My arrangement takes it from a 60's pop song to a gentle jazz ballad. It is totally reharmonized and has a fresh new feel. The melody is the same, except it has a new Time Signature. The song was originally in 6/8 but I have set it in 1/2 in order to get the pulse and phrasing I want. (Yes, 1 minim/half note per bar.) The original accompaniment was broken arpeggios, but now it is all about the rich new blocked chords. With repeats and a D.S. I have covered all 4 verses and bridges. About the arrangement This is pianist/arranger Thomas Gunther's beautiful and highly accurate piano solo arrangement of the 2023 Barbie Movie features Billie Eilish's song WHAT I WAS MADE FOR.  It includes even Billie's quiet humming passages.This solo piano version can be played all by itself, or with Billie's recording of the song.It is easy enough to learn for pianists that have no amazing techniqual skills, but can be challanging in different ways, as explained below. From the Arranger Thomas Gunther  The most challenging task when writing this solo piano arrangement of What I Was Made For was to notate Billie's rhythm accurately. Her melodic rhythm is very important as it supports the flow of the lyrics perfectly. Notating a singer's rhythm can unfortunately never be 100% perfect (notation is by definition quantized), but I think I got very close. An other challenge was to get the accompaniment sound like the original without stepping on the melody notes. Looking at my final version I think it is as good as it gets for a piano adaption of this highly emotional song.I really hope all you Billie Eilish fans out there will enjoy playing this arrangement! How difficult is it As mentioned earlier, the song looks simple, but to play it well there is a lot of things the pianist has to take care of. The most challenging aspect is to sustain some notes by either using clever fingering or employing the sustain pedal. Also, dynamics are really important, especially when ballancing the accompaniment against the melody. Fingering I included fingering numbers to give the pianist a starting point. But fingering is a highly subjective affaire. Every pianist should feel free to adapt her/his own fingering as see fit. Sustain pedal usage The sustain pedal usage is very important in this arrangement (I included sustain pedal markings for this very reason). For one, it helps sustaining some notes that can't be held otherwise, and of course to make the sound fuller (more cinematic). It is important to use the pedal to create a sense of space (distance). After all, the original recording uses a lot of reverb to achieve that. Chord Symbols I did not include pop chord symbols because the harmony to the the song is very simple and based around 4 diatonic chords. It would just cludder up the score. On the keys, there are two different types of numbers. The regular numbers, like 1 2 3 4 5, are for the right hand. The numbers with the circles, like 1 2 3 4 5, are for the left hand. (Sorry, sheetmusicplus don't have font for this) On the blank keys, you can write down the finger numbers. This is good for the students learning songs at different positions. Like G position, F position, etc. The paper key might have a slightly difference on the key size. It is because different manufacture have their own different key sized width. This paper keys should fit most keyboards or piano. This paper keyboard can help piano beginners start lessons and helps make practice easier. However, it is NOT RECOMMENDED for long term use. How to Print This pdf is designed for two sided (duplex) printers. Both sides on the same paper supposed to be in up side down format. Make sure you enable the two sided print function. You should be able to have a paper scale for three octaves on both sides. If you used duplex printing and your printer didn’t line up the scales, please use hand feed. Because every printers have different settings. You just need to try it in a different ways a couple times. Materials: I used the card stock from Sam’s club. It is 110lb greeting card paper. It is the cheapest one on the market. It cost $7.98 for 275 sheets. All of the papers are laminated.

A Week in November… and what a week it was! It was the week of the US Presidential Election 2020. As I write these words, the absurdist tantrums of the Trump-Pence campaign versus the reasoned compassion of team Biden-Harris continues even well after the results have been called in the Democrats’ favour. There will not be the usual respectful concession speech and transition of power. I worry every day about how these next few months will be so very difficult, maybe even dangerous, for my American friends. Those convoys of flag waving Trumpists gleefully, openly, encouraged by their ‘leader’, attempting to block the democratic process was horrifying to witness. Was America on the brink of civil war? It still doesn’t seem far fetched to think that as I sit in my studio on the other side of the world, feeling helpless. The only thing I felt that I could do for my friends over there was to offer them a way to feel safe and loved in the moment, a bit of musical mindfulness. It was in this spirit that I wrote the second movement of this work, subtitled A Pocket Full of Calm. My excellent pianist friends Erica Sipes (USA) and Sandra Mogensen (Canada) adopted my little tune, recorded it on their social media to share said moment in the moment as it were. I hope it helped. I mean, if I can bring to even just one person some sense of calm solidarity, I’m happy with that. The fifth movement in the set, Victorious, resolute, but gracious, was a stream-of-consciousness creative response to the Biden Harris victory and the way they handled it so eloquently, so humbly, how they gave the world a sense of optimism once more. For a long while, I’d felt that I probably wouldn’t be welcome in America. As a mixed race, queer woman I was the antithesis of everything they valued. But now, people like me over there can feel human again. The relief! As for the other days of that week in November, they are part of a continuing series of daily composition exercises I started back in October in an effort to end a lengthy period of pandemic-induced creative block. Using a combination of exercises from Music Composition Toolbox (Barbeler/Blom/Hindson) and Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies I’ve been able to find my creativity again. Butterfly: a solo piano work from the album Shadows (2013) This piece was created for a therapist friend for 'Serenity', a 1 hour album of relaxing solo piano music. The piece was then rerecorded for the Shadows album shortly afterwards. It's strange how well certain tracks 'perform' on certain platforms; Butterfly currently has just over 187K plays on Soundcloud, outperforming all of my other work by about 500%! The other 'fun fact' is that I opened it up to the Facebook community to title this piece, so I can't take credit for that part. It also became the 'soundtrack' to a wonderful short film by Eirini Xyda-Kouka in 2016, so it's had quite a journey.

This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

Everybody Deserves Somebody to Love is a musical story in which two characters, who work together, are at a joyful party, with lots of dancing and drinking. Both are in love with each other but social, family, and professional issues prevent them from getting together. However, one of the characters absorbed by the joy of the party (too much to drink, maybe) decides to insist in the relationship. The other character is hesitant and afraid to face such challenge. At the end of the song they decide to take the chance. The piece is structured in a rondó form with the following parts that I called: Introduction (I); A; B; C; I; A; D; A; C; I; A. Imagine a rock and habanera cake with Scarlatti syrup. The layers are: A: An invitation. They say phrases like: “Come to me because I need you nowâ€. B: Expression of pure desire with phrases such as: Hey! I can Ìt control myself now. B could be called A’. C: In a syncopated rhythm is argumentation. One party is trying to convince the other about assuming their relationship singing like that: “Everybody deserves somebody to love. I can help you to carry on. Just give your life a second chanceâ€. D: Is a moment of reflection. One of the characters is at greater risk and says: I´m afraid, love hurts sometimes. It won´t be so easy to start a new life now.â€.

There’s a funny little story with how I wrote this piece. I’ve got these dice called ‘Rory’s Story Cubes’ which have little pictures on them and they’re meant to be an ice breaker where you roll the dice and come up with a story based on the images that come up. Anyway, I thought of using them to help me come up with an idea for a new composition. So I rolled some of the dice and there was a picture of a fire, a house, and someone running - something like that, I can’t remember exactly what the pictures were. Then that prompted me to write this composition: ‘Fire in the House’. It was a great way to try something new and write something that I never would have thought to write if it were not for those dice.Through the piece I have written little annotations to explain what is happening in the story of the piece of music and the scene I was trying to reflect in the music. It was a fun little piece to write and I really enjoyed using the dice to come up with a story for me to write about - I should definitely do it more often to try something new and get out of my comfort zone. I highly recommend you pick some up one day if you write music too - they’re a great tool to have!
