Vignettes is a set of 5 short (2 or 3-page) late-intermediate piano pieces that introduce unique aspects of Maurice Ravel's piano writing that students tend to find challenging. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes1. Réminiscences d’EspagneThis work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2. Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3. Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4. Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. À la manière d'une PavaneÀ la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. It combines Baroque-reminiscent polyphony with the clarity and delicacy of articulation required more widely in the Ravel repertoire.

First published in 1998, the Rhapsody is based on 3 Israeli songs: a folk song, EL YIVNE HAGALIL; a Ladino song of the Sephardic Jewish tradition, HITRAGUT; and Israel's national anthem, HATIKVA. The composer had performed the piece in concerts all over the world. He also recorded the Rhapsody onto a CD and a DVD and it can be heard and watched on YouTube - http://youtu.be/w3j3bGOyy6M . Rami Bar-Niv is one of Israel's most acclaimed and sought after pianists. He travels extensively and has become an international citizen, concertizing all over the world. Born in Tel-Aviv in December 1945, Bar-Niv graduated with honors from the Rubin Academy of Music, and was the recipient of various prizes and scholarships. After graduating from the Mannes College of Music in New York, where he studied with the renowned Mme. Nadia Reisenberg, he won numerous competitions, and embarked on a successful concert career. He is heard regularly in North, Central, and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel, where he received the Best Performer Award from the Israeli government. Rami Bar-Niv performs as a soloist with orchestras, as a recitalist, and as a chamber musician. He appears in live concerts, on radio, and on television, and is always received with great enthusiasm. Often sent abroad by the Foreign Ministry to represent Israel in concerts, he has become an ambassador of goodwill for Israel. Bar-Niv made history by being the first, and so far the only, Israeli artist to perform in Egypt following the Begin/Sadat Peace Treaty. His recordings for CBS and other labels in Israel and abroad have met with praise and popularity. His compositions are published, recorded, and performed all over the world. He has often been at the top of the charts on various Internet music sites such as MP3.com, YouTube, and many others. Along with his concerts, he has been teaching all over the world, giving master classes, lectures, workshops, and private lessons. Since 2006 he has been offering a week-long piano camp for adults twice a year in the United States. In 2012 he published his book The Art of Piano Fingering - Traditional, Advanced, and Innovative.

The harmony is definitely of the 20th Century with flexible rhythm and a unmistakenly with a Ravel sound albeit a simple piece comparatively.It will serve as a good introductory lesson to Ravel's style.Bonus piece is by yours truly.

From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano compositions in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). It means The Sunken Garden, and I'll explain why below.It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), large rolled chords, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music. All of these can be disorienting to students encountering Ravel's music for the first time, so students will benefit from Ravel-preparatory repertoire, like this piece, that introduces these techniques.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the student piano literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's compositions.On a more personal level, this piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of repertoire before moving away last year. The Jordan Hall greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.Because the Wells Quad dorms are right next door, I hear this piece as a recollection of a social dance night that the dorms probably held frequently back when the Sunken Garden existed. Wells Quad served as a classroom/academic office complex for years after Jordan Hall was built in the 50s, but they are now back-converting the buildings into dorms again. (As of this writing, two of the buildings now serve as dorms, while the other two are still academic buildings. While I was pursuing my doctoral minor in composition, the composition professors' studios were almost all in Wells Quad's Sycamore Hall. They upgraded to the East Studio Building as soon as they could, though!).

This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6. Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist.For more information on Armenian music, refer to : Kazarian, Hachig. The world premiere was performed by Michael Kieran Harvey. He is considered by many as being one of Australia’s greatest living concert pianists. Michael specializes in performing world premieres of compositions by Australian composers. He is also a prolific composer of avant-garde music. ABSTRACT FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTIONS Audacious Binary Forms for piano is in a fractured binary form. Two types of structures exist; lettered structures, which are experimental structures, and explore the sonorities of the piano, and numbered structures, which are more traditional structures. A structure may be a single page or more than one page. Each page in a structure is to be played sequentially. For example, with structure C, consisting of three pages, C1, C2, C3, each page is played sequentially in numerical order, C1, C2, C3. EXPERIMENTAL STRUCTURESThe structures A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Percussion, CADENZA, and CODA are experimental. TRADITIONAL STRUCTURESThe structures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, are traditional. PREPARING THE SCORE FOR PERFORMANCE There are four different options for a performance. MINIMALIST OPTIONThe 13 cards cut from the CUTOUT page are shuffled. Card 4 Rag (1,2) is removed. The 12 cards are placed face down. One card is revealed representing the structure that is to be performed. A member of the audience can be invited to shuffle the cards. STOCHASTIC OPTION An audience member or members can be invited to shuffle all the pages of the score. The resultant random sequence of pages becomes the whole score for the performance. PERFORMER’S OPTIONThe performer prepares the structures according to his musical tastes. All of the experimental structures should be performed. The performer is free to play none, some, or all of the traditional structures. Please note that each structure remains an independent structure and is played sequentially. For example, structure C, consisting of three pages would be played C1, C2, C3 in that order. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelléas et Mélisande in 1893–1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1912–13). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphée-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 1902–03); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 1908–17); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 1912–13; or Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien and La Boîte à joujoux by his ‘angel of corrections’ [‘l’ange des Corrections’] André Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively).<br> <br> For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussy’s ‘compulsive achievement’ could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure’s 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.<br> <br> It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to ‘write a ballet for him that he would sign’ on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with André Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In his book Impressionism, author Pierre Courthion writes how Ravel's Mother Goose Suite seems like a musical commentary to Monet's Waterlilies. Len has titled his transcription - Reflections - containing the main movements from Mother Goose (Ma Mère l’Oye), with beautifully crafted segue's that create uninterrupted flow from movement to movement. Ravel originally wrote this ballet as a charming, delicate and imaginative suite of fairytale pieces. This transcription is a continuous work featuring - (i) the Prelude, (ii) Pavane de la Belle au Bois dormant (Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty), (iii) Les entretiens de la Belle et de la Bête (Conversation of Beauty and the Beast), (iv) Petit Poucet (Little Tom Thumb), and Le jardin féerique (The Fairy Garden). It is suitable for the more advanced (ABRSM grade 6/7) pianist, but will be appreciated by all lovers of Ravel, and Ma Mère l’Oye in particular. The music contains some larger chords so not entirely suitable for small hands. This is an extended work - 8 pages of music.

Finally, I have re-voiced a few areas where hands collide in the original to make it easier to negotiate.It is advanced Intermediate is level although a competent Intermediate pianist may be ok with it. Best to look at the youtube to judge which has the whole score. It is 5 pages and roughly 3 mins 15 in length.It really is a wonderful piece- especially used for concert's weddings, recitals, encore, incidental, recitals etc.

This is a beautiful piece that all pianists should learn, as it is very doable, considering the quality of the music, which is more musically rather than technically challenging. The left hand accompaniment seems to consist of two triple time in a bar while the time signature is actually triple (per bar), creating an interesting aural experience when the melody is played against the meter. The simple but subtle melodic line is harmonised with slight dissonances unique to Ravel. The tension caused by the unusual rhythm and the dissonances makes it a beautiful and exotic piece. .
