George Gershwin died two months after the film's release, and he was posthumously nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 1937 Oscars but lost out to Sweet Leilani which had been made tremendously popular by Bing Crosby.

I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

Chick Corea died at the age of 69 on February 9, 2021. I have been a huge fan of his music and piano playing since I heard the album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968). Assisted by Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, Chick was in absolutely rare form on that seminal recording!!! As a tribute to him and a in memoriam to his musicianship, I wrote these movements for solo piano inspired by his compositions in the album Children's Songs (1984). Corea's Children's Songs is a suite of twenty solo piano pieces, each lasting between 1 to 2 minutes. These are truly little gems of composition in miniature, like the Chopin Preludes. But every time I hear them I always felt that these nice little pieces, at least to my ears, always came up short. A lot of them seem to end in mid-air. In my humble opinion, they needed development. But that is of course coming from the mouth of a classical composer, me. LOL!!! Nevertheless, in this tribute, I have taken some ideas from the original Corea songs and reinvented them in my own fashion. You will detect a thing or two from Chick, but mostly it's TOL music. Since my songs get development, the entire suite consists of ten movements, rather than Corea's twenty. Enjoy!!! Children's Song No. 1 ... Moderato Children's Song No. 2 ... Composed in 2016, Madeleines is similar to my two sets of Spanish Lessons (1988 and 2001) which are both suites of character pieces for piano inspired by my admittedly limited travel in Spain. Madeleines is inspired by a much earlier hairbrained trip I took to France (and the rest of the Grand Tour) with my sister when I was in college. The title refers to Proust's episode of the madeleine, in which involuntary memory overwhelms the protagonist when he bites into one of these small cakes. I also sometimes experience poignant memories from our fondly remembered trip triggered by various catalysts. The five episodes in this set of pieces attempt to capture the essence of some of these memories. The first piece, MeÌmoire triste dans un cafeÌ (sad memory in a cafeÌ), serves the purpose of a preÌlude. One might conclude that the madeleine is sampled in this location. Il pleut aÌ Brest (It is raining in Brest) evokes memories of the wet weather in Brest, a city in Brittany near the coast. I was curious about this area because, during our travels, we met a boy in Paris with dark and dangerous eyes named François (François et ses yeux dangereux) who was from that area. In Il pleut the sound of rain alternates with church bells and fog horns (one of the poetic sensations I remember vividly about Brest). The third piece (François) is a blend of a barcarolle and a funeral march. I continued to send one-way letters to François after we returned and one day the French police called to tell me that he was dead and that they had found one of my letters on his body, which had been tossed into the Seine. They wanted more information, and they revealed that he had been smuggling drugs out of Turkey. I think the next piece, Promenade dans la meÌnagerie de Versailles (Walk in the zoo at Versailles), is tempered by later memories of a trip I took to the zoo at Schönbrunn palace near Vienna, the oldest Baroque zoo, which was in a terrible state of decay when I saw it, hence the wistful air. The finale of the set, Madeleine deÌteste les devoirs (Madeleine hates homework) is a bow to the French primer I grew up with, which had as one of its main characters a little girl who I think may have been named Madeleine. I know her father was named François. My memories are mixed up, the actual François Thibaud is remembered as the inventor of the fast-track method of learning French, which was in vogue when I first studied it in 6th grade. The idea here is that Madeleine, the daughter of François, is having a tantrum and playing with her hoops or a bike rather than doing her English homework.John Carbon

The piano pieces by Nikolay Andreyevitch Roslawez selected here and published for the first time complement the already published piano sonatas (ED 7941, ED 8391, ED 8392) and individual pieces (ED 7907). Created in the years 1919 and 1921, they represent the central phase of the composer's development and are characteristic of Roslawez' mature style. Although reminiscent of Skryabin in their musical language, the six miniatures 'Berceuse', 'Danse', 'Valse', '2 Préludes' and 'Poème' are technically easy to play and are suitable for piano lessons. Roslawez studied composition and violin in Moscow. He was one of the leading figures of the musical scene in the 1920s. Treated with increasing hostility for political reasons, up to being barred from pursuing his career, he spent the last years of his life in poverty.
