I must admit that I was far more familiar with the 1956 setting of this poem as sung by Bing Crosby to music by Johnny Marks than I was to the one found in many hymnals. It was on several of the Christmas albums that would be played on the phonograph in our house during the holiday season. However, I chose to arrange the carol setting for this collection as it resonated more deeply with me and seemed to better capture the essence of the poem by Longfellow. He wrote it during the Civil War, on Christmas Day of 1863, and several of the verses make reference to the war. While I did not set any of the Civil War verses, there is an almost martial quality to the opening music and one can almost hear the brass choir ringing out in the first verse. With each subsequent verse, the rhythm of the right hand becomes quicker, moving from half notes to quarter note triplets to eighth notes and finally to eighth note triplets in the final verse. For the most part, the left hand maintains the steady beat of quarter notes, with the exception of the final verse where it begins to move in eighth notes setting up a two-against-three pattern between the hands. It is the most jubilant of the verses and feels like an explosion of sound as the bells ring out across all the land proclaiming God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men..

At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Aphelion is one of my few pieces that's meant to tell a story and it's not incredibly specific, but here is the story of Aphelion. However, the definition of aphelion first is incredibly important.aphelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun.And it's very important to know the definition of its absolute antonym: perihelion.perihelion (noun):the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun.These are terms used in astronomy to describe a celestial object's extreme distance from the sun. I'm using this to describe a relationship between two people. The type of relationship does not matter, it is simply just a relationship. However, you perceive it: platonic, romantic, etc.That is up to your interpretation.Aphelion follows the story of two people, with the start of the piece not actually being the aphelion, but however the perihelion, starting in D Major.It highlights their relationship as perfect, well-rounded, and flawless relationship. Some may call it a honeymoon era/phase or just the possible closest two people could be, i.e the perihelion.Then the two slowly drift away, with a shift to B Minor and D Minor. Issues, flaws, and problems that weren't there before begin to appear. These issues are quickly shoved under the rug, and the two pretend that they are nonexistent. The piece shifts back to D major incredibly quickly, however, there is a slight sense of uneasiness within the piece that I intended to create as it goes through this relationship that is clearly rocky, but it isn't being addressed because neither are choosing to communicate these issues.Then, the mysterious part hits very quickly, this is the aphelion. following a D Minor chord progression, then a shift into D minor itself. This part is where the relationship issues reach a boiling point, neither can stand the other and any attempt to resolve the issues is essentially useless. They stay in a toxic relationship. However, it's labeled as mysterious because the future is an absolute mystery to the two. They don't know what will happen. Then, one confronts the other, they choose to genuinely communicate.It's where the shift back to D Major occurs. They finally come to an understanding. At this point, they can choose to stay in the relationship, and work on the issues, or come to an understanding that it might not work from here, because a relationship takes two. There is a sense of peace, they are finally at peace with one another and their situation. Life can continue moving on, and the piece ends on an A Major chord. This is because A Major can be interpreted as one finally becoming content.That is the story that I intended to tell by writing Aphelion.

Published by Music Innovators Workshop (A0.984700). This is a piano arrangement of the Toccata portion of the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor. It is notated on a key map tablature. Additionally, this wonderful piece has been simplified by removing some notes, but it has not been shortened. In this arrangement, it is still a wonderful piece for those who have not yet gained the skill to play the full piano arrangement. This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). Published by Music Innovators Workshop (A0.984770). Earlier, I hesitated to publish this version that I arranged several years ago. This piece is so very well known and loved that I was concerned that a simpler version would not be well received. I recently changed my mind after playing through this version. This arrangement opens up playing this piece to many pianists who may find the original too daunting a challenge. Players and listeners will find that the arrangement sounds very much like the original. Some listeners may find it a little less full sounding - most won't be able to tell the difference.Here are the differences. (Of course its written on tablature, but that's a different issue.) First, the simpler version is not simple. It is very difficult. It just is not as difficult as the original. Second, it sounds very much like the original. It is a very full arrangement. The whole piece is there. It has not been shortened.The simplification consists mainly of removing some, but not all, of the doubling and tripling of notes. This lightens the feel of the piece just a bit. The recap of the theme at the end is simplified by changing the 4 note chords to 3 note chords, Where the right hand leaves the chords and moves very quickly down to double two bass notes and immediately back up to find the chords again, and again, the arrangement omits these few notes to leave the right hand where it is to play the chords.

This musical piece is comprised of two twelve-tone rows, atonal music based on synthetic scales unique to each composition, which are based on medieval plainsong chants whose systemization was begun by Pope Gregory I during the sixth century AD. A simple explanation of this composition is that it is the world's oldest notated music combined with modern 20th-century music theory that eschews traditional melody and harmony for synthetic scales unique to each composition. The music is complex and dissonant, although the conversion of the two plainsong chants to twelve-tone rows retains a semblance of a tonal center at given points throughout. Still, the entire piece of music is that same melody utilized harmonically: just forward, backward, upside-down, backward and upside-down, rhythmically altered, transposed, displaced up or down, or split into smaller cells and then reprocessed in the same way mentioned above. I have also borrowed the Baroque Period techniques of the two-part invention and four-voice fugue combined with serial musical techniques that may offend the average listener's traditional musical sensibilities but make logical structural sense. I used the Dies Irae (The Day of Wrath) and Tuba Mirum (The Last Trumpet Call). The authorship of the chants has been attributed to many saints from Gregory to Thomas of Celano but probably evolved from early Jewish psalmody carried forward by the earliest Jewish converts to Christianity, which further developed into trochaic metered poetry by successive monks. It was set to memorized plainsong heralding back, in part, to Jewish worship. The text of the Dies Irae is very similar to Zephaniah 1:16​. The last trumpet call that raises the dead in Christ is comparable to the Apostle Paul's account written in his first epistle to the Corinthians Chapter 15 and first epistle to the Thessalonians Chapter 4. The two epistles may, or may not, be related to the Final of the Seven Trumpets bringing God's Judgement on the earth spoken of in Revelation 11. The relationship of the trumpet mentioned in the epistles to those written about in Revelation divides theologians, but I digress into unrelated matters. Despite the modern theory, the music is still movingly visceral because of its conceptually descriptive nature. It is full of aural symbolism following the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum, making it a type of program music ala Hector Berlioz of the Romantic Period. The music is, therefore, genuinely eclectic because it has blended qualities of several musical periods. The final section of the video explains the symbolism. The music difficulty is virtuosic, extremely taxing to play.

This piece is a free adaptation and a complete reworking of a study by Felix Le Couppey (1811-1887), from his L'Agilité, Opus 20, 25 Progressive Studies for Mechanism and Light Touch. In its original form, this study was a charming little piece of musical fluff. But getting it up to speed reduced me to tears! It also gave me an epiphany of immense power that transformed my technique. Suddenly I could play faster than I had ever thought possible, and I could do so with a thrilling ease! This epiphany emerged from the spluttering frustration I felt over my inability to play these sixteenth notes at Le Couppey's metronome marking of 144. It dawned on me that I couldn’t play fast enough because I was tripping over my own fingers when I used the overly articulated technique of moving the fingers by the lift, throw, relax method. This superfluous motion creates an impenetrable barrier, a speed wall, as does playing legato scales by passing the thumb under the palm, when shifting hand position up and down the keyboard. So I found another way-which I’ve since learned was known to every pianist who ever achieved prodigious speed. Here’s how to bring this piece up to speed with ease: Be sure to practice this piece with each hand alone. For each group of sixteenth notes, gently place the four fingers down simultaneously, to get the feel. Think of your arm, from elbow to fingertips, as something like a kitchen utensil, such as a spatula. Moving your right arm as a unit, place your finger tips down into the key bed, depressing all four notes at once, as a block chord. Make sure that all the fingers remain stiff (not rigid with tension, but just stiff enough to resist collapsing upwards.) Slowly lift and then play each group by placing all the fingers down with a rotation of your forearm, calm and relaxed, with the fingers rolling through the notes at the speed of a brief snare drum roll: Rrrrip! To rip through this group of notes like this takes no more effort than to place those four fingers down, calmly, all at once! Then, with a quick shift up or down the keyboard to get into position for the next group, that’s the whole trick for playing such passages with astonishing speed and ease! It takes time and effort to get the knack here, but the result can be transformative and thrilling! As for my adaptation of this study, I believe it offers intermediate advanced players the chance to enjoy a great leap in technique like the one I experienced, and also offers a piece of music that one might not blush to play outside the practice room-perhaps bringing it at least into the living room for a soirée, if not into the concert hall. To make this adaptation, I wrote a grumbly bass line with lungs, and nice fat chords to flesh out most of the skinny little triads that accompany the original study’s fast passages. I added a brooding, chromatic introduction that features as a melody the accompanimental figure of a broken triad that Le Couppey wrote a few times on the second page, in various inversions. I employed this broken chord figure several more times in both hands, and also added a little coda, sprinkled with sparkle. Playing time is about 1 minute and 30 seconds.

I composed this piece about couple months ago, about February 2022, with a title of: “Congklak and YoYo†Starting when I was inspired by two popular Indonesian traditional children's games called Congklak and Yo-Yo. Congklak is also known as Mancala in other countries. The history of Congklak game came from a long way- originated from the Middle East to Africa and finally spread to Asia. In Indonesia, the game was at first only played by the young girls from the Javanese nobility families. With the passage of time, Congklak game's popularity grew and was widely played by common people. On the other hand, 'Yo-Yo' is a game using a toy that consists of a circular object and a long piece of string tied into it in such a way that the object can be made to go up and down by manipulating the string. Girls would be playing Congklak together while the boys playing Yo-Yo. I was so drawn to both games because they were both such entertaining games to play amongst friends. So I decided to translate my fascination of the games into my piano composition. After understanding deeper on how to play the game of YoYo, I was inspired to put on ‘ascending and descending notes’ as a way to interpret and emulate the YoYo's up and down movements. To illustrate the game of Congklak, I used ‘staccatos’ and ‘ornaments’ to emulate the sound of seeds moving from one hole to another in a rotating sequence. Moreover, I was able to use different kinds of musical techniques to express different moods. I applied D Major to create an exciting nuance of playing together, and spiced it up with the touch of Javanese Scale which represents the Javanese Gamelan sounds that are usually transcribed into Western notations. Some of the pieces are solo piano and others feature duets with Mitch Iimori on English horn, oboe, and guitar (but not all at the same time!). The two musicians are obviously exceptionally comfortable and in tune with each other, and the results can be stunning. Very classical in scope and structure, the music is reflective of the natural surroundings of Ms Stevens’ home in the Colombia Gorge region of northern Oregon. The first eight of the fourteen tracks make up the Seasons Suite, a group of lyrical compositions inspired by the various times of year in a remote area of eastern Oregon. The other six pieces also have themes of nature and serenity.The Seasons Suite begins with Colors Change, obviously about the transition of summer into fall, but also about the concept of change as we grow. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of leaves swirling in the ceaseless wind of that area. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing!In Clouds, Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot! Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite. On Summit, Iimori trades his woodwinds for guitar in a gentle, sweeping duet with the piano. Waning Star is a gorgeous piano solo that has a peaceful grace and quiet serenity - a favorite. Reach For the Stars is a piano solo that has an uplifting sense of moving forward and reaching out. Dawn closes the CD with a warm and soothing confection. The piano is accompanied by light percussion, bass, and washes of synth strings. Full of hope and optimism without being sugarcoated, this piece is spellbinding in its gentle way.

Moderator Louis Barabbas wrote about Ausente for the BBC blog Fresh On The Net nr. 305 (19 November 2018), http://freshonthenet.co.uk/2018/11/faves305 Described as 'somewhere between classical music and new tango' the artist’s phrasing here is telling: somewhere rather than something. For in Juan Maria Solare’s Ausente (absent) we are certainly transported. Each angular phrase jutting up like stone columns or distended stalactites in a limey cave. The trickling thrust of its furtive intent feels somehow elemental yet focused through an urban noir prism, drops of heavy water in varying temperatures, some icicles and some steam, shards of smoky light poking around slow moving fan blades and between the rusty teeth of ancient window grills, monstrous warped shadows cast up from humble orphaned minutiae. Music as beautiful and unsettling as it is hard to dance to. The idea of dancing this piece was a surprise for me, since tango music doesn't need to be danced to (you can also just listen to it). But if you wonder how this tango would appear danced, imagine it is not called tango but contemporary ballet rooted in tango - and suddenly you find ways of dancing it... provided an open-minded choreographer is on board! If someone wants to dance this music in the style of the tango of 1920, they will have a hard time. I wrote it out note for note, and even included fingering and sustain pedal suggestions. I also included jazz chord symbols for those of you that either like to know what harmonies I was thinking, or want to add their own ideas based on those chords. The chords I used are pretty much based on the original harmony. When I started out arranging for solo piano I was especially curious about how to create a latin groove underneath a melody. I studied bossa and samba music as well as cuban music for that. The rumba is a great style to start with. That's also the bases for this arrangement. About the song I'll Be Home For ChristmasI have a very special relationship to this song. I first heard it after moving to the United States from Germany and spending my first Christmas in Chicago. On that Christmas Eve I was all alone for the first time, and when I turned on the radio this song came on. I don't easily cry, bad that was one of those moments when the floodgates just open up. It is such a sentimental song. And the closing lyrics I'll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams are just so emotional in this context.Enjoy!

The right Hand is in the D (minor) 5-finger position, Left Hand is in the Middle C position. A Warm-up exercise reinforces the right-hand D position and the left-hand Middle C position—there's also, a “Push-Up” exercise to strengthen the 4th finger of each hand.This patriotic march uses half notes, quarter notes, 8th notes, and quarter rests and it includes dynamic contrast as the melody emerges, shared between both hands. The arrangement includes ascending and descending steps and skips with contrasting legato and staccato techniques in an altogether exciting marcato style. Original lyrics can be used to help with memorization. This march would be a great addition to the end-of-year piano recital or even a piano competition.Merry Go Round is also Primer or Early Level 1. In Middle-C hand position the gentle Waltz Time (3/4) brilliantly compliments the March and offers dynamic contrast and staccato technique. Students will enjoy the parallel motion contrasted to contrary motion with moving 8th notes in one hand against dotted half notes in the other hand. This arrangement invites a focus on musical expression that won't go unnoticed in a recital or contest setting.
