Whiskers now begins on his curious adventure into the unknown. He begins carefully stepping through the forest with caution into unfamiliar territory, his ear pricked to listen out for any sounds that might be someone or something else. As he makes his way through the forest looking for something to explore, the wind begins to pick up. The trees move in the wind and the leaves rustle and fly around Whiskers which causes him to panic.As the piece moves to a more active section with the use of semiquavers, Whiskers begins to run further into the forest, losing his sense of direction from the confusion caused by the wind and all the leaves about. Whiskers frantically tries to find his way back home but the wind grows stronger blowing more leaves around which makes it even harder to see where he’s going.Eventually the leaves settle back on the ground as the wind dies down and comes to a rest. Whiskers has stumbled across something he has never seen before in this forest, a house. It looks abandoned and like someone used to live there many decades ago. He stops in his tracks to take a good long look at the mysterious looking house that towers before him.

A minimalist solo piano work, inspired by Vicky Chow's 2016 performance on Roulette Intermedium (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpjbf6lc2FY&ab_channel=VickyChow). The title translates to Inconsequences.A note on the piece:Could something be inconsequential? Is it possible, objectively, to materialize something truly insignificant? Will it always depend on different perspectives? In this work, I did not attempt to answer these questions but rather to present two ways of looking at this curious enigma that reach similar conclusions: the repetition of something weak and possibly uninteresting results in a greater appreciation for it, gradually adding emotional value that was initially simple and raw. In other words, inconsequence is ephemeral, quickly shedding its prefix.

I rarely start by writing a composition with the name in mind but it’s something that I try to do more often and it’s something that I for this piece. When I came up with the name ‘Bloom’ I really wanted to write a piece or at least an opening section that sounded like that word, where the music blooms out like a flower. The first and last section are the same and are just a chordal pattern that rises up from the left hand into the right hand. This kind of writing is simple but quite effective as it slowly evolves over time as the chords change and allows for reflective mood.The middle section does go in a bit of a different direction but I still wanted to infuse elements from the first section into this section as well as use the gesture of ‘Bloom’ in some way. This sections still evolves in it’s own way but I would say I wrote it in a more through-composed style with different little themes that come and go. I hope you are able to image the music ‘Bloom’ when you listen to it.

He is not only the most significant and popular composer ever to come out of Latvia; he always speaks to his listeners with a fervent intensity that seems to point to something higher. This higher aspect is without a doubt something that stands above the world of humanity but is also present within each person: divine nature. “I am deeply rooted in nature, in the nature of the North. It influences all of my music. The nature we know is also quite various; we have four very distinct seasons. The winter is very long, the summer very short and therefore all the more beautiful and longed for. The seasons in between are quite dramatic.†In 2009, as a kind of “encoreâ€, Vasks wrote Vasaras vakara mÅ«zika –Music for a Summer Evening based on old sketches and therefore rather strongly anchored in tradition. Vasks says: “It describesthe quiet end of a summer day. The sun sets. Slowness. Memories of previous experiences rise. With the memories’ appearance comes an increase in intensity. Towards the end, a kind of folksong is heard: ‘We have survived the time of tyranny and have kept our identity’. Cornus - A Fantasy Ballade for Piano, composed by Aris Antoniades.Cornus is the name of the forest that surrounds the Army Unit I was stationed at, during the first year of my military service back in my homeland, Cyprus. The magical sounds of nature and the myths surrounding this forest were what kept me company during many cold, endless nights of sentry guard duty. On such nights, I would often let my imagination soar, making up stories and music. It was during one of those moments of spontaneous inspiration that I came up with the opening motif for this piece.The piece tries to musically depict the different feelings a questing knight experiences when he sets off into the depths of the forest and back. Just like all typical chivalric romances, the hero discovers something remarkable while he travels - something that has the power to change him forever. Although by the end of the story the hero returns back to where he started, he is now a different person since the adventure forced him to undergo a catharsis.

He then taught piano there himself from 1885 until 1918, whilst also serving as conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre until 1911.This theatre saw the premieres of the operas composed by his teacher and mentor Rimsky-Korsakov, and he was also the conductor at the Russian premiere of Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde.In 1908, he conducted the Paris premiere of Modest Mussorgsky's opera Boris Godunov.From 1918 to 1922, he was the director of the Music-drama school of Mykola Lysenko in Kiev, where, amongst others, Vladimir Horowitz was a pupil in his masterclasses. He returned to the Moscow Conservatory in 1922, teaching there until his death. Other famous pupils of his include Simon Barere, Maria Yudina and Maria Grinberg. He died in Moscow.As a pianist, he played many of the compositions of his Russian contemporaries. His compositions, which showed the influence of Frédéric Chopin and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, include a symphony, pieces for solo piano, an Allegro de Concert for piano and orchestra, and lieder. His virtuoso pieces for piano in particular are enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years.He was the uncle of Heinrich Neuhaus and first cousin, once removed of Karol Szymanowski (Felix and Karol's father, Stanislaw Szymanowski, were cousins).(Wikipedia).
