand figures went to the right. However, the accompaniment figures are not mirrored, but newly composed (the exact mirror was too dull). A kind of atonality is the delightful result.

The player is free to arpeggiate any wide spans. As always, I greatly enjoyed changing the harmonies and making full, rich textures, while retaining the lullaby-like nature of the tune.

The short introduction mimics a player improvising on a harp-like instrument; this passage returns to close the piece. There are five verses in unrelated minor keys; after verse three there is a rather dissonant interlude which temporarily upsets the prevailing calm. One of the charms of this Japanese tune is its unusual phrase structure contained in 14 bars.

I have composed numerous waltzes, as I have an affinity for them, especially if they have unique interest. The opening of this waltz is based on a snippet of material I heard in a beginning ballet class many years ago. The idea repeated many times, to the point of annoyance. I thought, now that A# in bar 2, bulling its way into E minor, is trouble waiting to happen. And indeed, trouble comes. This section appears several times, in different minor keys, alternating with contrasting sections, like a rondo. Every time the A# (or its transposed equivalent) is played, various harmonic disasters occur, growing more intense as the piece progresses. As for the title, I like the word 'rhinoceros.' I played the piece for some of them, and they liked it well enough.

In 2006 I began a series of musical fragments for my second-year theory students, using either their first or last name in a distorted or humorous manner as a title, which then led (usually) to a specific musical idea or style. The fragments appear consecutively as one single piece, but each fragment is a stand-alone piece (although very short). The present work is the first installment, that is, the one I composed in 2006.

The tune is unusual in having a flat seventh degree in several phrases, implying the mixolydian mode (actually, natural minor in the third phrase). This lends a special character to the music. In the second verse, and again in the last, I fashioned a florid LH accompaniment for the tune. In keeping with the flat seven, I use it again in the last measure (ending on a D-flat 9). Sorry, no resolution.

The contemporary nature of these pieces comes partly from the individual titles. How many times have we heard on the phone, 'This conversation will be recorded for quality control'? So the first rag is 'This Piece May Be Recorded for Quality Control.' Why? Because the main sections are in seven sharps. Best of luck to you. The second rag refers to the modern computer age: 'Press Any Key to Continue,' and the beginning is indeed a seemingly random series of notes, which are then gathered together for a chord. This chord then forms basic material for the rest of the piece. The final rag borrows from merchants who may, for instance, have circulated an ad with a misprint. Correcting the misprint, the merchant then invariably offers this: 'We Apologize for Any Inconvenience.' So how inconvenient is the rag I have written? Haha: play through it and you will discover quite a few inconveniences. But I apologize for them in advance.

Published by Samuel Wellman (A0.882111). This is a parody of Mozart's Sonata K. 545, first movement. Since he termed it 'Sonata facile,' I took 'facile' and made an English equivalent. What greater fun is there than taking an over-played work and turning it into laughs and giggles? My version starts with a bitonal setting, but quickly becomes something more complicated. The left hand gets involved; no more of this 'all-the- work-is-in-the-right-hand' stuff. Jazz chords intrude; Tchaikovsky makes an appearance (after all, he adored Mozart). It's a lark, a humorous lampoon. Humor in music is alive and well!

This one is based on the so-called 'Cat Fugue,' the Scarlatti Sonata K.30. It was logical to turn the subject into a 12-tone row; however, this is not strictly a 12-tone work. I wrote much of it on a glorious Father's Day morning in Colorado, 2010, eating the syrupiest, biggest sticky bun ever made. This arrangement is much more difficult than the other nine; beginners, stay away! (And advanced players are also warned.).
