Five Preludes is a set of short pieces for solo piano, exploring various sounds and ideas. Each prelude is one to two minutes in length.Prelude 1: Play-ludeThe main idea of this prelude uses parallel fourths in the left hand with short, dissonant statements in the right hand. The contrasting second idea has a tonal bass line progression below a chromatic figure. The 3/8 time signature gives the piece a quasi-swing feel.Prelude 2: Pray-ludeThis prelude alternates between F major and Gb major, with slow reflective melodic statements over sustained roots. The statements gradually become shorter and shorter until the recapitulation.Prelude 3: Pre-lewdThis whimsical prelude uses a five-note synthetic scale throughout (1, m3, P4, m6, M7), but the scale modulates in a pattern that suggests a standard 16-measure blues progression. The compositional elements of choice for this prelude are thirds in contrary motion, with an anchor tone in either hand, rotating in each measure, moving through various harmonies and dynamics. The piece is styled after some of the shorter pieces of Robert Schumann, with their piquant dissonances and tight construction. It is designated as Early Romantic because of the relative lack of variety in the figuration, but it is not Classical, as the harmonic movements are not the usual progressions one sees in Mozart or Schubert. Duration is about 1 min, 45 secs.

Step-wise melodic motion, and bass tracks treble throughout, except for two places marked with an asterisk. Four-part harmony moving in parallel, as might the two-part organum of the 14th century. But, you'll find these chords rich and smooth, as the colours subtly shift with each rise and fall of the line. About 4 mins, can go even slower, if you want move time for each chord to resonate. Great for liturgical or ceremonial use as well as concert or recital performance.

The Preludes by Cesar Cui are a fascinating set of pieces, with a distinctive character for each tonality. The pianistic challenges are equal to any other set composed before, during and after its time, and the musical attributes bring out the tender, passionate and soulful emotions of the human spirit. Beginning and ending in C Major, the structure of the set goes from minor to Major for each tonality, for example, after C major, e minor, then G Major, followed by b minor then D Major, etc. After reaching the most accidentals ('sharp's), the composer uses their enharmonic key signatures with most 'flat' minor and Major key signatures until he is back to one 'flat' and, then 'a minor' and finally, 'C Major' to conclude the set. The Preludes were brought to my attention in the 1980s from Charles Ervin, who frequented international piano competitions, and asked if I had ever encountered the opus.. From microfilm, I printed the Jurgenson edition, edited them, and recorded the first integral set of the 25 Preludes for the Marco Polo label, which was further re-printed for Naxos (8.555557). A military engineer, Cesar Cui was also a General, and composed under the tutelage of Mily Balakirev. Having French and Lithuanian parentage, he was not Russian, yet, because of his relationship with Balakirev, became known as one of the Russian Five (Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov). His music is often attributed to Robert Schumann, and more French in style than Russian. It is my hope that this set of compositions will become as well known as those by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Scriabin and the like, and performed more frequently by pianists of today and the future.Jeffrey Biegel.

I have composed six preludes for piano that present interpretive challenges for the pianist and evoke diverse emotional responses from the listener. I was inspired by the improvisatory nature of the short pieces that were common in the Baroque era that often threaded rhythmic and melodic motifs into a tapestry of sound. And I was particularly influenced by the spirit of spontaneity evident in the sets of short pieces composed in the Romantic ear that often dramatically played out for a particular emotional response. Among the preludes composed for piano, the commonly performed pieces are of Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Shostakovich, or Kapustin, in addition to Chopin. In contemporary concerts, prélude can be performed separately or as suites, which become extensive music piece that is composed of a series of individual pieces. This is my third volume of piano work after States of Mind and Wonders, 24 pieces of concert etudes in total. It is named as Vacillation because it collects my numerous changes of mind and thoughts within the past year. Most pieces are inspired by whims or epiphany, so they have improvisational quality and often are back and forth with uncertainty in musicality. Clinical psychiatric terms are incorporated into the title of each piece to associate the audience with human emotions and behaviors, and to provide more vivid images and colors for the audience to visualize the music. However, this piece went on to be performed in our holiday show, “A Winter’s Evening.†I have always loved the Gustav Holst melody to Christina Rossetti’s poem, subsequently it was that setting that I chose to arrange for our group. When I was selecting pieces for my second collection of Christmas Preludes, I knew this would be among them. The piece starts out quite gently, and in my mind’s ear I hear a cello and oboe establishing a mood of utter serenity and calm as the snow gently falls outside the frost-covered window. Soon the oboe is joined by a clarinet as they play a duet while the cello continues the gentle sway of eighth notes. For the pianist, there must be great control of the left hand to keep it as calm as possible while the melody floats above, just as the snow falls to the earth. As the second verse begins, the right hand now plays a triplet pattern beneath the melody. It is a gentle breeze, stirred by the wings of angels and cherubim, upon which the crystalline flakes swirl and dance in the cold night air. All the while the left hand continues its steady motion of eighth notes. Halfway through the triplet pattern moves to the left hand and the right hand takes up the eighth notes while still keeping the melody above all. The verse comes to a close with a slowing of the tempo to emphasize the importance of what the poet states in the last lines of the poem: “Yet what I can I give Him, — Give my heart.†It is all that any of us can do, and all that we are asked to do.
