Piano: Genaro Fernández.This work is a tribute to Thomas Mann, who published The Magic Mountain in 1924 and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929.According to the author’s own words, the novel is a journey into decay which is lived in a mountain sanatorium dedicated to the cure of tuberculosis. But it is also the search for the idea of man, the concept of a future humanity through the prism of death.The uneven rhythmic pattern of the score (6+5+5/16 and 9+7/16) sifts the hope and generates restlessness. The generating complex {6,5,5,9,7} conforms the DNA of the whole work and is present in both formal structure and harmony or melody. The funerary sequence of the Gregorian, ‘Dies irae, dies illa’ (On the day of the wrath, that day), hangs throughout the piece until it becomes evident and dominates the spirit. The death precedes to a new life.---Esta obra é uma homenagem a Thomas Mann, quem publicou A Montanha Mágica em 1924 e recebeu o prémio Nobel de Literatura em 1929. Segundo as palavras do próprio autor, a novela é uma viagem à decadência que se vive num Sanatório de montanha dedicado a curar a tuberculose. Mas também é a busca da ideia do homem, o conceito de uma humanidade futura através do prisma da morte.O padrão rÃtmico desenquadrado da partitura (6+5+5/16 e 9+7/16) criva a esperança e gera inquietação. Dedicated to pianist Eric Xi Xin Liang, PIANO SONATA by American composer Aaron Robinson is a programmatic work on a monumental scale. Composed in four movements representing four areas of Maine: Machigonne (Portland), Down East, Malaga Island and Katahdin, each paints a detailed portrait of a specific time and place in the State’s history. Its compositional structure draws heavily on the sights and sounds associated with each region while weaving original themes throughout. Mimesis is used to represent the native calls of the indigenous birds found within the state, such as the phoebe, bobolink and the pileated woodpecker; while hymns, songs and sea shanties are incorporated to represent various time periods. Movement I - MACHIGONNE - Native Americans originally named what is today the Portland peninsula of Maine “Machigonne”, which translates “Great Neck”. The movement quotes several sacred and ritual songs of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine. The struggle between centuries of habitation by the native peoples of the area is represented by the arrival of early settlers and illustrated by juxtaposing hymn tunes and dance music of the past eras.Movement II - DOWN EAST - is the eastern coastal area of the state closely associated with the French territory of Acadia. Replete with historic sea shanties and tunes, the sound of tolling ship and buoy bells, lighthouse fog horns, and ocean winds are intertwined to create a high-spirited journey which culminates in the familiar Shaker tune from Alfred, Maine.Movement III - MALAGA ISLAND - Today an uninhabited reserve, Malaga Island was once the home to an interracial community dating from the 1860s to 1911, when its residents were forcibly evicted by the State. The opening theme represents the remnants of the island in its present state; haunted by the memories and unsettling muted solitude of the past and its historical injustice. A peaceful hymn depicting simpler times becomes slowly unraveled, erupting in a traumatic chaos that is never resolved. A ghostly refrain can be heard in the distance as the movement concludes.Movement IV - KATAHDIN - Mount Katahdin (“Catahdrin”), called “Great Mountain” by the Penobscot Native Americans, is located within the Northeast Piscataquis County, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The grandeur of its majesty is portrayed by the original themes depicting epic rising and falling passages traversing over centuries. Native Americans believed the mountain to be the home of the storm god Pamola (a place to be avoided), which is characterized by ever-changing major and minor keys within the often times turbulent motifs. The sonata ends in a tonal key: bringing the atonality and discordant change of the work and its representation as a whole to a final resolve.PIANO SONATA lasts approximately 25 minutes.

To quote Wikipedia: Sweet Betsy from Pike is an American ballad about the trials of a pioneer named Betsy and her lover Ike who migrate from Pike County (Missouri?) to California. The cover art here is drawn by artist, Kaytha Coker Potts, whose image captures the imagined Betsy and Ike as they cross rivers, plains, and mountains on the way to California. The music for the various movements of Sweet Betsy, similarly, can be seen as musical pictures of this harrowing yet thrilling trip. Movement I pictures a joyful determination to make the trip, accompanied by energy enough to make the early struggles endurable. Movement II pictures rest and reflection. The evening comes when one thinks through the events of the day with peace and anticipation of continuing the journey tomorrow. Movement III paints the joy of the journey with the end in sight. High energy and much joy is found here.This sonatina was inspired by – and in many ways patterned after – Dmitri Kabalevsky’s Sonatina Op. 13, No. 1. The first movement, Allegretto, imitates Kabalevsky’s use of the arch phrase in which two bars are mirrored by the following two bars. As the movement progresses, the tempo adjusts to meet continuing challenges – all filled with energy. In the second movement, Introspection Andante, one takes the time to rest and reflect and, in so doing, to find the mental and musical balance needed on a journey as well as in music. Movement III, the sonatina’s name sake, is in rondo form and rollicks along in b minor and 6/8 meter. The tune, Sweet Betsy, always in mind yet unstated, finally erupts three times in the center section, first in the left hand (in B Major), then a second time (in F Major) before appearing in the right hand (in C# Major) while accompanied (in B Major) in the left hand. The resulting conflicting tonalities are followed by a transitional sixteenth note run leading back to the first theme in b minor as the rondo plays out.
