Vignettes is a set of 5 short (2 or 3-page) late-intermediate piano pieces that introduce unique aspects of Maurice Ravel's piano writing that students tend to find challenging. Given that Ravel himself wrote very little at the intermediate level for solo piano (except the recently rediscovered Prelude in A minor), I saw a great need for appropriate Ravel-preparatory repertoire.Notes on the Pieces in Vignettes1. Réminiscences d’EspagneThis work is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few. This piece also recalls my time as a cruise ship duo pianist aboard the ms Maasdam, which visited five ports in Spain.2. Le jardin des papillons (The Butterfly Garden)Le jardin des papillons is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in pieces including the Sonatine, Le tombeau de Couperin, and others. It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: sometimes-awkward hand and arm crossings, extended tertian chords (9th/11th/13th voicings), whole tone sonorities, and some modal writing, to name a few, while still maintaining a clarity of voicing that students will find in Ravel's own music.3. Le jardin englouti (The Sunken Garden)Le jardin englouti is an homage to Maurice Ravel's minuets (like the middle movement of the Sonatine and the minuet from Le tombeau de Couperin). This piece was inspired by the Sunken Garden, a former landmark on the Indiana University campus that sat across the street from the practice building in which I taught dozens of piano students, coached numerous singers, and learned piles of solo and collaborative repertoire before moving away in 2019. The Biology Building greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.4. Point PeléePoint Pelée is an homage to Maurice Ravel's toccata-style movements, like the finale of the Sonatine or the toccata from Le tombeau de Couperin. This piece can be programmed with Le jardin des papillons and Le jardin englouti to form a three-movement suite that roughly corresponds to the Sonatine. This movement was inspired by Point Pelée National Park, in Ontario, Canada, a frequent roosting spot for monarch butterflies making the long migration from Canada to southern Mexico. In this piece I tried to capture the flutters of the roosting monarchs' wings as they'd settle into the trees at night and venture out across Lake Erie after resting. À la manière d'une PavaneÀ la manière d'une Pavane is an homage to Maurice Ravel's piano writing as shown in his Pavane pour une infante défunte and the Pavane from the Mother Goose suite. It combines Baroque-reminiscent polyphony with the clarity and delicacy of articulation required more widely in the Ravel repertoire.

An upcoming relocation will allow me to build my own butterfly garden in my new home, and I can't wait to create my own butterfly-friendly outdoor paradise filled with native plants and wildflowers. I hope my garden will have as many butterflies flitting through it as are depicted in the 32nd-note passages in this piece!

The Jordan Hall greenhouse now sits on the former Sunken Garden site.Because the Wells Quad dorms are right next door, I hear this piece as a recollection of a social dance night that the dorms probably held frequently back when the Sunken Garden existed. Wells Quad served as a classroom/academic office complex for years after Jordan Hall was built in the 50s, but they are now back-converting the buildings into dorms again. (As of this writing, two of the buildings now serve as dorms, while the other two are still academic buildings. While I was pursuing my doctoral minor in composition, the composition professors' studios were almost all in Wells Quad's Sycamore Hall. They upgraded to the East Studio Building as soon as they could, though!).

In his book Impressionism, author Pierre Courthion writes how Ravel's Mother Goose Suite seems like a musical commentary to Monet's Waterlilies. Len has titled his transcription - Reflections - containing the main movements from Mother Goose (Ma Mère l’Oye), with beautifully crafted segue's that create uninterrupted flow from movement to movement. Ravel originally wrote this ballet as a charming, delicate and imaginative suite of fairytale pieces. This transcription is a continuous work featuring - (i) the Prelude, (ii) Pavane de la Belle au Bois dormant (Pavane of the Sleeping Beauty), (iii) Les entretiens de la Belle et de la Bête (Conversation of Beauty and the Beast), (iv) Petit Poucet (Little Tom Thumb), and Le jardin féerique (The Fairy Garden). It is suitable for the more advanced (ABRSM grade 6/7) pianist, but will be appreciated by all lovers of Ravel, and Ma Mère l’Oye in particular. From my in-progress collection of intermediate and late-intermediate piano pieces in Impressionist styles, this is an homage to Maurice Ravel's Habañera-styled pieces (including the Vocalise-étude, the Habañera from the Rapsodie Espagnole, and others).It introduces techniques that Ravel frequently uses but that less-than-advanced students rarely encounter in repertoire at their level: numerous hand and arm crossings, 3-against-4 polyrhythms as evident in the habañera, very high registers, dissonances like German 7th chords and diminished thirds, and Spanish-flavored modal writing, to name a few.Since most currently published collections of Impressionist-style pedagogical repertoire focus on Claude Debussy's language, this piece is a welcome addition to the literature and will help bridge the gaps between standard teaching repertoire and pieces like Ravel's Sonatine, while also exposing students to a new, rich, and inviting tonal language that will inspire them to seek out more of Ravel's work.

The second of the three Minimalist tributes to French composers takes some of Ravel's favorite chords, the minor 6/9 chord, the augmented major 7th, and a fascinating hybrid chord at the outer reaches of tonality that he used in the Valses Noble et Sentimentales, a minor/major 7th chord, but with an augmented fifth, spelled here as C-D# Ab-B, even though a more proper spelling should be C-Eb-G#-B. The chord has been divided into two 6ths, and is clearer to read and play in this spelling. My apologies to Lucien Garban, Ravel's editor, who would not have let him make this concession to convenience! So, arpeggiated figures in the treble accompany deep octaves in the bass in the opening and closing sections. This minor-major/augmented chord is used in the middle section, with a diminished chord slowly played out in octaves: a nod to Ravel's oft-used octotonic or diminished scale writing. Approx running time is just under 5 mins. Pedaling is clearly indicated throughout. Hand-crossing only at the finale. MBB.

This is a beautiful piece that all pianists should learn, as it is very doable, considering the quality of the music, which is more musically rather than technically challenging. The left hand accompaniment seems to consist of two triple time in a bar while the time signature is actually triple (per bar), creating an interesting aural experience when the melody is played against the meter. The simple but subtle melodic line is harmonised with slight dissonances unique to Ravel. The tension caused by the unusual rhythm and the dissonances makes it a beautiful and exotic piece. .

Some large chords have been compromised but all essential harmony is present. Finally, I have re-voiced a few areas where hands collide in the original to make it easier to negotiate.It is advanced Intermediate is level although a competent Intermediate pianist may be ok with it. Best to look at the youtube to judge which has the whole score. It is 5 pages and roughly 3 mins 15 in length.It really is a wonderful piece- especially used for concert's weddings, recitals, encore, incidental, recitals etc.
