Ascher and Paul Williams.Most people hear the intro of this piece and immediately think of Kermit the Frog, strumming his banjo and singing this beautiful little melody. It is one of the very first sheets of music that I went out and purchased at our local music store. I was so excited to learn it! Fast forward many years later (ahem!) and I am so happy to see it entertaining a whole new generation of people. On YouTube, Kermit uploaded a special performance of it in April 2020!I performed it as a duet with a student at a recital and it was a big hit (we even came up with our own choreography to go along with the piece!) This melody is one of those timeless and iconic pieces that will forever live in my heart. I was excited to see that I would be able to share an arrangement I made!My version starts out in the key of A major and offers a simple, more pianistic left hand accompaniment. Smooth, flowing arpeggios accompany most of the piece. The first verse is left to be fairly simple and lets the melody shine. The second verse has more harmony in the right hand and some fills that build on the melody. The key change has more movement and signals the last verse done in a very full, orchestra-like sound. The piano scores used for the original sheet music of these folk songs, hymns, and spirituals of the 1800’s were purposely made simple in order to sell as many copies as possible. The idea being that if someone in every family could read the most basic piano score, then the rest of the family could gather around the piano (usually an inexpensive upright) and sing along in the days before records, cassette tapes, CD’s, Radio, Television, iPods, YouTube etc. Nowadays, the few people who can sight-read at the piano are more musically literate, often being able to read and play classical compositions by Bach, Handel, Scarlatti, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. They, therefore, deserve more interesting and rewarding arrangements of these wonderful musical treasures of the 1800’s. Furthermore, since these arrangements for piano and voice can also be played as piano solos, the piano scores are designed to be of enjoyable musical interest on their own; that is, orchestrated for the piano as if they were sketches for an ensemble of instruments. These arrangements can also be considered theatrical improvisations on the original sheet music. Following the best improvisational guidelines, they are based on 1) the implications of the title; 2) the meaning and words of the lyrics; 3) the melody; & 4) the harmonic pattern. For example: Oh, Susanna! is obviously a humorous nonsense song and is therefore arranged to sound carefree, jaunty, and joyful. Also, since the singer refers to my banjo on my knee, the piano arrangement imitates the sound of a banjo as it is played for singing and dancing, strumming its rhythmic way through the simple harmonic changes. You can see and hear the music for most of these contemporary arrangements on Sheet Music Plus and some also on YouTube. Here's how to play "Singin' in the Rain" on piano!
With this piano sheet music, you can play "Singing in the Rain" just like it appeared on the soundtrack to the original 1952 film (recorded, of course, by Gene Kelly).
It's an accurate piano transcription of the piece in the song's original key.
The whole melody is included in the piano part of this arrangement, so it sounds great as an instrumental version. But of course, you can also use these piano sheets to accompany a singer, or sing along yourself!
"Singin' in the Rain" is a song composed by Nacio Herb Brown, with lyrics by Arthud Freed.
It served as an inspiration for the 1952 film of the same name, and was famously performed by Gene Kelly in the film.
