FINDING MY VOICE is a short intermediate piano work that is simple and symbolic. Inspired by my 4 year old daughter Gracie, the piece represents the music we all have inside us and that we try to connect with early in life. 2 years prior to the start of the piece, I laughed in amusement as my daughter screamed at the top of her enthusiastic lungs to the music of Disney's The Little Mermaid. On the day I began this piece, she sang along to yet another Disney work, Coco, only now with her eyes closed and doing her best at her young age to match pitch and timbre. Of course all of this unaware to her, yet through each phase she enjoys the music and somehow understands and has the will to discover a way to match the art she loves so much. FINDING MY VOICE is simple and symbolic in two special ways. First, the entire song is built with a C, representing that center that we all are trying to find and match in our own way. But for 1/8th of a measure, there is continuously a C sounded throughout the piece. Secondly, the heard melody starts with experimentation, grows, developers, and then reoccurs with strength and confidence.

But while my etudes as a whole are loosely modeled after his, this piece, composed in 1992, is as stylistically remote from Chopin as he was from, say, Beethoven. My thirds etude is mellifluous., yearning, and deeply lyrical. It doesn't sound like an etude. It sounds like a distant song that just happens to be based on thirds and just happens to be quite difficult to play. Yes, virtuoso, no show-offy. Have fun.

This charming piano solo was first performed by its dedicatee, Jacques Leguerney’s good friend and muse Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944), in the Salle Debussy-Pleyel. They met around 1925. Cahen was the first person outside of his family to encourage his musical aspirations. For years, they met every Saturday to read through and discuss his music. She not only helped him with piano and harmony, but also performed his early chamber works, recruiting from her entourage to help him find high level interpreters for his music. Other early Leguerney works that she premiered included the Trio pour violon, violoncello et piano; the Sonatine pour flûte et piano; and two vocal chamber works presented by the Société Musicale Indépendente (S. M. I.), Epitaphe guerrière and Clair de lune for voice, flute and piano. Their friendship lasted until Cahen was deported from Paris on July 31, 1944, only a few weeks prior to the Liberation of Paris. Working with the Center of the Union Générale des Israélites de France in Saint-Mandé (a Parisian suburb), Thérèse Cahen had dedicated herself to the care of children of deported French parents. She left Paris with these children in the Convoy 77, and was taken to the gas chamber of Auschwitz. This ninth impromptu (2 min. 45 sec.) in the series of pieces inspired by sounds of childhood, namely early 90s video game music, is a workout for the left hand. The right hand plays a continuous ostinato high above the rest of the arrangement. Care must be taken with the ostinato so that it emphasizes the dotted quarter note pulse and not the quarter note pulse. This can be difficult because of the note grouping of two instead of three eight-notes.The left-hand has the herculian task of juggling both the chordal accompaniment and primary melody. At all times the melody found in the middle stave must sound out above all other parts. I'm not sure where the inspiration for this composition came from. There was no specific game or memory that brought forth the muse. There are no pedal markings indicated, so you may play with as much or as little pedal as you want. Tempo for the first section should be around 80-100 BPM, but you can go faster if you would like, and the middle section should be about 50% faster. In the last section, take very heavy rubato. When my friend, the composer and pianist Neil Crossland, asked me to write a work for him to perform, he requested that I give the piece a distinctly Scottish flavour. Perhaps as a consequence, hailing from Scotland as I do, the resulting work is distinctly autobiographical in nature. This is a challenging piece, aimed at advanced players. The four movements reflect the preoccupations of four stages of (my) life as seen in hindsight. The word dimensions in the piece's title refers to facets of my own character. The first movement, Complications, represents the self-image of the young. The music is adventurous and academic, full of the potential of a life yet to be lived and the earnest self obsession of youth. The second movement, Romance, is the search for love, though seen through the lens of memory and therefore touched with sadness. The third, Transience, shows the uncertainties of middle age, so full of frustration and of nostalgia. This movement contains my setting of the Jacobian poem Will Ye No Come Back Again?. The last movement, Revelry, blows away the uncertainties of the third movement with the driving energy of a Scottish reel. Perhaps increasing age brings a certain perspective; what does it matter if you have more past than future? Just get up and dance and let Dr. Music sweep your cares away. The piece features a musical fragment (first heard in bar 26 of the first movement) which has been the cause of much amusement between Neil Crossland and myself over the years. Neil has been composing music since his teens but the art has only much more recently become a big part of my life. However, musical ideas have always had a tendency to come into my head and, several years ago, I decided to play these two bars to Neil. Every so often, in the years that followed, he would teasingly ask me how my new piece was coming on, knowing full well that I'd have to admit that my magnum opus was still only two bars long! By setting the melodic fragment at the heart of this composition I have finally ensured that he can tease me about it no longer. More importantly, I hope that Neil enjoys our little in-joke.The audio file for this work is beautifully performed by the work's dedicatee, Neil Crossland.

It is also a type of bagpipe music (musette), as in the Musette in D from the Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook and the Musette in G from Bach's English Suite No. 3. Those are the models for my moosettes, rooted in tonality except for the last one. The left hand always sets up a drone or repeated pattern of notes to serve as accompaniment for the melody. I didn't indicate tempo marks, but basically they should all be moderately quick.

My studio is set up so that as I play I can look outside.This year in Tennessee we’ve had more snow than normal. There have been many school closings. Even Tennessee Tech shut down at times, which hardly ever happens.So I’ve had some opportunities to sit in my studio in the middle of the day, look out my window at the beautiful falling snow, and write music.I began today’s piece a few weeks ago, during one of the largest snowfalls I’ve seen since I moved here from Wisconsin. I composed a few measures that I liked, couldn’t think of where to go next, and put it aside for a time. For the next few days I kept coming back to it, always liking what I had already written, but not able to add anything new.Then we had another snowfall. This time I was able to finish the basic structure of the piece, but I got stuck when I started to polish it up.A couple of days ago it snowed yet again, and I completed the work and recorded it.Today is Saturday, and it’s not snowing as I write this. However, they’re predicting more snow on Monday, which is usually the day I edit my blog posts. [Last minute update: No snow on Monday, although we did get 2 inches of rain.]Apparently, this piece owes its existence to frozen precipitation. I considered naming it Paean to the Snow Muses, but I think I’ll stick with my original title, February.

Back to School 2015 – Piano Solo for Early Intermediate: The song was inspired while hiking slowly in the mountains appreciating nature. It has a rhythmic New Age style that uses cool contemporary chords for this level of playing. My students that have played this song have all used different pedaling and dynamics so I wrote none down. If they ask about pedaling I tell them to change the pedal each time the bass note plays. There is great left-hand crossover in the beginning and end of the song.
