This intermediate piece for piano (2 min. 30 sec.) is the eighth in a series of impromptus inspired by sounds of childhood, namely themes from early 90s video game consoles like Nintendo. This composition is indicative of many of the bluesy soundtracks that also contain splashes of unexpected and quirky sonorities, giving it a bona fide unearthly quality. Think of a western shoot-out aboard an alien spaceship. Performers should keep the tempo rock-solid with no rubato. The syncopated ostinato bass pattern may take some getting used to at first, but it is essential to the entire arrangement. Many of the melodic figures have crescendos or decrescendos that are unconventional, e.g. a decrescendo under an ascending phrase. The middle section has a sixteenth note passage that should be fingered by alternating left and right hands as marked. Follow my work at www.bendockery.com. About the Sonata Hymnica Series Program Note Composer James Siddons draws on the ethos of American rural hymns and spirituals to create evocations of the deeper, larger meaning of familiar church melodies. These sonatas for piano solo explore these deeper meanings in a variety of contemporary musical influences, while keeping in mind the acoustics of small rural churches of the late nineteenth century, with wooden floors and walls, high ceilings, and dimensions determined by local builders who knew how to shape a room for excellent acoustics in an age of no electricity and no microphones. These sonatas are but partly about the specific melodies and words, and mostly about their meaning in spiritual contemplation . . . and the piano, resonating, reverberant, sometimes whispering---as a sacred harp. Although these sonatas have no specific titles, the first sonata may be thought of as the Prayer Sonata, the second as the Travel Sonata, as in a spiritual journey, and the third sonata is about our greatest fear, that of being alone and without God. Sonata Hymnica No. 3 draws on two melodies from the African-American experience. One, Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)? was first published in 1899 in W. E. Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns but existed earlier as a folk hymn. It became the first spiritual to be included in a major hymnal, The Hymnal 1940 of the Episcopal Church in the U.S.A. Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child was sung by the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University from 1870 on, and was published in the Rev. Dr. Barton’s Old Plantation Hymns in 1899. Performance Note The pianist must keep in mind that these sonatas are about playing the piano as much as playing a composition. Musical effects characteristic of the piano and descriptive of the memory in American culture are the substances of these piano solos. Touch is important: in many places, several dynamics are called for on the same beat. Duration --- . Sonata Hymnica No. 3 --- 9 minutes. About the Composer Composer, musicologist, and pianist James Siddons studied composition with Dika Newlin, a protégé of Arnold Schoenberg, and electronic music with Merrill Ellis, founder of the electronic music program at the University of North Texas, where he also earned a PhD in musicology. After a year at the University of London, where he studied musical analysis at King’s College and electronic music at Goldsmiths’ College, Siddons spent two years in Japan as a research scholar at Tokyo University of Arts, participating in the Ethnomusicology Seminar of Fumio Koizumi. Siddons has also studied theology and liturgy at the Duke University Divinity School. In addition to books and articles on contemporary music and music in Japan, Siddons was written compositions in many genres. In one sense, parsimonious can mean frugal/stingy or restrained -  I hope the reflection of restraint is well-balanced here. Parsimonious can also be used to build cool science-y graphs with branched elements that show the connection. I suppose that’s why a theorist called chords that share two of the same notes as parsimonious. We could spend hours drawing graphs and geeking out over chords, or I can invite you to hear Parsimonious Prelude. This work winds through a journey of colorful harmonic transformations. As you listen, some connections between chords will feel familiar, and others, well, they might share notes between the chords - but they evoke a dramatic change - even though the change is only one note.

My students have enjoyed Don't forget to Walk the Bass for many years and the piece has enlightened them to the meaning of a walking bass line. Written for the mid-elementary level student, Walk the Bass combines a Blues, walking bass type, melody in the left hand with suspended chord accompaniment in the right hand in the A section. In the B section, the left hand walking bass keeps a steady beat as the right hand performs a rhythm-filled, well liked, melody. Don't Forget to Walk the Bass received honorable mention in the 2014 American College of Musician's International Composing Competition. Enjoy!

According to many world famous jazz musicians, Mustafazadeh is one of the pioneers and the architect of jazz in Azerbaijan. Musical prohibitions during the 1940s and 1950s meant that the playing of jazz was banned in the USSR, including Azerbaijan. Since there was no opportunity to get jazz records from anywhere, Mustafazade listened to jazz pieces, learning from movies where he heard jazz music and BBC radio and sang Meykhana, rhythmic poetry, which had also been banned. After listening on the radio, he and his friend Vagif Samadoglu attempted to recreate the music on the piano.From the 1960s, prohibitions put on jazz music were gradually lifted and thus the late 1960s and 70s became a time when Baku was a real center of locally inspired jazz. By this time, Mustafazade was making his way to his audience and his popularity grew. His name was often mentioned among other jazz musicians and he participated in festivals held in his native land, as well as in and outside the Soviet countries. Since making a strong impression in his early years at college, his music progressed and popularity grew; he appeared in many festivals.In 1966, Willis Conover, conductor of the Jazz Time radio program, even went as far as to say, Vagif Mustafazadeh is an extraordinary pianist. It is impossible to identify his equal. He is the most lyrical pianist I have ever known.
