The right hand chordal pattern, being somewhat repetitive, represents the pathway and the lyrical left hand represents their conversation and the curiously dramatic things that they see and hear. It is a piece of only moderate difficulty in its structure but the opportunity for a very advanced technique, sensitive application of dynamics, and lyrical phrasing provides an opportunity for the superior pianist to present a masterful performance.

How Beautiful are the Feet is one of the best loved arias from G F Handel’s oratorio The Messiah. This version is arranged as a solo for Descant Recorder with piano accompaniment.The original 1741 version of The Messiah presented How Beautiful are the Feet as a duet for two altos and choir, but in 1749 Handel revised the piece as a solo aria for soprano. This revision forms the basis for this arrangement. Before 1903, Scriabin was greatly influenced by the music of Frédéric Chopin and composed in a relatively tonal, late Romantic idiom. Later, and independently of his influential contemporary, Arnold Schoenberg, Scriabin developed a much more dissonant musical language that had transcended usual tonality but was not atonal. He composed almost exclusively for solo piano and for orchestra. Compositions for left hand alone are valuable in developing and testing phrasing in the left hand. The most beautiful tone quality will be elusive if the left hand is weak in technique or phrasing. ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I use an Amazon Kindle with Mobile Sheets Pro and an Air Turn blue tooth foot pedal to practice and perform piano music. Similar products available to provide other tablets the same functionality. ♫ The pieces in this series have not been arranged, but most have been edited slightly, and have been formatted to fit screen size. For example, in the tablet versions, first and second endings are often removed and the repeated measures and endings written into the music so the performer can avoid having to go back to previous pages. These kinds of section repeats were invented to spare the composer’s time and the cost of extra paper and ink. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. This quiet, sparse and beautiful music was composed in memory of the composer’s late wife. Because her ‘English’ name, Sansan, sounds like the number 33 in Mandarin Chinese, the piece is based on the numbers 3, 33 and various multiples of them. The numbers were used to shape all aspects of the music, but in performance the piece still flows simply and naturally. It is technically not difficult for performers, but they do need good ears for color, balance, phrasing and creating a sense of natural open space. There are also places where listening to and coordinating balance and phrasing between competing rhythmic layers needs careful attention. (Performance time ca. 4 minutes, or longer.)

Located on the Columbia River, it has varied climates, homes built on the water, beautiful views, and a landscape of rolling hills in the beautiful state of Oregon. The music is an adaption of four of the pieces in Mood Suite by the same composer, which has been enjoyed by students, teachers, and professional pianists! The set is comprised of teaching pieces, each in its own scale and composition style, and has been descriptive of a variety of interpretations, names changes, and events that are portrayed by the music. PDX transforms four of the pieces to depict: The Banfield (Portland’s first freeway); Fog, Rain, Wind (its changing climate); Pioneer Square (a favorite spot used for a vast variety of events); and Tilikum Crossing (the new land bridge which is laden with fun). Its historic premiere at Pacifica Radio (KPFA) in Berkeley on 4 October, 1991 to inaugurate their new facility is included in Nicolas Slonimsky's book Music Since 1900. It has been reviewed and written about extensively.
