This is my third Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. The Prelude is designed as a little showmanship piece as it should only be played with the right hand. Unlike most of my Preludes which are entirely original works, this one has an echo of J.S. Bach running through it. This Prelude is not too challenging for young pianists and only requires a sense of rhythm and strength in the right hand. This piece would be suitable for any beginner pianist with some skill and is roughly 1 1/2 minutes in performance.

The original arrangement of the notes are provided for comparison. Â This piece was written for the sight reading test at the piano competition at the Paris Conservatory in 1913. The harmony is definitely of the 20th Century with flexible rhythm and a unmistakenly with a Ravel sound albeit a simple piece comparatively.It will serve as a good introductory lesson to Ravel's style.Bonus piece is by yours truly.

Published by Niska Music Publishing (A0.1248123). There is a storm brewing on the horizon and the ship is starting to be tossed about by waves which can be heard rolling in the left hand. The captain calls for the sails to be furled lest they be torn to shreds by the gale force winds. They have endured many storms before, but this is unlike any The Tempest has encountered. The men try to lift their spirits with tales of what has come before and the acts of heroism which have helped them to survive. Their bravado is cut short as the storm intensifies. Lightning flashes across the sky and they realize now that there may be no coming back from this voyage. The swells grow ever larger and cracks can be heard throughout the ship as support beams and masts give way under the tremendous stress. There is no hope of reaching the safety of land as she begins to take on water, but the crew does not abandon their posts…they do not know the meaning of surrender. A final series of cracks can be heard as The Tempest slips beneath the waves into the waiting abyss.

Prelude 2 in A Minor Aolian from 24 Preludes for the Piano in Major and Minor Modes by composer Brian Golden   The creative concept in writing these preludes is to provide a link to past preludes written for the keyboard, and in particular to the works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.  While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.  In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.

This is my fourth Prelude from my set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. Where most of my preludes are original works this Prelude bears a resemblance to J.S. Bach's own C minor Prelude. It is not meant as a copy in any way but was only inspired by the work at a time when I was only just discovering Classical music. This is a little more difficult than the earlier Preludes so would be suited for a more intermediate pianist and is roughly 1 minute in performance.

It is strongly melodic and shows some influence from both late romanticism and impressionism, while maintaining an individual style. The work can be coupled with the companion piece Prelude in Eb ('Neo-Rhapsody'), with which it shares some material. Other Preludes and piano pieces by Robert A. Howard are also available via SMP.

This is the fifth Prelude from my set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. In the way that my fourth Prelude was unintentionally inspired by J.S. Bach, so is this Prelude unintentionally inspired by Rachmaninov's C# minor Prelude. This work was written when I was discovering Classical music for the first time but any performers should be aware of the simplicity of harmonies that I explore in this Prelude. This is a simple piece and would be suited for any young pianist and performance is roughly 4 minutes.

This is the second Prelude from my first set of 24 Preludes for Solo Piano. Attention to dynamic contrast is important in this simple march-like piece as a gradual shift from the quietest to loudest dynamic should be heard each time the theme is heard. No expense should be spared in the final iteration of the theme in terms of dynamics and while there is a metronome marking at the start it is a guideline, the piece should be neither fast nor slow but with a simple adherence to the idea of the 'martellato' direction. This piece is rather simple except for the accel. section at the end which requires some finesse, however for a beginner pianist it should not be too much of a challenge. Performance time should be roughly 2 minutes.
