Flying a Kite evokes the feeling of the wind pulling on a kite as it swoops and glides on a breezy spring afternoon. This piece is written at an elementary level and is played on all black keys. Hands cross multiple times. Students will learn to bring out a left-hand melody that passes from register to register. Hands do move to different positions. This piece is easy to teach by rote. (With a purchased copy of the music, a second version is included that has been transposed to the key of F, putting all the notes on white keys.) Quarter notes are the smallest note value. In this text, the author invites the Holy Spirit to transform her life by opening her eyes, her mouth, her ears. Each stanza ends with “illumine me, Spirit divine!†May that be our motto every day of our lives! The piano arrangement is structured in three sections (one style for each verse). In the first section the hands stay close to the middle register and the voicing is modest. And the oom-pah-pah rhythms will give it a light bounce that will bring a smile to whoever plays or listens. On the second verse the hands move to a higher register where the music suddenly becomes more delicate. Think of a music box! Lastly, on the third verse we pull all the stops! This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

These seven short pieces were composed in the early months of 1976 as imitations of some of the composers and musical styles of the early twentieth century. They were never performed or published at the time. They are useful as didactic studies for student pianists. The seven pieces areI. Intonatione In the Whole-Tone ScaleII. Prélude and Nocturne in ModesIII. An Impression of ImpressionismIV. An Imitation of Roy HarrisV. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting MetersVI. Ragtime BitonalityVII. Diatonic Waltz Program Notes: The Intonatione In the Whole-Tone Scale recalls the Renaissance Italian musical form that evolved into the prèlude in later organ music, as well as the use of Italian forms in the atonal music of Arnold Schoenberg, and some neo-Baroque composers of the twentieth century. In contrast, the whole-tone scale is reminiscent of generally tonal composers, including Debussy. The Martial Prèlude and Nocturne in Modes recalls the many pre-twentieth century pairings of preludes with fugues and other forms. The pairing with a nocturne evokes an air of Romanticism. The Martial Prèlude is a march-like fanfare, in Lydian mode on C. The Chopinesque Nocturne is in Phrygian mode, on E flat. An Impression of Impressionism evokes some of Debussy’s Preludes pour Piano, including a suggestive title at the bottom of the page, as Debussy himself did. For the young pianist aiming to master the works of Debussy, the arpeggio patterns, block chords, and sequential motives will prove helpful as introductory exercises. An Imitation of Roy Harris was inspired by the occasion in 1976 when James Siddons heard Roy Harris speaking in person about his compositions. Siddons was impressed by Harris’ youth in Oklahoma, and how the solidity of American rural life shaped Harris’ symphonic music. When taking questions at the end of the lecture, a young composer asked Harris about his creative methods when composing music. Well, Harris responded, You don’t pull up a potato just to see if its growing. Adding Chord-Tones While Shifting Meters is a technical exercise that is nonetheless fun to listen to, and fun to play. A student pianist should be asked to analyze the harmony in this piece, and to describe what shifts are taking place when the musical meter (as well as phrasing and rhythm patterns) change. The echoes of Stravinsky and Bartók should be apparent to the listener and pianist. Ragtime was not regarded as art music of the same caliber as Stravinsky and Schoenberg, or even Copland and Gershwin, until the 1970s. The inclusion of ragtime in these seven pieces would not have been accepted by composers of the early twentieth century, Stravinsky excepted. Ragtime Bitonality explores how such piano music might have sounded had major composers of the 1900-1920 era taken an interest in its march-like vitality. There is even a touch of atonality! In contrast to the powerful rhythms and juxtaposed tonal relations in much early twentieth-century music, there were works by many composers that continued familiar melodic patterns and balanced forms, offering musical relief in a turbulent era in music history. The Diatonic Waltz is offered here as a quiet, peaceful conclusion to our tour of musical styles in classical music of a century ago. The Rondo alla ingharese quasi un capriccio in G major, Op. 129 is a piano rondo by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is better known by the title Rage Over a Lost Penny, Vented in a Caprice. This title appears on the autograph manuscript, but not in Beethoven's hand, and has been attributed to his friend Anton Schindler. It is a favorite with audiences and is frequently performed as a showpiece. Robert Schumann wrote of the work that it would be difficult to find anything merrier than this whim... It is the most amiable, harmless anger, similar to that felt when one cannot pull a shoe from off the foot, citing the work as an instance of Beethoven's earthliness against those fixated upon a transcendental image of the composer. This new edition also contains a brief biography of Beethoven, some historical information about the piece, and a facsimile of a portion of the original manuscript. The Dreaming Sea was my first paid composition commission, a piece I wrote in April 2020. For the composition commission, my author friend Sterling Wisniewski requested me to score a short story of his, with the score I provided being expected to tell the story of the words through music and accompany original artwork. His short story is included as follows:A cardboard boat sifts the surface of the sea. A little girl,eyes closed, arms wide and crowned with a paper hat, stands at the front of the deck. Akëda is based on the prayer El Maleh Rakhamim which is one of two main Jewish liturgies commemorating the deceased (the other one is the Kaddish.) The music is written in a free, single movement, improvisatory-like form. The traditional eastern-European melody of El Maleh is the main text, which pulls liked a thread throughout the movement. The different musical gestures surrounding and illustrating it, function as commentaries (Midrashim.) Simulating the journey of a prayer, from the abyss upward to the highest height, so does the music in this movement cruise from the lowest range all the way up to the top octaves of the instrument. The Hebrew word Akëda means binding or sacrificial offering as the binding of the sacrifice in the story of Abraham and Isaac: ..., and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. (Genesis, 22,9.) The prayer of El Maleh Rakhamim appears in several different versions. The version used for Akëda is the one specifically chanted during Yom Hashoah in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

Having spent the morning sitting in the sun while some females searched his fur for fleas, he is now in a hilariously expressive mood. Swinging from the branches of a huge African tree, he mocks everything and everybody around him, mimicking a scornful dance with his weird movements and giving the impression of being a funny clown in a circus. When he comes across a car loaded with passengers on a narrow road between the trees, he jumps straight onto the bonnet of the vehicle, pressing his face on the front window and pulling faces to amuse the surprised audience inside. He grins when they feed him oranges through a small opening of a nearly closed window and refusing to leave, he sits on the bonnet for almost an hour, filling up his tummy and satisfying his taste buds with the juicy citrus fruits. This larger work is a one-movement sonata, while at the same time encompassing 4 movements within its structure. As a double-function form, 'Echoes' also employs contrapuntal techniques, bridging the development and recapitulation with a four-voice fugue. The compositional techniques used depict several abstract mathematical concepts. Tonal stability is increased and decreased throughout, particularly in the recitative sections. This changing of tonal stability depicts the intersecting of dimensions. A being existing in a 2-dimensional world, such as an insect on a flat surface, may occasionally get a glimse of 3 dimensions when a 3-dimensional being or object passes through the second dimension. This glimpse, however, on the part of the 2-dimensional being, is incomplete and does not accurately represent a world of a higher dimension. Similarly, at the intersection of our world with an even higher spatial dimension, we would only catch incomplete glimpses of this higher dimension. These polytonal and structural elements depict another concept. While a square is 2-dimensional, and a cube is 3-dimensional, it is possible for an object to exist in between 2 and 3 dimensions (by dividing logarithms). This idea of a fractional dimension is explored as thematic material is pulled between tonal centers, but never truly settling.

As we near the start of the race, the energy intensifies with arpeggiations; requiring dexterity and coordination. A rhythmically charged left-hand ostinato signifies the beginning of the race, and our pulse intensifies. A modulation raising the theme by a half-step signifies the racers maneuvering around a turn in the track. We hit the final lap with a race to the finish line that leaves the performer and audience breathless!
