This is my first time I have written a piece that doesnot have a standard structure. It is also the first time that I have expressed my feelings about Australia through music, inspired by Lawson’s moving poem. The reason why I name my piece ‘Consciousness2.0’ is because it depicts a picture of how people rise and fall in life. An example of this is what happened during the Australian bushfires, which was a time when people were very aware of what was happening. Consciousness means to be aware and responsive to the surroundings, and it can also mean a person’s perspective of events. My piece begins with a soft introduction, which describes the life of Australia and its unique environment. From the bustling cities to the open country, there is always some life around Australia. Sometimes there is also some wild weather, which is represented in the arpeggiated left hand (bars 10-14). The story then shifts its focus to the animals, through short 2-part phrase in bars 23-26. The animals areenjoying their time in nature. The phrase is in Aeolian mode, so there is a bit of mystery instead of having an obvious key. Then, the parallel fifths depict the openness and vastness of the land. The transition is shown in bars 32-34 by a smooth 4-part phrase going downwards. The next fast section (bars 35-47) describes the rise of panic, just like a howling heat of the bushfire. The chromatic 7th chords (bars 36,38) make a sense of tension, and after 3 times, the chromaticism makes its way to a recent memory of the rushing semiquavers (bars 43-44) After the bushfires came closer, animals panicked as they rushed and left their precious homes. It was devastating to see how many people were affected, with houses destroyed, people and animals burning into the ashes (bars 48-54). Then there is another new section (bars 55-68) which describes the uncertainty, for example, the right-handquavers describe a flashback of nature planning itself to create a bushfire, or the times when people were planning a solution to this incident. The uncertainty was unfolded when the fast right hand semiquavers come back, (bars 69-82) creating a whoosh of destruction disappointment and adjustment. The last part is the ending of story (bars 84 to end). Though the fire has made a lot of destruction, with Aussie spirit, there is always hope that everyone can rebuild a new and better community in the future

A piece in C minor for fortepiano, entirely based on five sketches by Beethoven: Biam. 349b (1802-1803), Biam. 280 (c. 1800), Biam. 349a (1802-1803), Biam. 467 (1808), and Biam. 472 (1808). Its interest lies in the combination and adjustment of the respective fragments, to result in a fluent piece in late Classical style. The sketches were expanded to exploit a bit their passing ideas (the double bars in the score indicate the end of the original material). A mysterious introduction in C minor (Largo, Biam. 349b) is continued by modulations reminding of the Introduzione to the Finale of Beethoven’s Op. 53 and linking it to the vivacious central section, with triplets (first, Allegro assai, in B major as a possible reading of Biam. 280, which was originally written down without a key signature). This is continued by a section in A major (Biam. 349a) and then in D minor, in triple time (Biam. 467). To adapt to the new key, I made adjustments to the melody and harmony, aiming to keep the music as close as possible to its original version. My goal in making this arrangement was driven by curiosity to know how this song would sound in its homonymous key (E major). To me, this version in E major seems to have a lighter and calmer atmosphere, while still maintaining some of the nostalgic, melancholic, and introspective atmosphere of the original version.

Looking Back by Yik Khai.This is my first ever composition for piano. Hope you find it enjoyable to listen and play. :)The piece depicts someone, who has gone through so much in life - be it happiness, sorrow, triumph or grief, stopping for a moment and looking back. Turning around and taking a good long look of the past and letting all sorts of memories gush into his mind, bringing back all those long forgotten nostalgia. The intro of the piece, is when he sits down, his mind slowly steps out from the present reality and starts to wander off in search of the past. Throughout the piece, he encounters fond memories which will always be a joy to think of, and also bad memories, which he is powerless to amend, and so lets them pass on like a flowing river. At the end, he steps back slowly into the present, after an amazing short trip through the life he has lived. The piece is generally played with pedal throughout with rubato at a relaxed tone.
