I wrote this piece for Halloween this since I wanted to try writing something that is a little bit spooky and eerie. Initially, I used one of my old ideas from a while ago to be used as the main motif/idea for the piece but it wasn’t really what I was going for. Instead of just creating something entirely different, I decided to incorporate this old idea with a motif that I would make now for the piece.I first created the chord progression that is heard at the beginning and then I created the melody that is heard later. This is then when the old motif comes in. It is very different from the new idea and so it creates a good contrast and keeps the piece interesting. It was good playing around with bring the 2 different motifs in and out and the combining them later in the piece to create a new motif. I took some inspiration from ‘Every 27 years’ or the ‘IT Theme’ with the light hearted melody and the darker overtones. One of my favourite things to do in compositions is begin really simple but then build up the tension and excitement as I have done in this piece.

The Nocturne is an expedition into almost forgotten memories with overtones of hope as well as resignation and melancholia. It has been described as the feeling one has on a cold winters’ day when the sun almost shines for a brief moment, then is gone forever into the frozen darkness of night, never to return. Originally written with orchestral accompaniment as the second movement of the Piano Concerto #2 in C minor, this arrangement for solo piano was made at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue, and has been recognized at the MTAC annual convention in 2007.

The dream unfolds, leading us back eventually to a restatement of the main theme, presented in its final form, ending with a calm quietude. The Rondo Scherzando opens with a fanfare that leads directly to principal theme. This somewhat unruly passage with cinematographic overtones leads to a post-modern fantasy that feels like latter-day jazz meditation. The reverie unfolds, leading us to a quasi-humorous semi-bizarre circus-like rendering of the scherzando theme, presented as an episode in a pantheon of unlikely, unexpected and unanticipated circumstances, that dwindles away quietly into a deceptively calm serenity. Subsequent passages turn the main theme over in a variety of different permutations until finally it returns in full regalia to the opening fanfare, this time presented as a final coda that concludes the piece. Originally written with orchestral accompaniment as the third movement of the Piano Concerto #1 in Bb minor, this arrangement for solo piano was made at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue, and has been recognized at the MTAC annual convention.

The trick is to hold the pedal down during those dissonances. To make it easier, I marked down all the pedaling to make it as easy as possible to follow along. Then we take out the guess work :) Normally I wouldn’t mark down the pedaling (since it comes so naturally to most pianists) but in this case the pedal is key to achieving this chime-like sound. Sydney is a master at creating musical landscapes which evoke strong imagery.A natural composer, Stevens finished her music composition degree after years of honing her artistry in the absence of outside influences. Stevens also studied music composition at University of York, England and with composer and recording artist Bill Douglas in Boulder, Colorado. This is a short piano piece that I wrote back in 1985, as a young teenager growing up in the country of Lebanon during the civil war. Initially, the piece was performed as a vocal/piano number and sung in Armenian. Over the years, it has been sung and played on various occasions. It's suitable for piano players of intermediate level and is ideal to be performed as a solo at the end of a concert. The music is calm with deep overtones and constantly changing chords and harmonies. Earlier this year, during one of the Covid-19 lockdowns in our country, I used the opportunity of being home to record a piano album, Peaceful. 'Tonight' is one of the songs on this album. You can find it on all online music platforms.

This early intermediate solo piano piece (3:30) begins sotto voce, a single voice, but soon builds. The contemplative quality is achieved, in part, by rubato phrasing and generous pedal throughout. Ominous, tragic, and heroic are all accurate descriptors. Performers should not count the beats metronomically. Rather, each end of phrase should be held and released like a breath: imprecise but with a natural flow.
