Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1149455). In a Foreign Land is a piano solo arrangement of the 1905 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. I have simplified the piece with much of it now 2 part (single notes in each hand) with some occasional 2 note chords. In the opening section I reharmonize the melody with simple folk style chords, then in the second section I return to the original syncopated broken chords. Simple and playful, it is a fun piece to play. 2 page score; 2:20 minutes This piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

This piece is a part of Schumann's Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood) suite. It explores themes of the unfamiliar and a child's curiosity of the world.  Von fremden Ländern und Menschen utilizes a lyrical ABA form set in an ABA ternary meter. The opening melody is soft, nostalgic, and reflective representing the innocence of childhood. Joshua Bickford #753620. Published by Joshua Bickford (A0.1153365). This is a piano sonata based on the Christmas Carol, We Three Kings. In movement one, the original carol melody is changed to half notes and is turned into a three voice canon. The overall effect of movement one is the feeling of three mystics and their camels journeying in a foreign land. At the very end of movement one is one exact phrase from the original piece. In movement two, the melody is used in retrograde to create new melodic material. It is a slow movement. To me, it is reminiscent of the music of Satie or Chopin. In movement three, the new melodic material is created by taking the original melody and inverting it. In the development section, phrases from the original melody do appear. The last two measures also contain an exact quote from the original melody. It is an upbeat, fast paced movement.

First published in 1998, the Rhapsody is based on 3 Israeli songs: a folk song, EL YIVNE HAGALIL; a Ladino song of the Sephardic Jewish tradition, HITRAGUT; and Israel's national anthem, HATIKVA. The composer had performed the piece in concerts all over the world. He also recorded the Rhapsody onto a CD and a DVD and it can be heard and watched on YouTube - http://youtu.be/w3j3bGOyy6M . Rami Bar-Niv is one of Israel's most acclaimed and sought after pianists. He travels extensively and has become an international citizen, concertizing all over the world. Born in Tel-Aviv in December 1945, Bar-Niv graduated with honors from the Rubin Academy of Music, and was the recipient of various prizes and scholarships. After graduating from the Mannes College of Music in New York, where he studied with the renowned Mme. Nadia Reisenberg, he won numerous competitions, and embarked on a successful concert career. He is heard regularly in North, Central, and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Israel, where he received the Best Performer Award from the Israeli government. Rami Bar-Niv performs as a soloist with orchestras, as a recitalist, and as a chamber musician. He appears in live concerts, on radio, and on television, and is always received with great enthusiasm. Often sent abroad by the Foreign Ministry to represent Israel in concerts, he has become an ambassador of goodwill for Israel. Bar-Niv made history by being the first, and so far the only, Israeli artist to perform in Egypt following the Begin/Sadat Peace Treaty. His recordings for CBS and other labels in Israel and abroad have met with praise and popularity. His compositions are published, recorded, and performed all over the world. He has often been at the top of the charts on various Internet music sites such as MP3.com, YouTube, and many others. Along with his concerts, he has been teaching all over the world, giving master classes, lectures, workshops, and private lessons. In 1959, Germaine Tailleferre wrote incidental music for a radio drama based on Philippe Jullian’s « Mémoire d’une bergère » or « Autobiography of an armchair » which traced the owners of this armchair from the court of Louis XV to England after the French Revolution, back to Paris and through the hands of various foreign owners (Arabian, American, German etc.). In illustrating this story Tailleferre used her great knowledge of musical styles to evoke these different settings, from the classical styles of French music of the XVIIIth century to classical, romantic, popular French styles as well as two evocations of American Blues/Ragtime music. These short pieces are interesting in and of themselves, in addition to illustrating Jullian’s story. The first piece may be repeated at the end, as it was in the original radio drama.
