Published by Stephen Smith (A0.1358432). Liszt's virtuoso transcription of the beloved Schubert Ave Maria is a wonderful work that has never been well-edited--until now! The notation used in all prior published versions had the melody placed on a third middle staff, making the piece annoyingly hard to read; bar after bar had groups of 11 or 12 32nd-notes beamed together, obscuring the metrical units; many bars involved 6 or 7 changes of clef; there were rhythms that didn't add up, and even misspellings of Italian terms! This edition addresses all of those issues, so that players can get down to the real work of learning this extraordinary piece. Liszt's setting of the song's second verse is something of a pianistic miracle: although both hands are engaged in constant arpeggiation and figuration, the melody somehow manages to appear in the middle of it all--almost as if played by a ghostly third hand!

The first in a series of solo piano works inspired by scenes from literature, The Infernal Whirlwind is both a representation of and reaction to Canto V in Dante's Inferno. Dante and his guide Virgil enter the second level of Hell, where the souls of people who gave into lust are condemned. At first Dante hears but a faint sound of commotion, but upon fully entering the level he encounters a massive tempest of souls being buffeted about. He recognizes some famous figures here and there. Eventually, his attention is drawn to two figures, the primary one being Francesca da Rimini. She tells of how, after reading of Sir Lancelot, she and her brother-in-law allowed themselves to love each other. Dante, deeply moved by the pathos of Francesca's story and disturbed by the continuous whirlwind, faints.Composers such as Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky have been inspired by Francesca da Rimini specifically, but The Infernal Whirlwind is more concerned with what the whirlwind itself represents: the control lust and desire held on these souls, both while living and in the afterlife. The central theme is a twelve-tone row, but the work is not truly serialist in construction or conception: It rather represents the winding, ranging, unsettled nature of passion itself, and of the whirlwind.The piece lasts about 5 minutes, and is for an advanced player. In the beginning it requires use of all three pedals (una corda, sostenuto, sustain). Perhaps the main influence is Liszt, and one could find useful a Lisztian approach to performance. .

For me it is one of the most beautiful love songs of that century. The reason why I arrange this song based on F. Liszt piano transcription is that Liszt's score with its three staves is very difficult to read. I wrote the melody notes in my arrangement in normal size and the accompaining arpeggios in smaller size.

He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. Internationally he is best known for his 1866 opera The Bartered Bride and for the symphonic cycle Má vlast (My Fatherland), which portrays the history, legends and landscape of the composer's native Bohemia. It contains the famous symphonic poem Vltava, also popularly known by its German name Die Moldau (in English, The Moldau).All but a handful of Smetana's compositions before his departure for Gothenburg are piano works. Some of these early pieces have been dismissed by music historian Harold Schonberg as bombastic virtuoso rhetoric derived from Liszt. Under Proksch, however, Smetana acquired more polish, as revealed in works such as the G minor Sonata of 1846 and the E-flat Polka of the same year. The set of Six Characteristic Pieces of 1848 was dedicated to Liszt, who described it as the most outstanding, finely felt and finely finished pieces that have recently come to my note. In this period Smetana planned a cycle of so-called album leaves, short pieces in every major and minor key, after the manner of Chopin's Preludes. The project became somewhat disorganised; in the pieces completed, some keys are repeated while others are unrepresented. In the humorous variations on a theme of Robert Schumann, Peter Wittrich lets the Fröhliche Landmann [Happy Peasant] slip into different roles and sets out with him on a journey through time from the Baroque to the modern era. In ten variations, Wittrich makes the Landmann familiar with the different styles and famous themes of the music epochs by treating Robert Schumann's popular theme contrapuntally in the sense of Bach, imposing Mozart's sonata form on it or letting the Landmann dance a proud polonaise with Frédéric Chopin.
