This is reflected in the start of the piece where the chords are slow and cautious but they eventually turn into quaver broken chords as Whiskers begins to have a look around the house, taking care in every step he takes. As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.

Isele the Frog is the tenth in a series of fifteen original contemporary compositions for piano, titled 15 Animal Compositions for Piano and created to musically describe the movement and habits of specific wildlife creatures. From music notes to words: Isele the frog is hopping along happily through the wet grass of the Okavango Delta, dreaming of juicy insects, fat flies and delicious bugs to fill up his tummy with. Always unpredictable, his sudden moves surprise a huge red-brown bug which he catches for breakfast in an instant. After devouring the delicacy, he continues with what he does best; bouncing from one destination to another. He comes across another frog; fat, grey and intimidating, it forces him to follow another path. Jumping along frantically, Isele becomes aware of a beautiful marabou stork standing like a statue in the swamp. With no intention of becoming a gourmet meal for the bird, he buries himself in the mud where he stays hidden until the marabou takes off. Creeping out from under, he investigates his surroundings to ensure that there is no danger lurking around; then he leaps off towards his next destination..

Whiskers now begins on his curious adventure into the unknown. He begins carefully stepping through the forest with caution into unfamiliar territory, his ear pricked to listen out for any sounds that might be someone or something else. As he makes his way through the forest looking for something to explore, the wind begins to pick up. The trees move in the wind and the leaves rustle and fly around Whiskers which causes him to panic.As the piece moves to a more active section with the use of semiquavers, Whiskers begins to run further into the forest, losing his sense of direction from the confusion caused by the wind and all the leaves about. Whiskers frantically tries to find his way back home but the wind grows stronger blowing more leaves around which makes it even harder to see where he’s going.Eventually the leaves settle back on the ground as the wind dies down and comes to a rest. Whiskers has stumbled across something he has never seen before in this forest, a house. It looks abandoned and like someone used to live there many decades ago. He stops in his tracks to take a good long look at the mysterious looking house that towers before him.

From music notes to words: Ubhejane the rhino is fuming. A born fire-fighter, he is used to stamping out small fires with his huge feet, protecting his natural surroundings from careless humans who often leave their camping sites without extinguishing the campfires. Today he picked up the infuriating scent of black smoke from a fire in nearby Umfolozi and upon reaching the camp where the blaze is rapidly growing bigger, he storms right through it, angrily snorting while extinguishing the flames on his way. After running around in beautiful Zululand, he finally comes to rest at a waterhole where he quenches his thirst among a herd of waterbucks before wallowing in a mud pit to cool off. When the wind carries the smell of a female rhinoceros towards him, he runs off again in search of some company. On top of his back sits a small parasite bird, clinging to his thick, leathery skin and listening to the grunts, snorts and snuffs of the two white rhinos as they prepare their lunch, grasping and pulling plants from the ground..

From music notes to words: Intshe the old ostrich is in a very good mood. Walking through the South African fields surrounding Oudtshoorn, he comes across a narrow road leading to a desolated farmyard where a lot of delicious junk is waiting to be explored. He sees two ancient metal spoons and swallows it; then he gulps down an empty beer bottle, an old, broken wristwatch and a few shiny metal pieces. On his way back to the fields, he adds two round stones to his collection of strange, edible things. Feeling extremely happy after the gourmet meal, he starts moving around in a very weird way, dancing his heart out until his legs are like jelly. Every now and then he stands still for a few moments, opening and closing his wings to cool down from the heat of the exercise; then he dances again until he collapses of exhaustion, ready to take a very long nap in the hot South African sun. .

Colores de un otoño incipiente Declina el dÃa. Cobriza de hojarasca, la tierra aguarda. Inocencia Apergaminada por las largas vigilias. Frugal ante la desmesura, Se resignó a lo inconcluso Y dejó un hueco de luz en esta nada. Colors of an incipient autumn The day declines. Coppery with old leaves, the earth awaits. Innocence Parched by the long vigils. Frugal in the face of excess, He resigned himself to the unfinished And he left a hole of light in this nothingness. Such a poem alludes without great subtlety to decadence and aging. The title Apergaminada por las largas vigilias is taken from a poem by Pedro Lastra. Y dejó un hueco de luz en esta nada comes from a micropoem attributed to Alejandro Güerri, written in memory of Javier Adúriz. This seventh piece, transparent and delicate, pictures a being definitively transformed into light. The idea of desmesura (excess) arises from the prologue by Javier Adúriz to his book Solos de conciencia (1985): Faced with the excess of death, consciousness perceives the weakness of its willful affirmation, the one for which it feels itself unique and safe from all decrepitude. Adúriz was one of the fundamental figures in my artistic training. And apparently he still is. Musically, this cycle of works abounds in harmony of chords by fourths in a minimalist neoclassical aesthetic. The way of working texturally with the piano as an instrument - my instrument - highlights the pedal, the resonances, the third dimension of sound. These seven somewhat abstract pieces were composed at the end of 2019 in and around Bremen, in several cases with my new-born daughter Laura in my arms, trying to put her at to sleep and staying asleep. This explains the cautious nature of the music and its prudent dynamics that never reach a mezzoforte. There were several unsuccessful attempts to release this recording (initially planned for September 2020, at the beginning of autumn in the northern hemisphere). Finally, the album will be released (on Spotify and other streaming platforms) on 22 April 2022, coinciding with what would be my father's 103rd birthday. It is also autumn but in the southern hemisphere. Recorded on a Steinway B grand piano (serial number: 568208) at the Musikschule Bremen (Germany) with two Neumann KM-184 microphones. Recording and mastering technician: Alexander Derben. It probably comes as a surprise to many to know that Beethoven wrote variations on the current British national anthem, as well as on a jingoistic tune sung every year at the BBC Proms. But indeed he did. In 1803 he was approached by George Thomson, a civil servant living in Edinburgh who was passionate about collecting folk songs from his own country. He wanted Beethoven to compose six sonatas on Scottish melodies-a project which never materialized, but which started a business relationship that lasted until 1820. For Thomson, Beethoven completed some 150 arrangements of Scottish, Welsh and Irish folk songs (including Auld lang syne). Towards the end of 1803, he sent him these two sets of variations for piano, saying they weren’t too difficult and hoping they would have much success.Concerning the 7 Variations on ‘God save the King’, WoO78, Beethoven made the comment that he wanted to ‘show the English what a blessing they have’ with that tune. We don’t really know who wrote it, but it became very popular in 1745 when it started being sung at Drury Lane and Covent Garden to celebrate the putting-down of the Jacobite rising. It travelled over to the Continent where in 1795 it became the royal anthem of Prussia (‘Heil dir im Siegerkranz’).It makes a great theme for variations, and Beethoven has a lot of fun with it. If ever you needed proof of humour in his music, here it is. After some counterpoint in variation 1, he gives us some nimble fingerwork to deal with before an expressive minor-mode variation that can also be played a bit tongue-in-cheek. He changes metre for variation 6, a perky march, and stays in that time signature for variation 7. A lot of the difficulty of this piece depends on the tempo you choose at this point. The coda is inspired: a brief cadenza-like descent of F major broken chords leads us into a solemn return of the theme, but with some piquant and mischievous harmonies. The final allegro brings the work to a bravura conclusion.

Incidental music composed for piano in four parts by Philip Le Bas to accompany the Japanese folk tale (ghost story) Yuki-Onna (Snow Woman). This work developed out of a cross-cultural project initiated at Morley College, London, in early 2019, aiming to create a melodrama for piano solo and spoken voice to be performed in northern Japan later in the year by young students of the piano. It is based on the ghost-story above, which is widely known in Japan. The tale was transcribed and published by Lafcadio Hearn (Koizumi Yakumo) in 1904 as part of his book “Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Thingsâ€, a collection that has been highly influential in expressing popular Japanese culture over the past century. Synopsis of the tale of Yuki-Onna: Two wood-cutters, Mosaku and his apprentice Minokichi, encounter a terrible snow-storm and take shelter in an empty hut by a river. The storm gets worse and worse, but they both finally fall asleep. When Minokichi wakes, he sees a woman all in white bending over Mosaku breathing bright white smoke onto his face. She then approaches Minokichi. She is very beautiful, but her eyes make him afraid. After a while she says, “I intended to do the same to you as I did to the old man, but I feel pity for you because you are a pretty young man. If you ever tell anybody what you have seen, however, I will kill you too.†And she vanishes into the snow storm. It is then that Minokichi discovers Mosaku dead on the floor of the hut. Years later Minokichi meets a beautiful girl, who calls herself O-Yuki. He falls in love with her and they live together in his house, along with his mother, who fortunately takes a liking to her new “honourable daughter-in-law.†Over the years O-Yuki gives birth to ten children and the villagers all agree that she is a wonderful person. But she is somehow different from them, as she continues to look young and fresh, despite the passing years. Minokichi often thinks of telling O-Yuki about the events of years ago, and eventually, as he is gazing at her beauty one night, he can resist it no more. He begins to tell her about the snow storm and the terrifying snow-woman. To his horror O-Yuki becomes more and more angry, and she finally says: “It was me, it was me,… and I said I would kill you if you ever told anyone! But for these children asleep here, I would do so this very moment! You had better take very good care of them; for if ever they have reason to complain of you, I will treat you as you deserve!†As she screams at him her voice becomes thin, like the crying of the wind, and she melts into a bright white mist spiraling into the roof-beams. At that moment it starts to snow, but O-Yuki is never seen again.

Now that the story has begun, we are introduced to ‘A Squirrel Named Whiskers’! This piece is all about Whiskers, his curious nature, and the adventure he is about to set out on. The piece begins out as a timid, careful melody that slowly creeps around. Then the piece takes a turn into a vibrant and cheerful melody with a constantly moving accompaniment that reflects Whiskers’ energetic and vibrant nature.There are a some points where the melody goes off on a tangent which reflects Whiskers’ sporadic nature but he eventually returns back to his usual self. Halfway through the composition, the piece takes a turn and becomes much more active and tense. The loud dynamics as well as the foreign key reflect what Whiskers the Squirrel is known for, his curiosity to venture into dangerous and unknown places.Luckily however, he returns back to his safe and usual self which is reflected by the return of the original melody that we heard at the beginning. Like ‘Once Upon A Time’, this piece is a foreshadowing of what is to come in the rest of the album.

Darius Milhaud was NOT a member of the insider's group of Old Guard French composers, epitomized by Debussy and Ravel. Ravel had usupred Debussy's place as the pre-eminent modernist, and he rightly understood it was the duty of the next generation to rebel against his own work, and find their own ways and voices. Hence, Les Six was formed to accomplish this, just as Ravel's Les Apaches, ( not a Native American meaning, but a general reference to being musical warriors) had, by turns, admired, undermined, and then surpassed Debussy. The music here uses Milhaud's best-known contribution to modernity, bi-tonality. It takes the form of arpeggiated augmented major 7th chords played against each other: as the relationship between the chords comes to the tritone, each iteration slows down, but only to De-Emphasize the stark contrast, rather than bring it out. A second section uses mirrored, symmetrical patterns in each hand. The finale concludes with plain triads juxtaposed in a bi-tonal fashion, with the same contrary motion towards the tritone using a ritard and diminuendo. Approx. running time is 4 mins 30 secs. Easy to play, easy to read, not as easy to hear! Pedaling is fully indicated throughout. Debussy never used bi-tonality, and Ravel hinted at it a few times, but it was Milhaud's stock-in-trade.
