The themes included in this collection were kept for a long time in a music manuscript notebook that traveled with me around the globe (Astrakhan - Turku - Vladivostok - Qingdao) and crossed the equator twice. The spirit of travel impregnated the pages of this notebook and inspired me for the search of fresh musical ideas. These different themes sound close to near-jazz style, and they are written for free performance. Based on harmony and melodic line, the performer is free to improvise and interpret themes to his liking, add new instruments and create his own arrangements. Historically, in jazz, the main melodic idea of ​a piece is called a theme. There is a theme, so you can improvise. Following this tradition, I have named my collection 7 Silver Themes.

Recognized at a young age for his virtuosity and technical finesse as both a flatpicking and fingerpicking guitarist, Tony Ferrizzi-now 33-has matured into a musician capable of great feats in both jazz and classical arenas. Recognized nationally for his improvisational ability and adventurous graphical scores, Tony was the recent recipient of a generous private grant, which allowed him the opportunity to-for the first time-contribute composed, traditional scores to the art music idiom. Serenade No. 1 represents the efforts of a talented creative musician in a compositional space that many such musicians avoid. It is also Ferrizzi’s first piece for solo piano. The theoretical aim of this music has to do with a synthesis of impressionistic harmony and modern jazz musical structures. It is as indebted to 60s-era Miles Davis as it is to Ravel (and the implicit claim is that there is in the end quite a lot relating the fields that those composers worked in).

Fun tune to learn and improvise over. I used it in church for a prelude and it was well received with a jamming drummer. Fun Stuff.

This late intermediate solo piano meditation (3 min) belongs to a set of twelve meditations and is reminiscent of Ravel or Poulenc but with a more contemporary harmonic sensibility. Sweet, tender, and triumphant--this piece has heart through and through. This may be my personal favorite of the entire set.The performer should use pedal throughout and take careful notice of the tenuto markings which, in this arrangement, represent tones which should be brought out. The tempo is flexible and rubato should be employed to maximum effect. Although not too technically difficult, some pianists may need to practice the jumps in the left-hand accompaniment during the coda section. .

Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio.
