This piece is great for young children beginning adults alike. First, there is an Alberti bass in the left hand for most of the piece; Alberti bass is a patterned bass used by the likes of Mozart, and it is a relatively easy way to allow for the suspension of a chord. The pedaling for this piece can also teach students how to change the pedal when changing chord harmonies in a fairly simplified pattern that usually lasts a measure. The dynamic markings are sparse at this point, but guide the student to start paying attention to loud and soft dynamics, and it is a good learning lesson about breaks and pauses in the music at the end of one patterned phrase and beginning of another. The music itself leaves a lot of room for emotive expression because one can play with a rubato that allows one to stretch some measures to emphasize certain harmonies. The whole piece sounds as if it were a setting of fairy tale set in the misty mountains complete with wizards, elves, and princesses. It is perfect for an ambient and poetic mood of a player who would like to learn a relatively simple piece. To practice this piece, try perfecting each section before going on to the next.

Growl is a short, fast-paced piece for solo piano. The piece is cast in a roughly ABA/fast-slow-fast form, and centers around two musical ideas: a driving left-hand ostinato and a 16-bar melodic line. As the piece opens, the ostinato immediately establishes itself, low and menacing, punctuated by snaps and snarls as it races forward. When we first hear the melodic line, it is soft and distant – almost creepy – and it immediately repeats itself, much louder and more violently. After a brief return to the opening of the piece, we have a moment of respite as the ostinato abruptly drops away, and time stands still for a moment before giving way to a peaceful, ethereal version of the melody. But peace doesn’t last long as the melody becomes increasingly dissonant and violent, culminating in a brutal, crashing cacophony that surges into a triumphal climax. As the grand chords ebb away, the ostinato begins to quietly re-insinuate itself back into the fabric of the piece, building slowly to a return to the opening material and a screaming version of the melodic line. Suddenly, the triumphal chords come thundering back, warring with the ostinato – each interrupting the other, clashing to a frenzied, crashing end. Duration: ca. 5 min. Élegié in E Flat Minor for solo piano (Classical Music for Tablet Series) ♫ by Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (Opus 3.1) ♫ Rachmaninoff (born in 1873) , Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor, was considered one of the finest pianists of his day. His compositions belong to the Romantic period of music history. He graduated at the Moscow Conservatory in 1892. After the premiere of his First Symphony in 1897, the negative reaction by an important critic sent him into a tailspin of depression that lasted several years. ♫ In 1909 he performed a series of 26 performances with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the USA. In 1914 he travelled to England for a concert tour. ♫ In February 1917 on the day the Socialist Revolution began in St Petersburg, he performed a benefit piano recital in Moscow for wounded Russian soldiers. When he returned home, he found that a group of Social Revolutionary Party members had seized his property as their own communal property. He had invested most of his earnings on the estate, but left it behind. Rachmaninoff's concert performance in Yalta on 5 September 1917 was to be his last in Russia. The chaos and tension of the October Revolution was daunting. He composed with the noise of gunshots and rallies in the background. He received an invitation to perform 10 recitals across Scandinavia. He accepted the offer, using it as an excuse to obtain permits so he and his family could flee Russia. ♫ He returned to the USA in November 1918 and America became his home. When he became an American citizen in 1943, Sergei Rachmaninoff said: “This is the only place on earth where a human being is respected for what he is and what he does, and it does not matter who he is and where he came from.†He died in March 1943 from cancer at the age of 70. (condensed from Wikipedia - October 2022) ♫ Rachmaninoff’s Opus 3 contains 5 piano pieces. The first is the Élegié in E Flat Minor, the second is the Prelude in C# Minor (one of his most famous piano compositions). This opus was finished in 1892, when he was 19 years old. But with a tablet the cost of paper and ink is irrelevant. ♫ Although there are a lot more page turns with a 10 inch screen compared with letter size pages, the readability of the music (due to the backlighting on the tablet) and the portability of the music (travelling with a small tablet instead of oversized books or portfolios of sheet music) easily makes up for the extra page turns. ♫ Your purchase provides one .pdf file that contains both the tablet edition and the letter size page (printable) version. The Etherea Suite, Volume 1 is for intermediate to advanced players who enjoy lyrical, exciting, and showy repertoire, while expressing their imagination through their playing. Players get to musically explore the mountains, the desert, volcanoes, time travel to ancient times, and fight in battle! Volume I of the suite represents three main characters from the sci-fi, fantasy book Trials of the Innermost (release date May 26, 2023). Each movement has a distinct feel and reflects each character's personality. This edition features performance notes written by the composer, including musical elements unique to each movement, fun facts, and personal influences JohnWillard had in mind when creating the work. A graphic of the musical cryptogram system used to make the melodies for each character is featured at the end of the notes. The three movements imitate a sonata, with the overall order of the suite is slow, slow, fast. Some teaching elements in the first movement I. Vayriel: Protector of the Mountains, include: scalar passages (A natural minor scale), shifting hands position, rolled chords, repeated left hand patterns, ornaments, and pedaling. II. Zinvar: Peacemaker of the Volcanic Rifts is more challenging, but has more room for musicality, expression, exploring different touches on the piano, and ethereal use of pedaling, like the sostenuto pedal (if you have one!) The movement opens with a mysterious, wave-like arpeggiated left hand pattern, similar to pieces of Chopin or Rachmaninoff. The B section is practice in using the sostenuto (middle) pedal while playing softly, imitating Gregorian Chant. Best of all the ending sounds harder than it actually is and you get to play as loud as possible! III. Idrilia: Warrior of the Desert is fast paced, rhythmic, and inspired by video games. This piece is a nice supplement for students learning techniques found in toccatas, nocturnes, and pieces that require a big, full sound. The longest and most advanced movement, players can enjoy using all the things: pedaling, accents, quick changes in dynamic contrast, and a lyrical B section. Technique requires comfort with arpeggios, chord inversions, octaves, and sensitivity to voicing. Once mastered, this movement can be both fun to play as a stand-alone recital piece or an exciting treat to play for friends and family. You'll find yourself humming the simple melody as it transforms throughout the work, and the ending is a chance to play big chords by using the full range of the keyboard.
