Duration 13 minutes; 30 secondsBy ROBERT VAN HORNE Composing THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for Piano & Orchestra was a journey of inspiration, passion, and deep personal connection for me. Having traveled to China, I was most impressed with seeing the Great Wall. Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction.My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement.At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. Inspired and motivated by several cherished Chinese excursions to the Great Wall during my cruise ship engagement, I began the monumental task of scoring music for piano and orchestra several years later. An excerpt from 2008 Music Teacher of California Magazine review states “…The Great Wall Concerto is pleasant to listen to and has a retro 1940’s movie soundtrack mood about it - Rachmaninoff style chords against melodies in the strings...Listening to this piece, I imagined a film starring Joan Fontaine and Claude Rains as star crossed lovers fleeing their respective spouses on a visit to China.â€After many years of offering the original Conductor’s Piano & Orchestra Score of the concerto with instrumental parts (currently available at Sheet Music Plus and Sheet Music Direct), the Duo Piano Score of THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands is now also available at those two websites.Both Piano I and Piano II parts are clearly notated with phrasing, dynamics, accents, suggested fingerings and musical word descriptions for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands performances. THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO for 2 Pianos, 4 Hands makes a wonderful and memorable performance piece for two piano recitals as well as a score for practicing with an orchestra, since Piano I is the original piano part.A 2 Pianos, 4 Hands recording or video of THE GREAT WALL CONCERTO is not available at this time, however, a 2006 recorded version with Piano & Orchestra is available for demo purposes only. Published by Juan Carlos Guerra Gonzalez (A0.1101275). 2 pianos Study Score of Tapayawi The following description is from the full score: Tapayawi - Concerto for Piano and Strings Orchestra in 3 movements.Estimated performance time: 19'45 Tapayawi†comes from Nahuatl and means “rain constantly.†Each one of the movements portrays a scene with rain in different environments. The work has 3 short movements and is dedicated to Dr. Esteban Barquero, a conductor and dear friend from Costa Rica. The first movement “Bajo la lluvia†(Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain.“Rocio†(Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives.The third movement “Tempestad†(Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc†As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.†The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. This movement is very demanding for the performers, especially for the soloist. Audacious Binary Forms for pianist playing one or two pianos, won Australia’s most prestigious piano composition competition the Jean Bogan Prize for Piano Composition 2016. The world premiere was performed by Michael Kieran Harvey. He is considered by many as being one of Australia’s greatest living concert pianists. Michael specializes in performing world premieres of compositions by Australian composers. He is also a prolific composer of avant-garde music. ABSTRACT FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTIONS Audacious Binary Forms for piano is in a fractured binary form. Two types of structures exist; lettered structures, which are experimental structures, and explore the sonorities of the piano, and numbered structures, which are more traditional structures. A structure may be a single page or more than one page. Each page in a structure is to be played sequentially. For example, with structure C, consisting of three pages, C1, C2, C3, each page is played sequentially in numerical order, C1, C2, C3. EXPERIMENTAL STRUCTURESThe structures A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Percussion, CADENZA, and CODA are experimental. TRADITIONAL STRUCTURESThe structures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, are traditional. PREPARING THE SCORE FOR PERFORMANCE There are four different options for a performance. MINIMALIST OPTIONThe 13 cards cut from the CUTOUT page are shuffled. Card 4 Rag (1,2) is removed. The 12 cards are placed face down. One card is revealed representing the structure that is to be performed. A member of the audience can be invited to shuffle the cards. STOCHASTIC OPTION An audience member or members can be invited to shuffle all the pages of the score. The resultant random sequence of pages becomes the whole score for the performance. PERFORMER’S OPTIONThe performer prepares the structures according to his musical tastes. All of the experimental structures should be performed. The performer is free to play none, some, or all of the traditional structures. Please note that each structure remains an independent structure and is played sequentially. For example, structure C, consisting of three pages would be played C1, C2, C3 in that order. PERFORMER/COMPOSER OPTIONMonths before the concert the performer can contact me at paulcopeland1@bigpond.com, to discuss the performance, and to work out an ideal performance structure for the work, taking into consideration the venue, expected size of audience, size of auditorium, music program, and if two pianos will be available. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING SHEET MUSIC SIZE Please note that the score should be printed on separate pages (the notated pages), not back to back. Ideally the score should be printed on A3 pages in colour. However the score can still be printed in grayscale. The sheet music file is approximately 15Mb because the score is in full color. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Paul Copeland is an award-winning multi-genre composer, graphic artist, programmer, teacher, and author, based in his home city of Melbourne. His compositional styles range from neo-classical, jazz, ragtime, and musical theatre to electronic, avant-garde, post-avant-garde, and experimental music. Born in 1947, Copeland grew up an only child in a musical household. His mother was a talented singer, his father an accomplished amateur pianist, composer of popular music, and internationally renowned travelling telepathist known as Argus The Boy Prophet. Copeland's musical studies commenced at the age of 16 when he began studying piano, and a year later, he enrolled at the Melba Conserv.

Descensus ad Infero is a two piano ensemble piece composed by Tito Abeleda (1964 - ). Digital download is score plus parts = 31 pages. Descensus ad Infero is a thriller two piano duet. As such this is a powerful passionate piece with much boldness, dissonance, and angst. There is a driving pulse that is vehement and at times unpleasant and even frenetic because one's descent into the abyss has been adjudged for a life lived accordingly. Piano 1 and Piano 2 trade off on motifs and dynamic changes. Note the melodic motifs that warrant greater emphasis throughout the piece. This piece is rather accessible for the advanced intermediate student. This score would also work well as music for thriller, horror, and/or suspense films. This movement is the second of five dance portraits commemorating the Southern Academy of Ballet Arts (S.A.B.A.) and its performing company, Pas de Vie, of Tallahassee, Florida.
