This is a set of three piano miniatures, which, as part of the compositional process, originally derived melodic material by setting lines from Shakespeare's Sonnets to music. In the first piece, within ternary form, the opening section explores sequences of 'chord building'. This is followed by a middle section based on arpeggio figures, before returning to the initial ideas in inversion. In the second piece, also in ternary form, the initial section builds harmonies from a simple two-note rocking idea. Then follows a middle part based on a sequence of semiquaver arpeggio figures, before returning to a variation of the opening section, developing into a 6/8 coda. The third piece is essentially a set of textural variations on a folk-like theme, the tune appearing a fourth higher each time. This final piece employs simple variation techniques that are in-keeping with the folk genre, such as drones, modality, and parallel harmonies. Towards the end, a descending sequence leads to a final variation on the theme in the opening key, in rhythmic augmentation. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Prelude and Fugue in E minor, BWV 855, is the 10th prelude and fugue for keyboard (harpsichord) in the first book of The Well Tempered Clavier, composed in 1722 by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Prelude in E minor, BWV 855a, features as No. 18 (Praeludium 5) in the 1720 Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. BWV 855a may also refer to both this Prelude and a Fughetta in the same key, an early version of BWV 855. Ólafsson teamed up with director Magnús Leifsson to shoot the video in a fish processing plant in Iceland, complete with grand piano. They use the fish, an early Christian symbol, to allude to the mysticism and timelessness of Bach’s music – as changeable as water, it has to be understood at a metalevel, given the many different ways in which composition, transcription and performance can be interwoven. The Prelude in E minor, BWV 855a, features as No. 18 (Praeludium 5) in the 1720 Klavierbüchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. BWV 855a may also refer to both this Prelude and a Fughetta in the same key, an early version of BWV 855. Alexander Siloti made a piano arrangement in B minor of the Prelude BWV 855a.Ólafsson teamed up with director Magnús Leifsson to shoot the video in a fish processing plant in Iceland, complete with grand piano. They use the fish, an early Christian symbol, to allude to the mysticism and timelessness of Bach’s music – as changeable as water, it has to be understood at a metalevel, given the many different ways in which composition, transcription and performance can be interwoven. Everything is there in Bach’s music, says the pianist, who transports the composer’s keyboard writing to new shores on his latest recording. This is the first in a set of three piano miniatures, which, as part of the compositional process, originally derived melodic material by setting lines from Shakespeare's Sonnets to music. In this ternary form piece, the opening section explores sequences of 'chord building'. This is followed by a middle section based on arpeggio figures, before returning to the initial ideas in inversion. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Morning Impressions was written during the covid lockdown. My jobs were on hiatus and I no longer had an artificial schedule to keep, so I drifted to the natural rhythm of life and began to rise and retire according to the sun. In the process I rediscovered the beauty of mornings. I wrote this song to describe all of the delights and meaning of morning. The piece begins with trills and brillante runs indicating the excitement of daybreak and the first glimpse of the crack of dawn. Then the twitters as the birds awaken. The B section portrays the stillness and calm of the earliest morning when nothing else is awake. C section shows the beauty of nature as it begins to be illuminated. The D section has more energy and movement as the world begins to come to life. E is a simple chorale to nature and from F the drama and intensity build to the actual sunrise. The style of the piece is Contemporary Classical with a fusion of New Age, Classical, and Romantic. This composition was chosen to be featured at the 2022 Symposium of Caribbean Art Music.
