Dances from Terpsichore (Michael Praetorius)These are eleven of the most well-known dances of the Renaissance, selected from the famous collection entitled Terpsichore, pubished in 1612 by Michael Praetorius. They are sure to be a welcome addition to the recorder player's repertoire. The notes of the recorder part have been kept well within the intermediate range.By the time Michael Praetorius published his dance collection, he was one of the most famous musicians in Germany. The name is pronounced “terp-SI-cory†and rhymes with the word “hickoryâ€. The original publication consisted of 312 dances in four, five and six parts. Although the dances were probably conceived for string ensemble Praetorius was well aware that in practice, they would be played by any instruments that happened to be available.These arrangements for recorder (or recorders) and keyboard are based on the original 1612 publication. The music sounds more authentic using a harpsichord rather than a piano, or the harpsichord sound of a digital keyboard. The keyboard part may be interpreted quite freely with ornamentation added as appropriate. During the Renaissance, it was common practice to combine separate dances to create something of more substantial duration. A similar practice is used in these arrangements which are as follows: 1. Three Gavottes; 2. Two Ballets; 3. Two Bourées; 4. Two Courantes and 5. Two Voltas. The audio sample contains numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Ballet des Coqs, or Rooster Dance, is from a collection called Terpsichore, which is a compendium of more than 300 instrumental dances published in 1612 by the German composer Michael Praetorius. In his introduction, Praetorius takes credit for arranging the music rather than composing the tunes.The collection is based on French dance repertoire of the time and contains some notes that relate to instrumentation. However, Praetorius does not specify which instruments should play particular parts. This was one of my favourite Praetorius pieces, and so I transcribed it in order that it might be played at the keyboard without having to read the original publication with its five parts, varied clefs and difficult notation.

La collection ANACROUSE offre aux pianistes novices et confirmes un large choix d’œuvres classiques, allant de la Renaissance à l’epoque moderne.<br><br>Proposer tout à la fois des « incontournables » du repertoire classique et des pièces de compositeurs parfois oublies, toutes d’une valeur pedagogique indeniable, tels sont les objectifs que nous nous sommes fixes. Chaque pièce, vendue à l’unite, a fait l’objet d’un travail editorial attentif, tant sur le plan de l’etablissement du texte musical que de sa gravure, afin de garantir aux musiciens les conditions indispensables aux plaisirs tires du commerce frequent de ces œuvres.<br><br>Les partitions sont proposees sous la forme d’ouvrages traditionnels (feuillets papier), et disponibles egalement par telechargement.<br><br><br><br>Les quatre saisons (opus 8, n° 1-4) est un ensemble de quatre concertos pour violon soliste et orchestre de chambre à cordes, compose par Antonio Vivaldi, et qui ouvre le recueil La bataille entre l'harmonie et l'invention. Bien qu’edite en 1725 à Amsterdam, la composition de ces quatre concertos est certainement anterieure de quelques annees.<br><br>Cette œuvre est l'une des plus representative du genre Concerto, c'est aussi certainement la composition la plus connue d’Antonio Vivaldi.<br> Le printemps est le nom que porte le concerto n° 1 en mi majeur (op. 8, RV 269). Il est se compose de trois mouvements : Allegro, Largo, Allegro.<br>Son introduction, comme le troisième mouvement de l'œuvre (L’Éte), sont les passages les plus celèbres de cet opus.<br>Sur la partition, le compositeur precise les correspondances avec les poèmes, il va même jusqu'à expliciter certains details (aboiements de chien, noms d'oiseaux : coucou, tourterelle, pinson...). L’ensemble de l’œuvre est accompagnee de quatre sonnets decrivant le deroulement des saisons. Voici celui du Printemps :<br><br><br>Allegro<br>Voici le Printemps,<br>Que les oiseaux saluent d'un chant joyeux.<br>Et les fontaines, au souffle des zephyrs,<br>Jaillissent en un doux murmure.<br><br><br>Ils viennent, couvrant l'air d'un manteau noir,<br>Le tonnerre et l'eclair messagers de l'orage.<br>Enfin, le calme revenu, les oisillons<br>Reprennent leur chant melodieux.<br><br>Largo<br>Et sur le pre fleuri et tendre,<br>Au doux murmure du feuillage et des herbes,<br>Dort le chevrier, son chien fidèle à ses pieds.<br><br>Allegro<br>Au son festif de la musette<br>Dansent les nymphes et les bergers,<br>Sous le brillant firmament du printemps.
