Piano solo as composed and performed by Kathleen Ryan on her CD Drivin‘!Kathleen’s notes: “This is a piece written by my car (my first car, the little red Toyota Tercel that considered itself to be a sports car). Back in the day, when my solo performing career was just getting off the ground, I hit the first composing dry spell of my entire life. As I am certainly not prone to exaggeration or wild mood swings, I naturally knew that never again would I compose another piece of music; and, needless to say, I found that a bit depressing.“While driving home from a gig, through the Iowa vastness, I was brooding over the loss of my fledgling career as a musician, when I noticed that my car’s odometer read 22122. I have always loved symmetric numbers! And I quickly realized that 22122 can be notes of the scale, say D-D-C-D-D. I listened to that, then saw that the odometer had turned over to 22123: D-D-C-D-E. The rest, as they say, is history. Oh, the total stops (rests) near the beginning are stop signs; you’ll find several in every midwestern town you are wishing you could speed through! I should also say (because my first car would like me to): whenever in this piece I was a bit stuck for music, all I had to do was get out on the open road and drive a bit and more music would come. Which is the other reason I say the piece was written by my car.“The music travels through a landscape that is totally unexpected, before having a mellow time in the big city that night. (Again, true to life on the road in my first car.)â€Advanced. Must be able to handle syncopation, large reaches, leaps—and perform with attitude.

He was often credited as S. Tulikov in his musical works and his cameo appearance in Russian television series. Serafim Tulikov is known for his patriotic and officially ideological compositions.In his more lyrical songs of his early career, Tulikov developed his style of heartfelt and quiet melodies. Such songs include My Love, my Life (Жизнь моÑ, любовь моÑ) (lyrics by Anton Prishelets), I Love You, my Sea (Я люблю тебÑ, море) (lyrics by Anatoly Salnikov), Above the Moscow River (Ðад МоÑквою-рекой) (lyrics by Lev Kondyrev), and Golden Altai (Ðлтай золотой) (lyrics by Tsezar Solodar). The composer also made his contribution to a subgenre of the Soviet song, the army song. He authored a song dedicated to the Soviet Pacific Fleet, Above the Bleak Kuriles Range (Ðад Ñерой КурильÑкой грÑдою) (lyrics by Nikolai Bukin), a work which combined elements of heroic devotion to the Motherland with pensiveness and longing for the far-away family and its comforts.In reflecting on the sources of inspiration for his songs, Serafim Tulikov later confessed that it came mostly from the reminiscences of his homeland, Kaluga, and most of the elements within the songs were present in Kaluga. In the early 1960s, Tulikov would write a song dedicated to Kaluga, properly entitled The Town of My Youth (Город юноÑти моей) (lyrics by Mikhail Pliatskovsky), a sweet and unassuming yet sincere and heartfelt song.During Khrushchev's Virgin Lands Campaign of bringing the vast steppes of Kazakhstan and South Siberia into agricultural use, Tulikov composed another well known song, Komsomol Direction (КомÑомольÑÐºÐ°Ñ Ð¿ÑƒÑ‚ÐµÐ²ÐºÐ°) (lyrics by Tsezar Solodar), which declared: On the go!
