Full scoreProgram note:In the late spring of 2024 I read a review in BBC Music Magazine of an ECM recording from 1994 of Keith Jarrett playing the CPE Bach Württemberg Sonatas. I am a long time fan of CPE Bach's music. But I have confess that the Württemberg Sonatas never did much for me. Maybe it's because all the previous albums of the work were recorded on the harpsichord, which I hate. But, when I heard Keith Jarrett do these sonatas on a Steinway grand, I was blown away!!! So blown away was I that I immediately wanted to do my own version of these great works by CPE. I am calling my work, after John Cage, Sonatas and Interludes. I was very taken by Ferruccio Busoni’s transcription of J.S. Bach’s Chorale Preludes for organ. I am not familiar with the original version mainly because I don’t enjoy listening to organ music; except when it is in a jazz context, like Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco.Using Busoni’s version as a model I re-did all nine of his Bach Chorale Preludes in my fashion and then I realized that I needed three more to make a nice simple dozen. I am a Singaporean pianist and composer. I have studied the piano since 5 years old under Mr Joseph Toh and I graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a Diploma in Music in 2013, majoring in Music Composition under Malaysian composer Mr Chong Kee Yong and Singaporean composer Mrs Joyce Koh Bee Tuan. About Piano Sonata I started working on my Piano Sonata in 2013 and completed in 2020. 1st movement (Allegretto): This movement is based on the chromatic and whole tone scales. The agitato sections should be played in an even manner and if possible, Presto. Use the pedal sparingly. 2nd movement (Largo e espressivo): This movement is in a romantic setting. Make sure to bring out the melody in the slow sections (2 outer ones) and pianist should judge which voicing is the main melody in the middle section. Take your time to play the last 2 measures of this movement, and end off with a very silent trill. 3rd movement (Vivo): This Rondo is Toccata-like, and performer again should use the pedal sparingly. Piano Sonata is dedicated to my friends Mr James Oh Ju Young and Mr Matthias Oh.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.1082546). Chick Corea died at the age of 69 on February 9, 2021. I have been a huge fan of his music and piano playing since I heard the album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968). Assisted by Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, Chick was in absolutely rare form on that seminal recording!!! As a tribute to him and a in memoriam to his musicianship, I wrote these movements for solo piano inspired by his compositions in the album Children's Songs (1984). Corea's Children's Songs is a suite of twenty solo piano pieces, each lasting between 1 to 2 minutes. These are truly little gems of composition in miniature, like the Chopin Preludes. But every time I hear them I always felt that these nice little pieces, at least to my ears, always came up short. A lot of them seem to end in mid-air. In my humble opinion, they needed development. But that is of course coming from the mouth of a classical composer, me. LOL!!! Nevertheless, in this tribute, I have taken some ideas from the original Corea songs and reinvented them in my own fashion. You will detect a thing or two from Chick, but mostly it's TOL music. Since my songs get development, the entire suite consists of ten movements, rather than Corea's twenty. Enjoy!!! Children's Song No. 1 ... Moderato Children's Song No. 2 ... Program note: Last summer I wrote Préludes … Hommage à C.D. All 12 movements were inspired by Debussy’s Book I of the same title. I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would eventually do Book II as well. As I got around to it I discovered that Book II did not resonate with me as did Book I. So, I went looking at the many, many other solo piano works by C.D. and I came across his Six Épigraphes Antique which engaged me tremendously. As I did with Book I, I took initial elements of Debussy’s music and then took off in my own direction from the original. The original six épigraphes has a duration of 15.5 minutes. That is too short for me. So I added two more pieces from Debussy’s works: Poisson d’or and the famous Réverie. It is now ca. 26 minutes in duration. I. Pour Pan, dieu du vent d’été … Moderato II. Pour un tombeau sans nom … Adagio III. Pour que la nuit soit propice … Allegro IV. Pour la danseuse aux crotales … Adagio V. Poisson d’or … Moderato VI. Pour Cléopâtre, l’Égyptienne … Largo VII. Pour remercier la pluie du matin … Presto, TRIO VIII. Réverie … Adagio Enjoy!!!
