This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost Mayâ€. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May†unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

I wrote this for a composition assignment at school one time and it started out with the moving bassline that is present for nearly the entire piece. The title itself describes the piece - “moving basslineâ€. After coming up with the moving bassline, I wrote the melody on top which is used throughout the piece and built upon. This piece uses a ternary form which is one of my favourite forms to write in. I especially like going in a slightly different direction the second and final time the A section comes around. So in the first A section, the bassline is introduced and the melody comes soon after. The bassline then transitions into the B section which features a mobile melody on top of the bassline. This was a lot of fun to write as I came up with 8 bars first and then repeated that theme two more times but with a more intense variation each time. Then in the final section of the piece, the original motif returns with some variations to keep it interesting and fresh.

Forty-First Street is a fun-to-play funky jazz solo written for early intermediate students. It features hands playing the melody in parallel as well as a RH melody and LH bass note texture. Rhythms are mostly quarter notes and eighth-notes. It's a great piece to practice hand independence and articulations. Forty-First Street is in my Five-Finger Jazz! series and would be a great addition for your next recital!

It is one of the most well loved works of Johann Sebastian Bach. It feels romantic and has poise and tenderness, so characteristic of the slow movements of Bach. The gorgeous melody is accompanied by a basso continuo accompaniment that almost like the heartbeat of this piece. You can also see my performance video of this arrangement. This arrangement for solo piano is a wonderful way to experience this piece as a soloist. Enjoy.

A modern, meditative original composition, suitable for students and advanced musicians alike.Composer’s Note:Nojoqui Falls (pronounced NAW-ho-wee) is a seasonal waterfall in Santa Barbara County, California, in the interior foothills of the Santa Ynez Mountains. It is the subject of stories from the Chumash, a Native American people who have lived along California’s central coast for thousands of years. When the area experiences extreme drought, sometimes the waterfall reduces to a trickle. But it is a beautiful, shady place with a magical quality, and the water always returns.For interested students or teachers, here are a few pedagogical notes:Pedal ad lib is appropriate for this piece. Unless a player has very large hands, the right hand will need to cover most of the top notes in the bass clef (the C ostinato). This can be a welcome challenge for students, as they will need to balance this with sustaining and shaping the top melody notes. Some of the middle C ostinato notes are indicated as optional, since they are already struck as melody notes during the same beat. (But they are still notated in case another instrument plays the melody.) It might feel awkward to strike some of the other C ostinato notes that are rhythmically nearby, but it can also be a good way to practice leaving that sustained melodic note ringing while striking the same note soon after with a much quieter dynamic, which requires both control and skilled use of the pedal.About the Composer:Emily Nafius is a pianist in Southern California with her musical roots in jazz. As a soloist or sideman, she has performed at numerous music venues around California in an eclectic mix of styles, and recorded with a variety of singer-songwriters and rock bands. Very classical sounding, with Alberti Bass eighth notes, and right hand melody which consists mostly of quarter notes and occasional eighth and half notes. More pleasing than exciting. Musical interest will come from observing the articulation, especially the two-note slurs, and the staccato notes. The biggest challenge is probably balance between the hands: the right hand must sing above the left hand: mezzo forte actually means probably close to forte for the right hand, while the left hand must be piano. Bagatelle means trifle. The form is A-B-A* where the form of the A section in itself is A-B-B*-A* which means there is not that much material to learn. A student at this level will be familiar with Alberti Bass but does probably not have the stamina for a full page of continuous eighth notes, therefore, at the end of every four-measure phrase, the left hand gets a break, in the form of two quarter notes or a half note, instead of continuous eighth notes. Two pages, Level 2. ~ I frequently make changes to my compositions. This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6. Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills! While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village. In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist.For more information on Armenian music, refer to : Kazarian, Hachig. The degree of virtuosity is relatively low, but nevertheless not suitable for absolute beginners. Technically, the main characteristic of this piece is the polyrhythm 2 against 3: the melody subdivides the quarter in 2, and the accompaniment plays triplets. In this sense, an answer to Carl Czerny's polyrhythmic studie in E major. Please use abundant pedal when playing this piece. The idea is to generate a cloud of sound, not a machinal pattern. The sound character of this piece should be closer to Debussy than to Scarlatti. The initial indication scorrevole (fleeting) should orientate the character and the sound quality, the touch. Fermatas and caesuras should add time to the bar, like breathing in. In bar 8 (end) the silence is only in he left hand: the note of the right hand shouldn't be interrupted. This is actually clear if one read the rhythms carefully, but my experience tells me that it is prudent to underline this particular point. In bar 16 (and similar places), left hand: it is the central melody what should be in foreground, not the bass. Imagine that the melody is played by a cello or viola, and the bass by a double bass (or better: a bassoon). Try to achieve a different timbre and to separate therefore both layers. The title refers to this poem: Sum venti ingenium breve Flos sum, scilicet, aeris …… Sum blandum, petulans, vagum, Pulchrum, purpureum, et decens, Comptum, floridulum, et recens. My students have enjoyed Don't forget to Walk the Bass for many years and the piece has enlightened them to the meaning of a walking bass line. Written for the mid-elementary level student, Walk the Bass combines a Blues, walking bass type, melody in the left hand with suspended chord accompaniment in the right hand in the A section. In the B section, the left hand walking bass keeps a steady beat as the right hand performs a rhythm-filled, well liked, melody. Don't Forget to Walk the Bass received honorable mention in the 2014 American College of Musician's International Composing Competition. Enjoy!

This is a very dramatic arrangement of O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus for advanced intermediate piano solo. The intro, interlude and ending are borrowed from Bach's 2-part Invention in A minor. The hymn begins quietly and simple, but builds in intensity by the 2nd verse with bass octaves, chords, and arpeggios and R.H. 3 and 4 note chords. Use rubato on the quieter sections for a very moving performance. LOTS of helpful fingering added (especially the Bach sections!). This tune of the hymn is an old Welsh melody that is very haunting; it blends with the Bach invention very nicely.
