As I began to discover the many wonders of Classical music in high school, one of my early favorite pieces was Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor. The first movement was the inspiration for this prelude, (though that may not be entirely clear to the listener). The music has a somewhat sinister feel to it, as though it is the background score to a murder mystery. An old mansion filled with suspects…and time is running out.

This dichotomy is represented in the music by moments of poignant melody contrasted with sinuous, chromatic chords. If you’ve ever seen Sunset Boulevard, Laura, Double Indemnity, or Gilda, you will understand what I was trying to capture in this work.

The 5/4 meter contributes to the quality of heartbreak felt throughout the piece as though it is difficult to place one foot in front of the other in order to move past the overwhelming grief. The melody grows from a single line in the right hand, adding another voice and culminating in large chords that express the full magnitude of loss.

A very dramatic work from the opening dissonant chords in the right hand to the final, unresolved chord at the end. The middle section offers a little relief from the dark tone of the piece and makes wonderful use of hand crossing technique, as the left hand crosses over the right to play in the upper register. As it reaches a peak, there is a sudden pause, followed by a twisting descent back to the opening material and one last unanswered question.

There is a lullaby-like character to this prelude…though it is a slightly quirky and somewhat poignant lullaby, to be sure. Right from the beginning, the melody can’t decide whether the prelude is in A-flat major or minor and this question continues throughout. After some unexpected turns in the harmony, the piece finally decides upon the major key and the music guides the listener to a place of quiet reverie, eventually drifting off to sleep.

This is my third Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. The Prelude is designed as a little showmanship piece as it should only be played with the right hand. Unlike most of my Preludes which are entirely original works, this one has an echo of J.S. Bach running through it. The captain calls for the sails to be furled lest they be torn to shreds by the gale force winds. They have endured many storms before, but this is unlike any The Tempest has encountered. The men try to lift their spirits with tales of what has come before and the acts of heroism which have helped them to survive. Their bravado is cut short as the storm intensifies. Lightning flashes across the sky and they realize now that there may be no coming back from this voyage. The swells grow ever larger and cracks can be heard throughout the ship as support beams and masts give way under the tremendous stress. There is no hope of reaching the safety of land as she begins to take on water, but the crew does not abandon their posts…they do not know the meaning of surrender. A final series of cracks can be heard as The Tempest slips beneath the waves into the waiting abyss.

This is the second Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. Attention to dynamic contrast is important in this simple march-like piece as a gradual shift from the quietest to loudest dynamic should be heard each time the theme is heard. No expense should be spared in the final iteration of the theme in terms of dynamics and while there is a metronome marking at the start it is a guideline, the piece should be neither fast nor slow but with a simple adherence to the idea of the 'martellato' direction. This piece is rather simple except for the accel. section at the end which requires some finesse, however for a beginner pianist it should not be too much of a challenge. Performance time should be roughly 2 minutes.
