Are We There Yet Blues is an Advanced Intermediate Blues piano solo, 1 minute and 45 seconds long, in the key of C; with 16th notes, and 16th note triplets nested in 8th note triplets. Don’t be intimidated by all the notes, they fit nicely within hand positions. I have found although there is a lot of EASY material for boogie learners, and at the other end of the spectrum, complicated transcriptions, I needed to write intermediate pieces for my students to fill the material gap. The Pitcairn Islands are a remote British colony in the South Pacific, famous for being the site where the mutineers from the HMS Bounty landed. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island†it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream†(sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. It is not known for how long this was considered as their anthem, however. Also, in 1856, several Pitcairners resettled on Norfolk Island as Pitcairn had become too small. The local anthem now in use on Norfolk Island, Come Ye Blessed, is also referred to as the “Pitcairn Anthemâ€, and more than likely was brought to the island by the Pitcairn settlers, suggesting that this anthem was in use on Pitcairn at that time, and is also heard on Pitcairn currently.Currently, the song “We From Pitcairn Island†(to the tune of the hymn “The Royal Telephoneâ€) is used as an unofficial anthem at gatherings and the like. The lyrics were written by Pitcairner Melva Evans with assistance from the local Seventh Day Adventist Pastor L. A. J. Webster in 1962 to be performed by the school children on board a visiting cruise ship, but the song became identified by residents as their unofficial anthem. Other songs, such as “The Goodbye Song†(written by Pitcairner Amelia Young), and the hymn “In The Sweet By and By†are considered unofficial “Pitcairn songs†at gatherings as well. (“Goodbye songsâ€, sung to ships as they leave the country, are a tradition in many Polynesian islands, and are part of the patriotic music of those countries.).

There are many more unfinished than completed compositions of Beethoven that have been preserved. ln these fragments one sees ideas for individual works. A large number of sketchbooks and sketches from the composer were preserved and are housed in libraries and private collections all over the globe. Some sketches are no more than brief experiments or short elaborated ideas, but there are also fragments preserved that nearly give us a complete picture of a composition. In the so-called Kafka sketchbook, which was published in 1970 in London, approximately 500 fragments of manuscripts were bundled that stem from 1786 - 1799. The Fantasia Sonata in D (deest 45) for piano forte in three parts, was hidden in the archives since 1792. This sonata of the young Beethoven, with striking similarities to the Moonlight sonata and the Pastorale has never been performed on stage. Young pianotalent Martin Oei played it for the first time in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, October 21st, 2012. The large, over 1100 bars comprising torso now known as Fantasia Sonata in D from 1792, cannot be called a sketch anymore, although Beethoven has not completed the work and used many ideas in other, later works. The reconstruction of the sketches was done by the Dutch Beethoven musicologist and composer Cees Nieuwenhuizen. The piece was probably written in Bonn, three years before he started to write his first official piano sonata of a series of 32 sonatas. In November 1792 Beethoven went from Bonn to Vienna to study with the famous composer Joseph Haydn (1732–1809). Beethoven rapidly proceeded to make his mark as a brilliant keyboard performer and as a gifted young composer with a number of works to his credit. In 1795 his first mature published works appeared, and his career was officially launched. Striking harmonies The re-using of previously drafted material is quite common in Beethoven's works. Apparently the material wasn't yet ripe enough at the time of its origination, or perhaps Beethoven changed his mind with regards to the new composition. This could very well be so regarding the torso from Kafka’s sketchbook that we now call the Piano Fantasia sonata in D. This piece contains 1100 bars of music, not taking into account the alternative bars. The piece is composed by Beethoven in 1792 - 1793 and was set up as a tripartite sonata in D with remarkable abnormalities in terms of form and content. There are striking harmonies that cannot be found in other works composed in that same period. It’s possible that the composer didn’t have the courage to publish it or that indeed the time was not yet ripe for it. Finally the composer let the draft go and never came back to it. Or did he? Thematic similarities We find phrases in several later works that share similarities with ideas and themes from Fantasia sonata in D. The first part of Fantasia sonata has the same theme as the trio of the third movement of Symphony no. 7 (in A Major Opus 92). Even the key and also the rhythm in 3/4 time are the same. This cannot be a coincidence. Similar mood and thematic parallels can be found in the Pastorale, the Sonata for piano no. 15 (Opus 28): it is striking that this piece is also composed in D and in 3/4 time. We find similar dramatic expression in the Sonata for piano no. I 7 in d minor Opus 31 no. 2. The second movement of the Fantasia sonata nearly has the same theme as the second movement of the Sonata for piano no. 23 in minor (the Appassionato Opus 57). Martin Oei, Daiel Wayenberg, Cees Nieuwenhuizen at The World Premiere in The Concertgebouw Beethoven begins the third movement of the Fantasia sonata with the main theme of the first movement, but now in e minor. lts appearance in minor is an entirely new idea. Nevertheless Beethoven doesn't elaborate the idea any further because it disappears after 29 bars. Now a new agitated theme starts in d minor, which was announced in the first movement, but now reappears in its complete.

FINDING MY VOICE is a short intermediate piano work that is simple and symbolic. Inspired by my 4 year old daughter Gracie, the piece represents the music we all have inside us and that we try to connect with early in life. 2 years prior to the start of the piece, I laughed in amusement as my daughter screamed at the top of her enthusiastic lungs to the music of Disney's The Little Mermaid. On the day I began this piece, she sang along to yet another Disney work, Coco, only now with her eyes closed and doing her best at her young age to match pitch and timbre. Of course all of this unaware to her, yet through each phase she enjoys the music and somehow understands and has the will to discover a way to match the art she loves so much. FINDING MY VOICE is simple and symbolic in two special ways. First, the entire song is built with a C, representing that center that we all are trying to find and match in our own way. But for 1/8th of a measure, there is continuously a C sounded throughout the piece. Secondly, the heard melody starts with experimentation, grows, developers, and then reoccurs with strength and confidence.

Music NotesThis is a piece I wrote to shape some concepts for my first/second year pianostudent daughter. I had the idea while listening to her practice by brute force –meaning the keys are repeated hit continuously at same tempo, same strength – almost as a pounding exercise. I thought nuance was not getting into her playing yet (as with most beginning students).  I wanted her to be aware of the musicality innate in a piece of music.Therefore, I loaded this piece up with all kinds of tempo changes, dynamics, etc. A little overkill, but printed music does suggest these things although it might not be written in.Concepts I was going for: Form: In this case a Rondo. Using classic ABACA. Key Relationships: C Major / A Minor. Sections B and C are in A minor, although written in key of C with the addition of sharps (leading tone G ♯). Hand Independence: Scales in one hand punctuated in the other. Scales: Scales found in both hands and the value of scales fingering in a real piece. Phrasing: How different notes are placed together to make a complete thought. Dynamics: Lots of changes written in there and how it relates to phrasing helping make the ‘complete thought.’ Articulation: Staccato vs Legato, voices opposing each other; again helping with the ‘complete thought.’ Tempo: That such a thing as flexible tempo helps with phrasing and completing that ‘complete thought’ we talked about. Pounding beat vs a larger beat: as interpretation such as dance (emphasizing the first beat instead of pounding by each beat. Notice by the tempo markings that a larger beat is called for by the markings (one beat per measure embracing the dance aspect.) Her former teacher is very talented, holds his Doctor's degree in Piano Performance and was absolutely terrific with her. That being said, Kara soon found out there were boys, and from that moment on the instructor never had a chance. She’s 38 now, loves to play this piece and still -- pounds it out. ☺.

A three-part set based on the topography of the keyboard, and its sonic possibilities and implications. The minor triads of C#, D# and G# all have white keys immediately above and below the chords. The Major triads of C and G have black keys immediately ABOVE the lowest and BELOW the highest notes. These two elements, along with the Major triads on the three sharp-key chords, have been combined into a haunting and ethereal setting, with the left-hand accompaniment stating these shapes, and the melody in the treble taking its cue from the scale implied by the chords below. Octaves, triplets, and 16ths are all part of the swirling mist of melody that surrounds the highly stable and uniform accompaniment. Each measure begins with the low octave on the root, and jumps up to state the shape being used, using dom 7ths to transition to the next sound and shape. Chopin and Liszt did not share many musical values, but they DID both utilize the shape and particular formations of various keys to suit their expressive needs. And, so we salute them both here, in this first of three pieces using this time-honored tradition of pianistic, yet evocative composition. MBB.

Yet, there are only a handful, no pun intended, I guess! of reasonable arrangements for piano solo. The Kocsis setting has a TON of extra arpeggios, mostly derived from the orchestral treatment by the composer. My setting here takes the most economical and stylistically precise approach to integrating the original melody and accompaniment into a single musical expression. There are NO notes that are not directly on the page of the accomp or the tune. Notwithstanding,the piece is by no means a simple one, given its key, and the composer's penchant for borrowed chords. So, we have done our best to make the altered spellings both clear and still voice and key-relevant. A nice four-pages-facing layout for a single-sided printer. A modest tempo is presented, and the piece can go faster if you have the time to practice it enough! New edition has some changes to R-L hand distribution, and three editorial fixes. MBB .

We credit Isaac Watts for helping to popularize “hymns†over “Psalms†in Protestant churches in the 18th Century. The texts of “Psalms†came directly from the Bible; “hymns†were more interpretive and reflective. Whether to allow the use of hymns rather than Psalms in church was a controversial topic of the 17th and 18th centuries! ♫ Watts used Psalm 96 and 98 with Genesis 3 to create the lyrics of Joy to the World. For over a hundred years, the lyrics were sung to various Psalm tunes. ♫ Lowell Mason published our current version with the melody ANTIOCH in 1848. He attributed the melody to George Frederick Handel by Lowell. We can find several fragments of this melody in Handel’s music, there is no complete statement of the melody in Handel. And so ANTIOCH is now attributed to Mason. ♫ The Hallelujah Chorus serves as the introduction and the conclusion of this arrangement. It was first published within Messiah, an oratorio by George Frederick Handel in 1741. The lyrics were created by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible. ♫ “The Lord is come†is the present perfect tense. It seems archaic, yet the present perfect tense has a distinct meaning. Finally, the music of Charles Koechlin is no longer an insider tip, but is being discovered for both the concert hall and the CD! With our edition we are now presenting a largely unknown facet of his work. Because hardly anyone knows that Koechlin turned to film at an advanced age. Although Koechlin was aware that there was no prospect of a cinematic implementation, he even designed a film scenario in 20 scenes in which he himself should appear in a double role! At the age of 66 he saw the actress Lilian Harvey as Princess Marie-Christine in Princesse a vos ordres in a Parisian movie theater . He was so enchanted that he made the little pieces Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton for her composed - captivating miniatures that were not written as film music, but drawn from film experiences.

Of the unfinished compositions Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton, notated on two to four lines, we first publish two volumes with twelve piano pieces each. Further booklets in other instrumentation will follow. With the seven planned issues Le Portrait de Daisy Hamilton , Charles Koechlin's last, as yet unpublished works from the field of film will finally be made available to posterity.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1125813). Another arrangement that had its genesis as a vocal chart for Five By Design. However, this piece went on to be performed in our holiday show, “A Winter’s Evening.†I have always loved the Gustav Holst melody to Christina Rossetti’s poem, subsequently it was that setting that I chose to arrange for our group. When I was selecting pieces for my second collection of Christmas Preludes, I knew this would be among them. The piece starts out quite gently, and in my mind’s ear I hear a cello and oboe establishing a mood of utter serenity and calm as the snow gently falls outside the frost-covered window. Soon the oboe is joined by a clarinet as they play a duet while the cello continues the gentle sway of eighth notes. For the pianist, there must be great control of the left hand to keep it as calm as possible while the melody floats above, just as the snow falls to the earth. As the second verse begins, the right hand now plays a triplet pattern beneath the melody. It is a gentle breeze, stirred by the wings of angels and cherubim, upon which the crystalline flakes swirl and dance in the cold night air. All the while the left hand continues its steady motion of eighth notes. Halfway through the triplet pattern moves to the left hand and the right hand takes up the eighth notes while still keeping the melody above all. The verse comes to a close with a slowing of the tempo to emphasize the importance of what the poet states in the last lines of the poem: “Yet what I can I give Him, — Give my heart.†It is all that any of us can do, and all that we are asked to do.
