Parts of a world lost forever but treasured in the adult soul.From First Day, First Page of the diary and Sunday’s Joybells to the Bittersweet morning dances and the Calm of a Sunny Afternoon, from A Sudden Absence and a Strange Question to the Loneliness and Dream, from the imaginary Indian Dance to the Walkin’ on a Rainy Day and from March of the Goose to the Flowers’ Waltz, Lullaby and Farewell Song, these Diary of a Child pages unfold the thread of a very well known memory, a memory of us all.These 30 short piano pieces were composed between 2003 and 2007. Some of them are compositions of inspired children, composer’s pupils, like Orsaki Roussetou and Plato Tsoukatos-Pontikis.This collection is dedicated to all composer’s pupils and especially toy Nikos Karidis, the grown up child who gave me the opportunity to write most of the pieces presented. The work was recorded by Dimitra Mane on cd for the upcoming edition.. The artist performed parts of the work in composer's personal Portrait organized by Greek Composers Union at Hellenic Conservatory in Maroussi in 2010 and the whole collection at Mikros Horos Tehnis (Little Hall of Arts) in Glyfada, Attiki, in 2015. Parts of the work had been performed also by Eleni Papaspyrou students, from Herakleion Music School, in Theatrical Station, Herakleion, Crete and at Lillian Voudouri Library Hall in Athens Concert Hall in 2015.39. Jeux pour Deux for two pianos (2007)A work of neoclassical character with influences from jazz idiom. It is dedicated to the piano duo Dimitra Mane – Andy Miliory and to Maurice Ravel in the musical style of whom there are intentional references - by which was performed at Athenaeum Concert Hall Athens in 2008. The work have been secondly performed by Ting Ke and Chenshayang Huang at Boston University Concert Hall under Spring 14 Piano Ensemble Juries (K. Whereas many composers have written piano works inspired by children and the way children perceive the world around them, Childhood memories goes a step further by evoking these sentiments remembered by an adult many years later. As the adult reflects on the bright and carefree days of his or her childhood, inevitably, these reflections become colored by hitherto extraneous, un-childlike sentiments such as nostalgia and a pervading sadness brought on by the realization that those days are now lost forever. In Childhood memories, the recollections of moments and events in the child’s life are presented almost chronologically, beginning with the energetic pedaling of Bike ride and ending with the bittersweet festivity of Happy birthday! Thus, as the child grows and his or her understanding of reality becomes more acute, so the psychological and technical aspects of each individual piece’s musical language become more complex.Style: Post-Romantic; excellent pieces for concert performance and exam purposes. Technical difficulty: medium to difficult. Duration: 12 minutes circa.

Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child is traced back to the era of slavery. It's an expression of pain and despair as the lyrics describe the hopelessness of a child torn from its parents. Steal Away is a song with a coded message, not only about having faith in God, but messages about slaves running away to seek their freedom. Sung softly in the dark of night, it was a signal that the coast was clear and now was the time to escape their bondage. They sang hopefully: Steal away, steal away, Steal away to Jesus! Steal away, steal away home, I ain't got long to stay here. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. She also presented group piano and RMM sessions throughout the U.S. In addition to serving as a teacher trainer, she has written extensive articles on both group piano and RMM teaching. She has publications with Hal Leonard and Alfred listed on her website (www.brendadillon.com).

This is a spiritual tune with some great improv and chord changes. 2 page piano setting arrangement is challenging but not overly so, and well worth the effort to learn. Fun tune to learn and improvise over. I used it in church for a prayer and it was well received with a jamming drummer.

Another great winter recital number, and a great follower to Natalyn's arrangement of We Three Kings, What Child is This takes the pianist and the listeners through an adventure. It starts with a small, fast-paced, original intro that then jumps up to the higher keys of the piano. This is where the melody is first introduced, and it almost sounds like a music box. Then it jumps back down, using the beginning intro as an interlude. Then the full melody of the familiar tune comes in and makes its way to the chorus. A repetition of the whole melody that weaves through in creative ways (first the right hand up high, then the left hand gets the melody), and then back to the chorus with a quickly-moving baseline. Then everything slows and all that is left is a peaceful, short ending.

The modulation into the third verse is coupled with a key change, intended to convey a stronger, more sorrowful emotion. The work ends in quiet with the person alone. Alone. Most piano arrangements are based on that score to the Suite.Much more neglected is the original 1962 film score, which was never published. It is a far more delicately orchestrated piece, without the additional brass and percussion and the flashy opening arpeggios on harp and clarinet, more suited for the concert hall.The film score has only recently been reconstructed, and the present piano arrangement is based on this. It has a deceptive simplicity and a child-like innocence, which captures the essence of this prize-winning movie.

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. A caveat: I have no delusions, and offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy and comfort to other technically challenged yet serviceable pianists such as myself. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include He Leadeth Me, Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us, and O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee.
