In the late 1800's this Union song was written from the perspective of a Union soldier in General Sherman's famous, march through the confederate state of Georgia to the sea. It was so popular that the printed music sold over 500,000 copies and General Sherman even had to ask that it not be played at gatherings in his honor. This arrangement is extramusical in that it includes battle conditions. There are fife and drum sections that depict both General Sherman's army and General Slocum's army of the Ohio that enters from Sherman's left flank during the battle.

Souvenir de Porto Rico, Op. 31, is a musical composition for piano by American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk written from 1857 during a tour in Puerto Rico. Dedicated to the Dutch piano virtuoso and salon music composer Ernest Henry Lubeck, and published in Mainz circa 1860 with the subtitle of Marche des Gibaros, it is based on the Christmas folk song 'Si me dan pasteles, denmelos calientes', performed by local peasants known as Jbaros.
The piece makes use of Latin-American and Afro-American melodies and rhythms almost fifty years before early ragtime and jazz would popularize its use.Souvenir de Porto Rico was written in the last trimester of 1857, when of Gottschalk's stay at the sugar plantation of English-born Mr. Cornelius Cartwright, in Plazuela. At the time, Gottschalk was on vacation with singer Adelina Patti and her father. He would decide not to leave Puerto Rico, but instead remain there for weeks. During this period he composed a number of additional pieces after the local musical styles.Gottschalk would say about the setting where he composed the piece: "[I was] perched upon the edge of a crater, [and] my cabin overlooked the whole country. Every evening I moved my piano out upon the terrace, and played for myself alone, everything that the scene opened up before me inspired. It was there that I composed 'Marche des Gibaros.'.

The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work.The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work.The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine.The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend.The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano.The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures.The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux.The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away.The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows.The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

The song was written by Paul Simon over several months in 1963 and 1964. A studio audition led to the duo signing a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original 'acoustic' version of the song was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City and included on their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.. Released on October 19, 1964,[2] the album was a commercial failure and led to the duo disbanding; Simon returned to England, and Art Garfunkel to his studies at Columbia University. In 1965, the song began to attract airplay at radio stations in Boston, Massachusetts, and throughout Florida. The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965. Simon & Garfunkel were not informed of the song's remix until after its release. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending January 1, 1966, leading the duo to reunite and hastily record their second album, which Columbia titled Sounds of Silence in an attempt to capitalize on the song's success. The remixed single version of the song was included on this follow-up album. It was featured in the 1967 film The Graduate and was included on the film's soundtrack album. It was additionally released on the Mrs. Robinson 'EP' in 1968, along with three other songs from the film: Mrs. Robinson, April Come She Will and Scarborough Fair/Canticle. The song was a top-ten hit in multiple countries worldwide, among them Australia, Austria, West Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. Generally considered a classic folk rock song, the song was added to the National Recording Registry in the Library of Congress for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically important in 2012, along with the rest of the Sounds of Silence album. Originally titled The Sounds of Silence on the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., the song was shortened for later compilations, beginning with the 1972 compilation album Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits.[3]
