A varied set of three character pieces, quasi-preludes. They are technically advanced, suitable for study and enjoyment. Number one is murky, with a melody bordering on serialism. Fast rippling octave arpeggios present the main technical challenge, and musically the difficulty lies in creating a delicate tonal balance of melody and accompaniments. Number two presents much material using double thirds in duple meter against an accompaniment in compound meter. It is triumphant and mostly optimistic in character. Number three is inspired by the harmonies of Ravel and explores the technical problem of maintaining a melody line with accompaniment that frequently jumps registers in the same hand. The melody is found in the grace notes of the right hand, and they should be mostly played on the beat. I hope that these are enjoyed by anyone who stumbles upon them!

Piacevole Pleasing, pleasant, smiling, playful scampering along without much sense of urgency. Doesn't require advanced technical or reading skills other than being familiar with reading and playing in the key of A flat. It does require the ability to play very evenly though, nothing bumpy in this piece! Level 6. II. AgitatoLike a wildly spinning top that only twice comes to an abrupt stop, the A section pressing forward and unforgiving, the B section playful and light, this needs to be played Allegrissimo which is very fast but with a different character than Presto. It requires a well-developed technique that can handle RH passage work with ease. Level 8, due to the very fast tempo. III. FantasiaStarts very sweet and gentle, softly like a Nocturne - though without the lilting character - but quickly changes character, several times, before developing into a fff coda-like ending which after just a few measures disappears into nothingness. Key changes and chromatic writing as well as unexpected harmonic shifts make this piece potentially not easy to read. However, rhythmically it is uncomplicated, and technically, everything fits the hands very well. For instance, LH arpeggiated accompaniment patterns over more than one octave are always ascending and hardly ever fill the entire measure. What this piece requires is a well-developed sense of flair and an intuitive ability to create drama and suspense, both with touch and timing. Level 8.IV. FugaceNote-wise identical to the first piece, Piacevole, but played much faster, in a fleeting manner, flying away. Needs an extremely light touch. Level 7, due to tempo and the need for subtle shading.

The structure of the whole cycle of five pieces is somehow symmetric, since the pieces number 2 and 4 are similar in character, tempo and ryhthmic pattern. Also, the central piece is the most different of all others. The fifth piece, however, doesn't recall the first one (except that both share the same speed), but rather opens the cycle and points out to somewhere else. You can also find a certain system in the keys: the tonal centres are respectively Db, D, F#, B, A. If you order these pitches wisely, you get a usual chord: B minor 7th with 9th (B, D, F, A, C#). Does this detail make the music better? Certainly, since the composer is a fetichist. Style/genre: Neoclassical, minimal. These four atonal works were composed spontaneously at the Music Studio of Fred Scorza in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1989. Though the language is typical of the so-called post-Webern avant-garde led by Boulez and Stockhausen, these four pieces are in a lighter vein full of surprises throughout. The title, a pun on the telephone dialing system known as touch-tones, refers to the spontaneous improvisatory character of the music.

Each of the miniatures has a headline that describes its character. Although there are no dynamics, they can be derived from the headline, tempo and rhythm.

It requires a well-developed technique that can handle RH passage work with ease. Level 8, due to the very fast tempo.

Christian Sinding (1856-1941) gained worldwide fame with his piano piece 'Frühlingsrauschen', which is likely to be his most famous work still today. The '5 Klavierstücke' Op. 97, created in 1909, are bravura pieces the late Romantic harmony of which is sometimes reminiscent of Richard Strauss. The effective brilliant piano setting is characterised by a widely elaborated melody and can be easily mastered by the advanced player. Large arpeggios characterise the first piece 'Des Morgens'. 'Auf dem Wasser' is an evocative tone painting in swaying 12/8 time with powerful unison passages in the middle section. 'Intermezzo' appears capricious, with dance-like figures. 'Gewitter' is a brilliant concert study in the style of Liszt. The work concludes with the piece 'Aquarell', a poetic salon piece revelling in harmonies, notated as a clear piano setting.
