Charles L. Johnson (1875 -1937) was born in Kansas City, Kansas and stayed in the Kansas Cityarea his entire life. Dill Pickles Rag was so-named when Johnson wasworking at Carl Hoffman Music Company. Apparently, while composingthe piece, the company's bookkeeper asked Johnson what the piece wascalled; the bookkeeper was carrying a carton of pickles for hisdinner, which prompted to Johnson to say "I'll call it DillPickles Rag.
