I have written a programmatic, neo-romantic/post-romantic prose and musical fragment/miniature based on Schlegel's writings about a Hedgehog. Fragment in the sense that it is not fully developed, yet, in another sense, it is overdeveloped for its length. There are several modern elements in that it is bitonal at one point. At another point, I pit Scriabin's mystic chord, which is his synthetic mode, against what I feel is its nearest aeolian mode, c-minor, which is modernistically dissonant. It is written in 'classicized' AABA popular song form, which is perfect for a miniature. It revolves around the programmatic, free verse' Prayer,' a plea to God for sleep, elusive due to the mourning of lost love and the associated emptiness and grief felt deep in the night. It is motivic in that there is a repeated augmented 6 to a half-diminished cadence that introduces the theme and then serves to transition each small section, in a secondary dominant style repetition until reaching tonic. -A1 is a simple statement of the linear theme and harmony in 6ths, and 9ths, almost in keeping with the introductory and transitionary cadence, at least intervallically. -A2 is a restatement of that theme with an added countermelody (which becomes the subject of section B) woven between the upper linear melody and the altered bass accompaniment. -B begins with a short statement of the countermelody bi-tonally, the left hand in c minor, the right in g minor. There is a brief transposition between several keys, bitonally, while the sostenuto pedal holds a pedal tone until it attenuates completely. The two measures build from repressed despondency to rage, as strong emotions often do, quickly turning to dissonant chaos. The dynamics and intensity build to a diminished chord whose top note moves up half a step to a Scriabin mystic chord arpeggio. The held sustain pedal melds the dissonance together with emotional tumult, which fades as quickly as it came, as outbursts often do. -A3 starts with the motivic cadence and a deep bass pedal tone. This section is the crowning moment in the piece. In sixths, the macabre accompaniment moves to the right-hand upper tessitura as the more developed 'A' melody moans below in the bass and baritone as the music ebbs away. A simple c-minor arpeggio strains against a very similar Scriabin mystic chord arpeggio, an octave or a minor seventh apart, ending on an A major and A flat in sweet, gentle, unresolved dissonance against a dying root pedal tone, the final teardrop.

The flurries and the columns. The fragment of the poem (by Javier Adúriz) that heads this work underlines the impossibility – and the wish – of opposing the ephemeral, of contradicting transience. Technically, this musical work is based on a harmonic field of semitone + minor third + whole tone, which actually includes all intervals from semitone to tritone. I call this harmonic field 'modo Verdi' in my notes, because he uses it (as scala enigmatica) in his Quattro Pezzi Sacri. Although it is conceived for toy piano, I do not object to this work being played on other keyboard instruments, nor to its being adapted for various instrumental duets. Evaporación detenida (Stopped evaporation or Evaporation at standstill) was composed in Bremen on October 30, 2021 in the framework of an invitation by the US-American keyboardist David Bohn (a native of Wisconsin), to whom it is dedicated. He is active primarily in Bremen (Germany), where he teaches at the Hochschule für Künste and at the University. The piano piece Bad Hombres Jumping Over my Wall While Yelling '¡Arriba!, ¡Arriba!' was composed in Bremen, Germany, in August 2018, for the project 45miniatures by pianist Nick Phillips. The overall character of this piece responds vaguely to Nicholas Phillips' suggestion: playful/childish outbursts, in the form of heckler chords or bad hombre-like non-chord tones. The title depicts a surrealistic, clownesque, ridiculous situation; a dream for some and a nightmare for others.For those totally unaware: the expression Bad Hombres was used by president Donald Trump during the third 2016 United States Presidential Debate. While answering a question about his immigration policy, Donald Trump stated that there were a lot of drug lords in the United States and that they needed to be removed. He concluded his comment by saying we have some bad hombres here and we have to get them out. (thus implying that the responsible of US' drug problems are Latinos)Character and moods: happy, merry, mysterious. About the performance All the piece consists of mini clusters (two minor seconds). The notation can be sometimes obscure (due to the many unavoidable accidentals). To facilitate the reading (deciphering) of the score, the easiest is to follow the highest note of each cluster: they usually form a simple chord. For instance, bar 17 is (melodically speaking) a F7 chord. Got it? L = Left Hand R = Right Hand The verbal comments along the music are not meant to be actually read aloud, but alla mente (like in some Satie's music). Robert Schumann est le premier poète en musique à s’être interesse au mystère de l’enfance. S’adaptant à l’univers enfantin, il accomplit parfaitement le genre de la miniature instrumentale monothematique, qui a ete tente auparavant par Beethoven dans les Bagatelles, suivi par Schubert dans les moments musicaux. Ses petites pièces, contrairement à ce que laisserait entendre le titre, ne se destinent pas à des mains enfantines. Selon les propres termes de Schumann, ces “treize petits trucs ont ete concus par un grand enfant comme souvenir pour des personnes qui ont grandi”. Ces treize miniatures dont chacune ne depasse pas plus de deux pages, se contentent d’une structure formelle d’une grande simplicite. Expressives et distinctes les unes des autres, chacune est une perle de musique pure. Le cycle debute sur la rêveuse et delicate pièce n°1 Pays Lointains, que l’imaginaire couronne d’un rien de melancolique. Les premières mesures devoilent une melodie qui aspire à l’evasion avec une sixte ascendante, douceatre oscillation de triolets de la voix centrale, harmonies simples de septième diminuee et dominante avant le retour à la tonique sol majeur. Le discours est evoque à demi mot tout en contenance ce qui donne de l’espace à l’imagination de l’interprète. La celèbre page centrale Rêverie n°7 (Traumerei), bouscule ce cycle du côte des bemols avec son fa majeur, avant le retour aux dièses pour finir en sol majeur initial. Dans les premières pièces, Schumann axe son profil melodique sur l’intervalle de sixte ascendante suivi de sa desinence melodique. Tandis qu’au moment où commence la pièce centrale, schumann expose son visage eusebien axe sur une quarte, tout en installant de la douceur avec Reverie jusqu’à la fin du recueil. Rêverie a ete l’objet d’une polemique en 1920 où Alban Berg demontra avec brillance à Hans Pfitzner que cette petite pièce d’une grande simplicite pouvait contenir un enseignement immensement riche pour tout musicien. Le manuscrit original des six menuets est perdu et il n'existe actuellement que des esquisses de la version pour orchestre. La transcription pour piano des menuets a sans doute ete faite par Beethoven lui-même et cette version pour piano à deux mains est publiee à Vienne en mars 1796 par Arteria. Elle portait comme titre : « VI Menuetten / Für das clavier / von Herrn / Ludwig van Beethoven / 2ten Theil » Dans ce menuet, Beethoven adopte une forme classique en trois parties, celle du « menuet avec trio ». Le rythme pointe utilise dans ce menuet est une figure temporelle de predilection du compositeur. Il represente le rythme caracteristique de cette danse : à l'origine, le menuet est une danse française campagnarde qui a ete par la suite adopte à la cour du roi Louis IV. Rejouissance et allegresse resonnent dans le sautillement de cette pièce miniature. Sur un ton par moments energiques par d’autres langoureux, son balancement evoque à demi mot la personnalite stylistique du personnage et permet au pianiste de se divertir sur un morceau de Beethoven qui se destine à l'expression corporelle. Stephen Porter's project Re-Imagining Debussy required the work to interact in some way with the music or compositional spirit of Debussy. I answered by using some of his technical devices: chords parallelisms, whole-tone scales, brief melodic shapes, central notes and a broad multi-layered texture. 2) Ave VerdiA miniature composed on the death-day of Verdi (27th January 2013). The piece is based on the 7-tone scala enigmatica used by Giuseppe Verdi in his Ave Maria (1889, first from Quattro Pezzi Sacri) and its complement (the missing 5 notes), treated as twelve-tone field. The piece is dedicated to that other Giuseppe: Lupis. The scala enigmatica: [Do - Reb - Mi - Fa# - Sol# - La# - Si] Complement: [Re - Mib - Fa - Sol - La]Original Tone Row: 0 1 4 6 8 10 11 2 3 5 7 9 3) SchubertangoTango music has more to do with Franz Schubert than with any other classical composer. Harmonies and types of melody are extremely similar. Such similarities cease, at the latest, when we come to rhythm. This miniature shows how Schubert's melodies can be flawlessly integrated into the musical language of tango. If one doesn't know the original pieces, you will not even recognize at all that there is a quotation. In the score, the composer kindly tags the sources of the quotations; nevertheless, there is also a hidden quotation (or rather an allusion) that doesn't stem from Schubert: it is the chord progression (not the melody) of a very well known tango of the modern era. Do you find it? The Schubertango was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 28 November 2014 and has a duration of 1 minute. The piece is dedicated to pianist Stephen Porter, in the frame of his project Re-Imagining Schubert, hosted by Vox Novus (New York City) and their cycle Fifteen Minutes of Fame. Juan Maria Solare, born 1966 in Argentina, works currently in Germany as composer, pianist (contemporary & tango) and teaching at the University of Bremen and at the Hochschule fuer Kuenste Bremen. This advanced work is the first of a collection of Fantasies or miniature tone poems for piano . The piece is in three sections and has numerous influences, some Impressionistic, some Romantic and it always is difficult to try and fuse these styles while keeping them congruent. The shimmering opening portrays a fairie being chased by something or someone, which seems to gets closer and closer to her. This section ends with a series of dominant seventh/nine chords and a rallentando. The slower middle segment introduces a new melody and is where she is able to hide and catch her breath which then segues (via an accelerando) leading to her discovery and the chase resumes until her escape at the very end (I hope). The challenging left hand is the main engine for the melody, which is stated in the first measure and is presented again and again in different keys and accompaniment styles. The arpeggiated figures are influences of Ravel and Liszt but I tried to imbue it with a sense of delicacy even in some of the more powerful moments. This produces a light, which I imagine would coruscate in the evening forest. This work is appropriate for all pianist. Da mir aber kleine Aufträge grundsätzlich zu groß geraten, beschloss ich, aus der Not eine Tugend zu machen und einfach ein richtiges großes Stück en miniature zu schreiben. Der Witz des Zyklus besteht darin, dass er trotz seiner nur 5minütigen Spieldauer (ohne Widerholungen sind es sogar nur dreieinhalb Minuten) ein ausgewachsener Variationszyklus mit den wichtigsten Merkmalen dieser Form ist. Das tänzerische Element des a-Moll-Themas verschwindet immer mehr bis zu einem dramatischen Trauermarsch in der vierten Variation, um dann in der letzten Variation wieder zu dem Schubert’schen Original zurück zu finden, allerdings in A-Dur und in langsamerem Tempo, so dass sich in seiner bitteren Süße sogar noch ein Überbieten des typischen Schubert-Tons ereignet. Das kleine Opus ist das Schwester-Werk des etwas umfangreicheren Variationszyklus op.64 Variationen über einen Ländler von Schubert für Klavier zu vier Händen, mit dem es in mancherlei inhaltlichem und musikalisch-formalem Zusammenhang steht. - Stefan Heucke.

The Concertino Classico (Little Classical Concerto) is a somewhat more advanced sequel to the earlier Concertino Barocco, also available from Mastery for Strings Press. This time two movements from familiar sonatinas by the German/Danish composer Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) have been transformed into miniature concerto movements by adding and interpolating short tutti passages at appropriate points in the form. Not a note has been added or subtracted from the original keyboard solos, so that a student who has mastered the originals may play this Concertino simply by memorizing the exact points in the original pieces where additional music for the orchestra (second piano) has been added and they must wait to continue. A student may use any standard edition of either Sonatina to learn and perform these movements. I hope that studying and performing the movements of the Concertino Classico will give an advancing student an enjoyable taste of performing as a concerto soloist using familiar repertoire, as well as providing a bridge to the standard keyboard concerto repertory.
