This advanced work is the first of a collection of Fantasies or miniature tone poems for piano . The piece is in three sections and has numerous influences, some Impressionistic, some Romantic and it always is difficult to try and fuse these styles while keeping them congruent. The shimmering opening portrays a fairie being chased by something or someone, which seems to gets closer and closer to her. This section ends with a series of dominant seventh/nine chords and a rallentando. The slower middle segment introduces a new melody and is where she is able to hide and catch her breath which then segues (via an accelerando) leading to her discovery and the chase resumes until her escape at the very end (I hope). The challenging left hand is the main engine for the melody, which is stated in the first measure and is presented again and again in different keys and accompaniment styles. The arpeggiated figures are influences of Ravel and Liszt but I tried to imbue it with a sense of delicacy even in some of the more powerful moments. This produces a light, which I imagine would coruscate in the evening forest. This work is appropriate for all pianist. Healing Hearts is the fourth solo piano release from Louis Landon in less than two years, an indication that his 2013 move to Sedona, AZ sparked an amazing creative streak for him. Since his move, Landon has established Healing Piano of Sedona which offers a unique sound healing experience to create mental, physical and emotional well-being. Landon is a Steinway Artist who has toured internationally and has released seventeen albums, eleven of which are solo piano (one is a best of). He has been using the techniques of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky for spiritual development since 1980. Healing Piano of Sedona was created to help people live life joyously, passionately, stress- and disease-free.The thirteen tracks on Healing Hearts were created spontaneously to assist individuals in their emotional and spiritual well-being. I have to admit that in the past, I have had a strong preference for Landon’s more composed music, but he is improvising and performing so much now that his spontaneous music is incredibly cohesive and complete and the emotional content is rich and sincere. Landon has performed house concerts in my series every year for the past seven years and while his music has always been exceptionally good, now it’s often breathtaking in its beauty and honesty. Nothing is held back, coming from the purest source of creativity. I’m blown away by the music on Healing Hearts and am certain that it will be the second of Landon’s albums on my Favorites list for 2014.Most of the tracks overflow with peace and serenity. In fact, Louis calls his home studio The Peace Palace and I can see why! A couple of pieces are a bit livelier, but the entire album is perfect for a warm and soothing background. However, be sure to treat your mind and soul to a blissful hour of calming music that can effortlessly heal the spirit and wash away the cares of the moment, the day, or life in general - at least for a while. All of the tracks are exceptional, but I’ll mention a few favorites. Amy’s Song is a breath of fresh air - graceful, tender and very warm. Gorgeous! Desert Peace is somewhat more ambient and so peaceful. I love the title track, which is more minor and a bit darker, but so poignant and compelling. Now or Never seems to be offering support and encouragement to move forward - gently but firmly. Sacred is almost hymn-like. The Great Unknown is dedicated to a young family member who passed away recently. Dark and sometimes painfully sad, there is hope as the healing process takes place - an amazing piece of music! The Painter expresses the passionate spirit that can flow from one artist to another. Unstoppable begins quietly and simply, gradually building energy, strength and power. Unstoppable, indeed! A great, upbeat ending to a fantastic album!Healing Hearts is a must-hear! It is available from louislandon.com, Amazon, iTunes, and CD Baby. Very highly recommended!

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. A caveat: I have no delusions, and offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy and comfort to other technically challenged yet serviceable pianists such as myself. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Breathe on Me, Breath of God, Blest Be the Tie That Binds, and More Love to Thee, O Christ.

Unison hands setup up the the spark with bits of  counterpoint and harmony dropping in to push the flame higher until it takes off in a fury of flame. Zooming out to a milder, wider perspective (think distant grass fire) the music next recedes to a comforting (if still hotly busy) fireplace. But before complacency set ins, the real fireworks start with a virtuosic but very playable conclusion ending in a furious burst. Composer’s comments:Fire is part of the Elements Suite and recording created during a visit to the Pacific Northwest, where the natural world exhibits an unusual intensity and the elements are quite prominently display. With this music I hope to capture the contrasts between the four elements as well as the dual natures within each of them.  Water, for example, is both a source of life and potentially dangerous.  Air is both breath and wind.  Fire comforts or burns.  Only Earth seemed to me continuous and dependable.
