I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan. About Six Preludes I started composing this set of Six Preludes for piano in 2014 and revised in 2020. The first piece of this set is Walking. There are different types of walks one can imagine. Octaves in the left hand at the opening represents walking sluggishly, whilst the middle section’s running right hand and jokingly bass notes representing a quick stroll. The Adagio recititavo part represents tip-toeing and finally the quasi cadenza part represents a trip on the floor, ouch! The second piece, which is nicknamed Joke, is a parody of Chopin’s Scherzo no. 1 in B minor, Op. 20. Take this piece as a lame unfunny joke, as in the slow coda, which is a sigh after listening to this joke. Night Song, as the name says, means a piece to be played at night, most commonly associate with pieces like Nocturnes, Barcarolles etc. The fourth piece, Chopin, is a homage to Chopin. I chose his Prelude in G and B flat minor, Op. 28 no. 3 and no. 16 respectively as sources of inspirations. Vision is a poly-tonality piece. Sometimes what we think or see, may not always end up the way it is. Hence, I hope to create this double effect by using the keys at the same time. The final piece of this set is a Fughetta. A fughetta is a small fugue. This piece is actually a piano transcription of the 3rd movement of my Three Colours (for Clarinet in B flat, Violin and Cello) which is composed and premiered in 2012. I revised and edited some sections. This is a 12-tone work. The P0 and R0 makes up the subject of this piece, while R11 makes up the countersubject. Six Preludes is dedicated to my friend Ng Yu Fei.

Opus/Catalog Number: HWV 582 Key/Tone: G Major Movements/Sections: Sonatina Year/Date of Composition: 1721-1722 Difficulty: Grade 5/12 (Intermediate) Obs.: This piece is part of the Aylesford manuscript, where it is entitled Fuga. The Italian word fuga means an escape, or a flight. Although this is not a strictly formed fugue (in the style of Bach's fugues, for instance), it does feature imitation, fleeing and chasing between the two hands. Although Handel's manuscript does not contain any ornaments, cadential trills are suggested to measures 6, 8, 12, 16 and 18. Our edition thus contains suggestions for realizing these trills in accordance with the performance practice of the Baroque period. Namely, such trills begin ON the beat, on the upper auxiliary note. More on less repercussions may be played depending on the player's taste and ability. Please note finally that some editions show an E in measure 5 (7th note, left hand). This could be justified by what is done in measure 7. Handel's manuscript however clearly shows a G.

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. This piece portrays one miraculous day out in nature with the weather, as well as the tunes and moods changing constantly. Here I used every piano register to create contrasts. It begins with the sun rising over the horizon with piano tremolo in a high register almost as a dew dripping from the grass, impressionistic melody in the middle register, and more forceful intervals in the lower register as a sign, that something majestic awaits. The next part is an innocent, lightsome fugue with baroque elements, that ends on a minor scale, creating suspense and uncertainty. After a little melancholic section in Largo (slow tempo), the storm has finally started. Thunder - Dramatic octaves in the lower register with glimpses of melody from the intro turn into a tempestuous dance with arpeggios in the left hand and somewhat sweet melody in the right hand. The last section is a calm after the storm. Little raindrops falling from the roofs in the upper register create the melody from the intro as if reminiscing of how joyful was the beginning of the day. The piece finishes with a feeling of unfulfillment and expectation of what surprises the new day will bring.
