Here is the narrative below.                                     The True Stars to FollowI observed that stars from above may glow just as brilliantly in the sea as the ones above. So how can we fathom which stars show its true radiance?The only stars that have reliable radiance are the ones in the sky. All other stars are illusions meant to mimic the ones above. But we cannot let them deceive us. If you follow the stars in the sea, you will sink like the rocks. Down you will go into the abyss chasing an illusion you believed were the real stars. If you dig deeper until you are covered in mud, your eyes will become used to the abyss until you forget what you were even chasing. And if you look up at the stars above, you would quickly shy away from them as it causes affliction in your eyes. A single light bursts across the night sky like the streak of an artist's pen. A second joins, darting across an abyss of black in a wink of pearly light. Dozens of shooting stars join the first, the sky alight with dancing beams. They fall like tears across a celestial page, jumping, dancing, and disappearing across the horizon. Soon though, the meteor shower must end, the last spark blazing across the night sky in a solitary pin prick of brilliant light. The sky is dark again, not a single sign that shooting stars had ever brightened its marbled dome.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1248123). There is a storm brewing on the horizon and the ship is starting to be tossed about by waves which can be heard rolling in the left hand. The captain calls for the sails to be furled lest they be torn to shreds by the gale force winds. They have endured many storms before, but this is unlike any The Tempest has encountered. The men try to lift their spirits with tales of what has come before and the acts of heroism which have helped them to survive. Their bravado is cut short as the storm intensifies. Lightning flashes across the sky and they realize now that there may be no coming back from this voyage. The swells grow ever larger and cracks can be heard throughout the ship as support beams and masts give way under the tremendous stress. This late intermediate suite of three songs for piano was created out of my fascination with the allegory of the Fool's journey found in different Tarot decks. In some the Fool has a Flowering Staff, which provides the impetus for the first piece, The Flowering Staff. In others the Fool has a leaping, laughing dog. The little dog was my guide for the second piece, The Laughing Dog. And sometimes the Fool is found stepping off the side of a cliff, inspiring the third piece, Beyond the Abyss. Akëda is based on the prayer El Maleh Rakhamim which is one of two main Jewish liturgies commemorating the deceased (the other one is the Kaddish.) The music is written in a free, single movement, improvisatory-like form. The traditional eastern-European melody of El Maleh is the main text, which pulls liked a thread throughout the movement. The different musical gestures surrounding and illustrating it, function as commentaries (Midrashim.) Simulating the journey of a prayer, from the abyss upward to the highest height, so does the music in this movement cruise from the lowest range all the way up to the top octaves of the instrument. The Hebrew word Akëda means binding or sacrificial offering as the binding of the sacrifice in the story of Abraham and Isaac: ..., and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. (Genesis, 22,9.) The prayer of El Maleh Rakhamim appears in several different versions. The version used for Akëda is the one specifically chanted during Yom Hashoah in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

It is a solo piano piece in a classical style with a dark, somber feel, and a dynamic, changing meter. Not exactly a true rhapsody, more of a theme with variations; I was in high school when I composed it and I thought the title sounded cool. I've polished it up since then and I think it's a great solo piece and an enjoyable listen. I recommend playing using the pedal and crescendoing and decrescendoing with the melody as it goes up and down. The notes are the fundamental structure of the song, but I'd expect you to add dynamics and embellishments as feels best to you as a performer. The difficulty might be intermediate to advanced. There's lots of arpeggios which makes it not too hard to follow, but some of the fingering while jumping up and down with chords and the varying meter could make it difficult. Enjoy.
