The Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Victor Rosenbaum, did the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 with Mana as soloist. My work, Seven Steps To Heaven, for string orchestra was also on the program. After the concert we all went to a local restaurant for a bite to eat, and Mana asked me if I would be interested in writing her a piano piece. I said, Sure!!! For years I have been a fan of Glenn Gould’s recordings of the music by J.S. Bach. I am also a fan of the keyboard sonatas of Bach’s son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. To prepare myself for this work for Mana, I delved into the scores and recordings of these two awe-inspiring musicians/composers, in particular the Toccatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach. I wrote the entire work during a three-week stay at the American Academy in Rome, 2009-10. There are 12 concertos in the collection and the a minor violin concerto is the 6th concerto in the set. It was originally scored for solo violin, small string orchestra, and continuo. The popularity of these concertos was rivaled only by the Four Seasons from his Opus 8 collection. This arrangement of the second movement captures the detailed melodic line of the solo violin with the simplicity of the accompaniment.

These 9 concerts are some of the many instrumental works by Antonio Vivaldi. We decided to transcribe these piano concertos for the form only, the melodic intensity, the harmonic behavior and style which in our opinion we felt it was important as a reference to describe the Vivaldi's works. Are concertos extracted from very important works such as: The estro armonico Op.3 of 12 concertos published in Amsterdam between 1717 and 1722, dedicated to Ferdinando de 'Medici. Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'invenzione Op.8 of 12 concerts, opera of the four seasons composed around 1723 and published in Amsterdam in 1725 and that some of the concerts Vivaldi wrote for Johann Pisendel of Dresden. Later the same Pisendel It made some elaborations on these concerts. Other concerts we transcribed were extracted from works for flute, string orchestra and continuo. In this small collection are inserted concerts that the author has transcribed taking as a basis the manuscripts, some kept at the National Library of Turin and others kept at the Saxon State Library in Dresden. Therefore all the transcripts are original and unique of its kind.

Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction.My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement.At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. This time two movements from familiar sonatinas by the German/Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) have been transformed into miniature concerto movements by adding and interpolating short tutti passages at appropriate points in the form. Not a note has been added or subtracted from the original keyboard solos, so that a student who has mastered the originals may play this Concertino simply by memorizing the exact points in the original pieces where additional music for the orchestra (second piano) has been added and they must wait to continue. A student may use any standard edition of either Sonatina to learn and perform these movements. I hope that studying and performing the movements of the Concertino Classico will give an advancing student an enjoyable taste of performing as a concerto soloist using familiar repertoire, as well as providing a bridge to the standard keyboard concerto repertory.

The work has 3 short movements and is dedicated to Dr. Esteban Barquero, a conductor and dear friend from Costa Rica. The first movement “Bajo la lluvia†(Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain.“Rocio†(Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives.The third movement “Tempestad†(Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc†As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.†The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. This movement is very demanding for the performers, especially for the soloist.
