From the very beginning of the intro there is a feeling of an almost trance-like state as the right hand plays a simple, yet haunting figure with very little motion under a sustained, sighing melody. When the main theme begins, the left hand takes up the pulsating figure and the right begins its melancholic rise and fall. The chromatic nature of the piece lends an aura of wandering through the world of sleep, looking with fascination at the unusual sights conjured up by the unconscious mind. Is there a hidden meaning to what we see or simply our imagination taking us on a journey to a fantastic world of untold wonders?

If I neglect to close the piano lid, I’ll sometimes hear them walk across the piano keys in the middle of the night, waking up the house with dissonant clusters of notes going high to low, or low to high- this was the initial inspiration for these three pieces for piano about cats.Birds at the Window - We have hung our birdfeeder outside our window. The windowsill is a favorite spot for the kitties to relax and stretch in the sun. When the birds come to feed, the cats bristle with excitement as they chatter and swat at the window. The birds seem to know they are safe and fly around freely.Kitty’s Dream - Housecats spend most of their life sleeping or dozing. I’ve read that cats do dream. I wonder what they dream of.The Laser Pointer - The kitties seem to know that we are teasing them with the laser pointer, but they can’t fight the instinct to chase it. They feign disinterest, hoping to catch the dot off guard. In a flash they leap for the dot, skidding wildly. Of course, they never catch it. I almost feel bad for laughing. Eventually, they will become frustrated and disgusted with this game and slink away.-Michael Close.

Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 1732 in a small village in Austria, near the Hungarian border. ♫ His father was a wheelwright and a leader of the town. His mother had been a cook in the palace of a Count. His father had taught himself to play the harp. His family was musical and often sang together (16 brothers and sisters). His father saw that he was extremely musical and that he couldn’t get the education he needed in his little village. When he was 6 years old, he was sent to the home of a relative about 7 miles away to study to be a musician. He never lived with his parents again. ♫ In 1752 he was employed by Count Karl Joseph Morzin, leading the Count’s small orchestra and writing the first of his symphonies. ♫ In 1760 he married Maria Keller. They had a very unhappy marriage, producing no children. ♫ In 1760 Count Paul Andre Esterhazy (one of the wealthiest and most important nobles in the Austrian empire) hired him as assistant director of music. In 1766 at the age of 34, Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy appointed Haydn his Director of Music. His job was divided between the Esterhazy palace in Austria their palace across the border Hungary. ♫ Haydn dedicated Piano Sonata 40 to Princess Marie Esterhazy. He worked for the Esterhazys for the next 28 years, writing hundreds of pieces of music for the prince. After about 15 years, he signed a new contract allowing him to write music for other customers. Haydn’s reputation grew to international fame. ♫ Haydn wrote 104 Symphonies. Not unlike George Washington, nicknamed the “Father of our Countryâ€, yet had no children, Haydn is known as the “Father of the Symphony.†♫ Napoleon captured Vienna in 1809. Napoleon, himself, ordered an honor guard be placed at Haydn’s home where Haydn lay dying. ♫ The Classical Music for Tablet Series offers piano masterworks by classical composers formatted to be read on 10 inch tablets. I got the idea for the piece after having composed for 2 hours and finding my stomach screaming from hunger, my throat screaming from thirst, my head screaming from fatigue, and my mind screaming from unsatisfied work. It was a very overwhelming feeling at once and caused me to come up with the idea for the piece and subject for the fugue. The prelude is supposed to be setting up the fugue, as it depicts multiple voices getting along but just barely. The C major section shows the initial clarity from satisfying one of their needs, but it quickly returns to a struggle. The fugue slowly and slowly gets more intense, leading up until the end when the main character becomes completely overwhelmed.

Marie. As you would expect, much of the music represents water, but it also captures moments during their flight. Loud dissonant chords mark Mr. Couture’s death and Wabegiah’s grief. The unsettling fear motive in Locrian mode predominates as they begin to flee. As they head away from danger, the courage theme follows them downstream. In a dissonant conversation with an Ojibwe man on the Brule River, he refused to give the hungry travelers food, but told them to continue to the river’s mouth to find Wabegiah’s aunt and uncle. The restful and nourishing family time on the shores of Lake Superior allows for variations on the family theme, playful, sleepy, and reflecting on the coming of autumn. With the courage theme as the subject, a fugue tracks their difficult passage across Lake Superior to the safety of Sault Ste. Marie. Recounted by Eliza Morrison, a daughter from Wabegiah’s second marriage, this journey took place in the early 1830s. The three children were born in 1828, 1829, and 1830. The youngest of the children was Angelique, the composer’s great great grandmother.

This mashup resulted from the fact that I often confuse and conflate these two tunes, as they're similar in sound and feel.The setting is cheerful and active, accompanied by running eighth notes, with a calm center section. Harmonies feature lots of 4ths and 5ths, maintaining the American folk style.

His virtuosity as a performer led him to compose piano works that make extreme demands on the player. One really cool technique he used begins with a rolling arpeggio over two octaves that is passed from hand to hand. After that groove is set up, a melody enters above the arpeggios. The notes of the melody are played by whichever hand isn’t busy at the moment, usually by the left and right hand alternately. This means that half the melody notes are played by the left hand quickly crossing over the right. It can sound to the listener as though the pianist has three hands!I’ve always liked playing pieces that make use of this mechanic, so I decided to write one of my own. It's challenging, but a lot of fun to play.
