My Prelude on the hymn tune Terra Beata (This Is My Father's World) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. It is one of two settings for piano of Terra Beata that I have written. In this setting there are two statements of the melody. The first places the melody in the soprano register with a repeated-note pattern serving as the accompaniment in the left hand. The second places the melody in the bass register moving at half the previous speed and accompanied by a downward moving arpeggiation pattern played by the right hand. The second half of the melody returns to the soprano, harmonized with 4-note chords, and accompanied by rapid downward moving scales played by the left hand. In the final phrase, the pace slows, leading inconclusively to a chord of the 13th on G-flat at mid-phrase, before resuming in the main key of E-flat and ending triumphantly with a repeated-note trumpet-like pattern. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Then, later that afternoon he wrote both the words and the music of Shall We Gather at the River.The arrangement may serve as well as an early goal for a progressing piano student as for an intermediate to advanced player this coming Sunday.The intro announces the tune and calls the first line of the chorus to mind. After setting the meditative mood the first stanza is presented in right hand melody with left hand accompaniment that only occasionallyis rhythmically active beyond beat three. Then, the easily playable key change takes the vision to the bank of the “shining river” by way of a brief, flowing left hand figuration. While out on a winter’s walk one evening, I was thinking through the lovely It Came upon the Midnight Clear, and without any warning, Chopin’s exquisite Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 9, No. 2 kind of crept in and curled itself around the Midnight melody and made itself at home. The result is this gentle mashup of these two beauties in a piano solo.Most of us do not have tons of time to practice, but the original Chopin left hand chords and leaps are daunting, so I have modified the bass notes without losing the composer’s harmonic intentions. Also the original time signature of 12/16 has been changed to 6/8, a more familiar friend and is compatible with It Came upon the Midnight Clear. There are some suggested fingerings in a few places. Use pedal at your trained ear’s discretion.I played this piece as a Prelude for our church Christmas Eve Candlelight Service, and the mood that it set was heavenly. Enjoy, and I hope you or your advancing students enjoy playing this at your next holiday event!

Step-wise melodic motion, and bass tracks treble throughout, except for two places marked with an asterisk. Four-part harmony moving in parallel, as might the two-part organum of the 14th century. But, you'll find these chords rich and smooth, as the colours subtly shift with each rise and fall of the line. About 4 mins, can go even slower, if you want move time for each chord to resonate. Great for liturgical or ceremonial use as well as concert or recital performance.
