Rhapsody – Wind of the Sea By Brendan Reeves This piece, Rhapsody – Wind of the Sea, takes the listener on a melodic ride over the waves and winds of the ocean. The piece is grounded in an E major 7th chord which, despite being a 7th chord, serves tonic function throughout the piece. The piece begins with several arpeggios in moderato, which are meant to symbolize rolling waves. Much like waves, they are not in perfect time. The piece is very felt and performed with passion rather than strict attention to meter. Dynamic is the primary focus. The melody is presented three times in the beginning of the piece, after which the dream sequence begins. The dream sequence is characterized by stanzas differentiated by dynamic marking. This crescendos into the next section symbolizing the wind on the sea, beginning on Measure 53. The transition is from a previously stable tonic E major 7th chord. With the naturalization of the D, it becomes an E dominant 7th chord and becomes the V7 chord of A major (Secondary Dominant). In an instant flourishing A lydian scale, the listener is taken into a new melodic world in A lydian. The piece then diminishes back down into the waves of the dream pattern at measure 70. The piece finishes off tempo with one last final, symbolic, arpeggio; a calm after the tempest.

My Variations on the hymn tune Gordon (My Jesus, I Love Thee) are intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. The four variations in this set display increasing rhythmic complexity as one plays them from beginning to end, ranging from continuous streams of eighth notes to eighth-note triplets to sixteenths. The first, and simplest, variation can be played alone. Variations 2-4 are written as a continuous group, though they too can be played individually if desired, by adding a conclusive tonic note in the bass. For the most part the pitches of the hymn tune are presented without ornamentation, though there are occasional exceptions. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

This Toccata is part of the NUMES collection, consisting of 7 works about 15 Hellenic deities. Toccata: Thea Glaukopis Athena. The NUMES collection contains: * Sonatina * Sonata * Toccata * Intermezzo * Postlude * Quatro Cânticos sem Palavras [Four Canticles without Words] * Fantasia. The scores are elegantly and accurately typed. The notation, from the positioning of the notes, passing through the direction of the stems, and reaching legatos that do not cross staves and barlines, seeks to be clear and intuitive. The form is evidenced by the bar numbering placed at the beginning of the main phrases. And the use of double barlines is restricted to section changes, not tonal changes, as in older notations. Dynamics are not structuring and therefore are not prefixed. And each score is preceded by an epigraph that situates the general character of the music, whose tempo is indicated by the name of the Divinity.

The first in a series of solo piano works inspired by scenes from literature, The Infernal Whirlwind is both a representation of and reaction to Canto V in Dante's Inferno. Dante and his guide Virgil enter the second level of Hell, where the souls of people who gave into lust are condemned. At first Dante hears but a faint sound of commotion, but upon fully entering the level he encounters a massive tempest of souls being buffeted about. He recognizes some famous figures here and there. Eventually, his attention is drawn to two figures, the primary one being Francesca da Rimini. She tells of how, after reading of Sir Lancelot, she and her brother-in-law allowed themselves to love each other. Dante, deeply moved by the pathos of Francesca's story and disturbed by the continuous whirlwind, faints.Composers such as Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky have been inspired by Francesca da Rimini specifically, but The Infernal Whirlwind is more concerned with what the whirlwind itself represents: the control lust and desire held on these souls, both while living and in the afterlife. The central theme is a twelve-tone row, but the work is not truly serialist in construction or conception: It rather represents the winding, ranging, unsettled nature of passion itself, and of the whirlwind.The piece lasts about 5 minutes, and is for an advanced player. In the beginning it requires use of all three pedals (una corda, sostenuto, sustain). Perhaps the main influence is Liszt, and one could find useful a Lisztian approach to performance. .

Music NotesThis is a piece I wrote to shape some concepts for my first/second year pianostudent daughter. I had the idea while listening to her practice by brute force –meaning the keys are repeated hit continuously at same tempo, same strength – almost as a pounding exercise. I thought nuance was not getting into her playing yet (as with most beginning students).  I wanted her to be aware of the musicality innate in a piece of music.Therefore, I loaded this piece up with all kinds of tempo changes, dynamics, etc. A little overkill, but printed music does suggest these things although it might not be written in.Concepts I was going for: Form: In this case a Rondo. Using classic ABACA. Key Relationships: C Major / A Minor. Sections B and C are in A minor, although written in key of C with the addition of sharps (leading tone G ♯). Hand Independence: Scales in one hand punctuated in the other. Scales: Scales found in both hands and the value of scales fingering in a real piece. Phrasing: How different notes are placed together to make a complete thought. Dynamics: Lots of changes written in there and how it relates to phrasing helping make the ‘complete thought.’ Articulation: Staccato vs Legato, voices opposing each other; again helping with the ‘complete thought.’ Tempo: That such a thing as flexible tempo helps with phrasing and completing that ‘complete thought’ we talked about. Pounding beat vs a larger beat: as interpretation such as dance (emphasizing the first beat instead of pounding by each beat. Notice by the tempo markings that a larger beat is called for by the markings (one beat per measure embracing the dance aspect.) Her former teacher is very talented, holds his Doctor's degree in Piano Performance and was absolutely terrific with her. That being said, Kara soon found out there were boys, and from that moment on the instructor never had a chance. She’s 38 now, loves to play this piece and still -- pounds it out. ☺.

A rather large cat attempts to hunt a wily mouse. The mouse tries to escape the cat’s clutches. Who succeeds?This piece’s ternary form follows the chase between a cat and mouse. Section A is lively and fast-paced because the cat is on the hunt for the mouse. Since this piece is written from the mouse’s perspective, C-sharp minor conveys the mouse’s fright and fear. The time signature is 4/4 to allow for 16th notes, which denote running steps. The theme in m.19 repeats several times throughout Section A to signify the large cat’s ominous stalking. Tenutos and staccatos punctuate the cat’s heavy steps. In m.14-15, the chromatic scale represents the cat’s momentum. The constantly changing dynamics showcase the various movements and emotions in a chase. Specifically, in m.28-31, the dynamic changes to piano and pedal is employed to signify the mouse’s despair. Section B stands alone, representing the mouse’s successful escape from the cat. The section’s key signature D-flat major is light and happy. A time signature of 6/8 swings, furthering the carefree mood of the mouse. The beginning of Section B repeats to emphasize the mouse’s joyous escape. However, at the end of the section, the cat returns. In m.61-68, varying speeds and descriptors contrast the movements of the cat and mouse. In m.68, the cat’s theme is an octave lower to draw attention to the cat’s threatening, heavy steps. In m.70-71, the notes accelerate to show that the mouse begins to run again. Section A’s refrain recaps the cat chasing the mouse. In m.89-100, the end, tells the mouse’s fate. The climatic ending is highlighted by the speeding tempo. The treble-clef notes are an octave higher to build excitement. In m.95-96, notes descend 4 octaves to indicate the mouse’s ultimate demise. The piece ends with grand chords to mark the mouse’s death.

Program Notes: At the Edge of the Body’s Night (2008) for piano and digital acoustics is a setting of Seven Poems by the late poet, Mark Strand. These poems intrigued me with their potent brevity and mysterious symbolism. I found in their riddle-like form a concise emotional message, ideal for creating short melodic themes and inspiring fantastic piano music. When I recorded Mark’s voice reading the poems, I knew that his recitation would be part of the compositional resources for the piece. His resonant voice, enhanced by the audio editing process, provided a powerful context for the musical interpretation of his words. The addition of a soprano voice (Ashley Parker) in the digital landscape alludes to the traditional art song setting of poems. and her siren-call voice recalls the female muse that I imagined inspired the poet in writing his words. The piano music guides the listener throughout this fantastic journey of sound and music reflecting on the meaning and character of the poems and driving the dream-like narrative forward. Performance of the digital acoustic: Each of the six movements (I & II are combined) for piano are accompanied by a digital audio landscape as part of the performance. At the beginning of each section, a cue is notated in the score to start the audio wave file. It is recommended that a high fidelity audio play back system be employed in the recital hall or performance space. The sound system could be interfaced with a laptop computer or iPad operated by the pianist using a foot pedal similarly used with iPads supporting a digital part or it could be executed during the performance by a technician. The rental of the digital acoustic files includes a Key File license from Qlab that TheComposerStudio will email to be uploaded to a PC or Mac laptop computer for the duration of the rental. The uploaded software will ensure that the files are executed during a performance with ease and accuracy. The idea for the beginning motif came when I was simply at a piano and began playing around with chords based on quintal harmonies, chords built off of perfect fifths instead of the usual major or minor third. When I wrote this piece, I thought of a scene in which a pair of beings, one with a masculine energy and the other feminine, were dancing quite literally in the clouds. In the B section, the pair holds one another tightly as they share memories of one another, some fond and some bittersweet, before returning to their waltz. In the D section, the feminine being goes her own way and dances solo with a sense of vigor and raw passion. She goes a little too hard and trips, falling on the ground. The masculine being comes to her aid and gets her back on her feet, returning to their waltz once more. By the end, the sun sets and they part ways, sharing a tender embrace and a kiss goodbye.

The beginning of the play, however, presents itself childish and naïve, as a child walking in a indolent way and ended up reminding me of video game or cartoon songs and a period of childhood between 8 and 10 years. I then structured the piece to show some pleasures of childhood: walking, running, flying, playing, swimming and dancing. Most of the images selected for this movie in youtube (https://youtu.be/BTZwwt8wYb0) represent what I wanted to express through my sound choices. For those who enjoy analyzing musical structures a short summary follows: The piece begins with the exposition of a rhythmic theme in B flat minor, followed by a small melodic theme constructed through the same motif presented at the beginning of the piece, but in D flat major. The piece then moves towards a moment of transition, a bridge between B flat minor and B minor. This transition is not only modulation, it is a transformation of the rhythmic aura to a melodic (B minor) episode . This episode is presented as a song A, B, with small variations. After the melodic episode, another moment of transition begins to return to the tonic (B flat minor) for reexposition of the rhythmic theme, but with another outfit. The piece then ends with a delicious codetta full of tenderness.

The song was written by Paul Simon over several months in 1963 and 1964. A studio audition led to the duo signing a record deal with Columbia Records, and the original 'acoustic' version of the song was recorded in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City and included on their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.. Released on October 19, 1964,[2] the album was a commercial failure and led to the duo disbanding; Simon returned to England, and Art Garfunkel to his studies at Columbia University. In 1965, the song began to attract airplay at radio stations in Boston, Massachusetts, and throughout Florida. The growing airplay led Tom Wilson, the song's producer, to remix the track, overdubbing electric instruments and drums. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965. This is an original classical/modern composition for solo piano. It starts with an E Phrygian slow, creepy main theme followed by a fast, stormy theme in A minor. This is then followed by a calmer but still energetic development section that goes dramatically from A minor to D major to D dorian. The fast stormy theme in A minor comes back again one last time, and a shortened version of the beginning slow main theme comes back again in A minor and as a violently, loud coda. This composition could potentially be used for movies. One idea is the opening slow theme could potentially be used when two armies come to meet eacch other at a battlefield and the rest of thhe piece could be used when the battle is raging. This piece could also be used by intermediate or advanced pianists to play at recitals or concerts or for their own personal enjoyment or study. This piece is great for teaching students good hand-eye coordination.

I was suprised I could still do it and I've kept composing ever since. The tune sounds vaguely classical and has a number of trills in the melody which add something. The harmony is a little jazzy in places so it's a bit of a mixed genre. I felt it would make an excellent theme tune for some film or programme. It goes in key from A major at the beginning to C major at the end with a touch of minor along the way. I don't notate dynamics, fingering and pedals as I prefer to leave this up to the individual pianist and no two teacher ever agree on these subjects. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did writing and arranging it.

Tune: HYMN TO JOYUse: PreludeHymn to Joy is the main theme of the last movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most famous work, his Ninth Symphony, which premiered in 1824, only three years before his death. The tune has been paired with several different hymn texts, but the most popular one in most churches is Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.Just six years later, around 1830, a young Polish composer living in Paris, Frédéric Chopin, composed his most famous work, the Nocturne in E-flat major. It’s a piece that’s beloved by pianists for its lovely melody set over a widely spaced accompaniment. The tune gets considerably more complex as it goes on.My setting goes through the melody three times. The first and third sections are fast, and are built on a kind of arpeggio-pattern-with-a-melody-on-top that Chopin was fond of using. The slow section in the middle starts with a total ripoff of the opening of Chopin’s Nocturne; it’s even in the same key! Instead of Chopin’s melody, though, I use Beethoven’s, and develop the tune as Chopin did, beginning plainly, then becoming increasingly ornate.This piece was a blast to write, and I hope you enjoy it, too.
