In 2009 I started playing a writing music for piano solo. This is my first composition, inspired by Yann Tiersen's piano pieces which I was listening to at the time. With this piece I wanted to express the freedom (libertà in Italian) of being able to express my feelings through music and approaching this new advendure of piano playing. However, being perfectionist and insecure, I never published my performance until 2014, when I released it on my Bandcamp (https://mttbernardini.bandcamp.com/album/la-libert-single). I composed several other pieces for piano solo between 2009 and 2015, which I never published. To this date, 23 years later, I decided to take the challenge and finally publish my music. Feel free to play it and give your taste to it.

This work was begun in 1981 and underwent revisions on and off for 28 years until it was finally completed in 2009. This piece is intended only for first-rate virtuoso pianists. Light by the Beauty of MusicThis movement opens with a driving energy that does not diminish until the final passages.  The opening theme continues to cycle over accenting sonorities in counterpoint with a 2nd theme that spins forth in perpetual motion.  From here emerges a pair of folk themes in tandem. I quote the Romanian folk song:  On the Freedom Plains along with a counter theme that I composed in a minor mode. I want to thank my Moldovian friend, Natalia Rojcovscaia-Tumaha for inspiring the inclusion of this quote in this movement. This basic cry for freedom among people that have identified with a country where generations have lived and died was the sentiment that I wanted to capture in this music. The movement ends with an unresolved flourish that slowly dies away suggesting the mysterious uncertain nature of music. Movement II. DeliquesceThe second movement is a simple song-like narrative that speaks in short rhythmic open phrases. The music progression in variation form.  All the while, a spinning thread of notes orbits this narrative, eventually cascading into a perpetual motif that ends suspended in space.Movement III.  Light Upon WaterThe third movement continues the perpetual motion of the second movement and transforms into a running tapestry of harmonic statements that build to a euphoric choral declaration.  After a reflective, improvisatory middle section, the cascading perpetual motion of the opening returns. The conclusion of the movement is signaled by what I call a crossing cadence:  the theme in full chordal orchestration is accelerando in the right hand and is retrograde, ritardando in the left hand.  Finally, a short coda finishes the sonata.  © 2022 William Grosvenor Neil  williamneil.net   thecomposerstudio.com  support: thecomposerstudio@gmail.com.

After being married for several years I realized that I had never written a love song for my wife. So, one day during a lull in guitar lessons I wrote her a song. I truly believe she is the light in my life and that without her my life would be about as interesting as a stone. When I am with her I feel that I can accomplish anything. She inspires me to be better than I am because she is in every way better than I am. She has more patience, kindness, is more caring and less concerned about how others view her than anyone else I know. I'm glad I finally worked up the courage to ask her to marry me. I was afraid to open my mouth and speak what was on my mind. After many months, when I thought I was going to lose her completely, I opened up my feelings to her, and to my great relief she had some of the same feelings that I had. She didn't say yes she would marry me right away, (I had to lock her in a room to get that response) however, over time she did decide of her own free will and choice to marry me. Hanon Piano / Keyboard Exercises 1 - 30Condensed and Simplified for Beginners Easy ReadingIn this short book you will find condensed and simplified versions of the Hanon piano finger exercises 1 - 30 as well as the major, harmonic minor and melodic minor scales in every key (two octaves). What is Hanon? The ‘Hanon Virtuoso Pianist’ is a collection of piano finger exercises designed to give equal strength, agility and flexibility to all five fingers of both hands. Written by Charles-Louis Hanon sometime in the 1800s, these exercises without doubt have become one of the most widely used techniques by today’s pianists. In my opinion these are the best finger exercises available. One really great thing about these exercises is that they are applicable to both absolute beginners and advanced players alike, particularly as the reading ability required is minimal. Whatever your ability, these exercises will help improve your technique and finger strength. Having been written well over 100 years ago, the original work is now in the public domain and therefore digital copies can be acquired free of charge on the internet. However, most of these are very poor quality and the instructions are mainly in French or Russian - neither of which work too well for me! For the full version I personally recommend the ‘Alfred’ Edition edited by Allan Small which is clear and has instructions in English. So why do I need this book? The whole point is to make it easy to read and to reduce page turns - less is more! In the full version the first 30 exercises take up fifty pages whereas here there are three exercises per page for the first 20, then two per page for the next 10, reducing the fifty pages to just twelve. I initially produced this for my own use only but figured that others may like to take advantage of what I’ve done. Does this mean that the print is just smaller? No, not at all. If you are familiar with these exercises you will know that they are repeated patterns which ascend and descend for two octaves diatonically. To condense and simplify them and consequently eliminate an enormous amount of page turns I have shown: the all-important fingering on the first pattern (as per the original)then the repeated second patternthen ‘changeover’ patterns between ascending and descending - which are sometimes slightly differentthen finally the last pattern of each exercise which again is often very slightly different. I have also written them two octaves apart (for easy reading) and only shown them for one octave instead of two. In practice they should be played one octave apart and ultimately be practiced for two octaves. This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

Biblicals: Concerto for Solo Piano in Five Movements (1998) was commissioned from thecomposer by an anonymous benefactor for pianist Kathleen Supové in tribute of her tirelesssupport of new music.The work is in five movements, each inspired by a different biblical quotation which isquoted in the score before each movement. If possible, these passages should be printed inthe program or read aloud before the performance of the work. Each movement isprogrammatic only in an internal sense. While the movements do not attempt to directlyportray the action of the passage in a storybook sense, they do attempt to capture the overallaffect of the verse. The form of the work is as a concerto for solo piano drawing on a titlethat has been used in the past by numerous composers. Likewise, although the work does notinvolve an orchestra, I have titled it concerto because it contains elements of a concerto solopart and because of the virtuosity required to perform the work. The work explores a widerangeof styles from quasi-lyrical to highly chromatic. Throughout, the work has a rhythmicintensity which should be observed by the performer.The first movement, Hovering Over the Waters, makes use of an irregular rhythmic patternintroduced in the opening measure and used throughout the work. Irregular and nervousrhythms using chromatic intervals pervade the entire movement.The second movement, Baldhead, is a forceful and loud movement making use of the clashbetween diatonic and pentatonic clusters. It is relentless in its pounding energy, irregularrhythms, and volume. This movement is dedicated to American composer Daniel Pinkhamon the occasion his 75th birthday in 1998. The connection of this movement to Pinkhamcomes in the superimposition of pentatonic and diatonic clusters, a technique used so well inone of my favorite Pinkham works, Blessings for Organ (1978).The third movement, Forgiven and Free, presents a tranquil scene involving the building ofchords, standard and otherwise, through the adding of tones one at a time. Brief chromaticmelodies appear and then disappear quickly.The fourth movement, Under the Sun, makes use of a motive involving four chords over a lefthand bass consisting of a major-tenth chord. This motive appears throughout the movement,constantly breaking in and interrupting the action. A variety of irregular rhythmic motivesappear throughout as a contrast to the main motive with its strict rhythm. Quotes of nurseryrhyme tunes are hidden throughout the movement as well in various forms.The fifth movement, The Seventh Angel, is a fast and furious tarantella. As the movementflies by a variety of musical ideas emerge and then disappear into the main motive again.The music continues to get faster and faster and finally the movement ends with a furiousprogression from the bottom to top of the piano and then a thunderous unison chord in thelower register.
