Pavo, Latin for peacock, is one of the four Southern Bird constellations, recognised by Dutch navigators Frederick de Houtman and Pieter Dirkzoon Keyser. In Australia it is known as the Saucepan, and is used as a guide for finding south. In myth, the peacock is a sacred bird who pulled the goddess Hera’s chariot. Lush, romantic harmonies expressed in exaggerated fashion depict his colourful tail. From “88 Constellations†a collection by Heather Cattanach featuring one piece of piano music for each of the 88 constellations (to match the number of keys on a standard piano). This piece is a free adaptation and a complete reworking of a study by Felix Le Couppey (1811-1887), from his L'Agilité, Opus 20, 25 Progressive Studies for Mechanism and Light Touch. In its original form, this study was a charming little piece of musical fluff. But getting it up to speed reduced me to tears! It also gave me an epiphany of immense power that transformed my technique. Suddenly I could play faster than I had ever thought possible, and I could do so with a thrilling ease! This epiphany emerged from the spluttering frustration I felt over my inability to play these sixteenth notes at Le Couppey's metronome marking of 144. It dawned on me that I couldn’t play fast enough because I was tripping over my own fingers when I used the overly articulated technique of moving the fingers by the lift, throw, relax method. This superfluous motion creates an impenetrable barrier, a speed wall, as does playing legato scales by passing the thumb under the palm, when shifting hand position up and down the keyboard. So I found another way-which I’ve since learned was known to every pianist who ever achieved prodigious speed. Here’s how to bring this piece up to speed with ease: Be sure to practice this piece with each hand alone. For each group of sixteenth notes, gently place the four fingers down simultaneously, to get the feel. Think of your arm, from elbow to fingertips, as something like a kitchen utensil, such as a spatula. Moving your right arm as a unit, place your finger tips down into the key bed, depressing all four notes at once, as a block chord. Make sure that all the fingers remain stiff (not rigid with tension, but just stiff enough to resist collapsing upwards.) Slowly lift and then play each group by placing all the fingers down with a rotation of your forearm, calm and relaxed, with the fingers rolling through the notes at the speed of a brief snare drum roll: Rrrrip! To rip through this group of notes like this takes no more effort than to place those four fingers down, calmly, all at once! Then, with a quick shift up or down the keyboard to get into position for the next group, that’s the whole trick for playing such passages with astonishing speed and ease! It takes time and effort to get the knack here, but the result can be transformative and thrilling! As for my adaptation of this study, I believe it offers intermediate advanced players the chance to enjoy a great leap in technique like the one I experienced, and also offers a piece of music that one might not blush to play outside the practice room-perhaps bringing it at least into the living room for a soirée, if not into the concert hall. To make this adaptation, I wrote a grumbly bass line with lungs, and nice fat chords to flesh out most of the skinny little triads that accompany the original study’s fast passages. I added a brooding, chromatic introduction that features as a melody the accompanimental figure of a broken triad that Le Couppey wrote a few times on the second page, in various inversions. I employed this broken chord figure several more times in both hands, and also added a little coda, sprinkled with sparkle. Playing time is about 1 minute and 30 seconds.

The piano piece Bad Hombres Jumping Over my Wall While Yelling '¡Arriba!, ¡Arriba!' was composed in Bremen, Germany, in August 2018, for the project 45miniatures by pianist Nick Phillips. The overall character of this piece responds vaguely to Nicholas Phillips' suggestion: playful/childish outbursts, in the form of heckler chords or bad hombre-like non-chord tones. The title depicts a surrealistic, clownesque, ridiculous situation; a dream for some and a nightmare for others.For those totally unaware: the expression Bad Hombres was used by president Donald Trump during the third 2016 United States Presidential Debate. While answering a question about his immigration policy, Donald Trump stated that there were a lot of drug lords in the United States and that they needed to be removed. He concluded his comment by saying we have some bad hombres here and we have to get them out. (thus implying that the responsible of US' drug problems are Latinos)Character and moods: happy, merry, mysterious. About the performance All the piece consists of mini clusters (two minor seconds). The notation can be sometimes obscure (due to the many unavoidable accidentals). To facilitate the reading (deciphering) of the score, the easiest is to follow the highest note of each cluster: they usually form a simple chord. For instance, bar 17 is (melodically speaking) a F7 chord. Got it? L = Left Hand R = Right Hand The verbal comments along the music are not meant to be actually read aloud, but alla mente (like in some Satie's music). It is Cold for Beginner Level The story behind this song:I installed a brand new AC and heating unit at my house during the summer of 2014. The person who installed the system did not do a good job. I had a lot of problems with the brand new ac unit after they came to install it. One of the problems is that every year, when the temperature outside goes down to 30 degrees, the brand new installed heating system would not go above 65 degrees. Normally, it stays at 61 degrees. I was and still am very frustrated about this. This new heating and ac system costs a lot of money. (A person use the same amount of money to buy a nice small car.) Because the temperature has not gone above 65 degrees inside, I have had to wear two sweat shirts, one coat, one feather jacket, two pairs of cotton pants, two pairs of socks, and two warm hats almost every single day for about one month. I have been so cold every winter. A lot of times during the coldest days in the winter, I have to stay in my 1998 Toyota Sienna van. Because it is warmer in my van than in my house. One day, while I was driving, I thought about writing a song about how cold I have been.In this song, I used many seconds including Major 2nd and Minor 2nd. The Major and Minor seconds sound very sharp, like the cold that is cutting through your skin. It is very uncomfortable, and that is the idea behind this song. This PDF is designed for two-sided printing. It is going to look like a sheet music book. This is the reason why there is one blank page in some of the songs. This movement is the fourth of five dance portraits (collectively titled Musique SABA) commemorating the Southern Academy of Ballet Arts (S.A.B.A.) and its performing company, Pas de Vie, of Tallahassee, Florida. The piece originates from 2003 when composed for the dancer Seah Hagan's first piano lesson, devoted to just two notes, at age four. Fittingly enough, the left-hand part embeds musical ciphers suggested by the syllables of her name, as Se-ah using forms of the pitches C and A, including in a simple way playable by the novice. Meanwhile, the right-hand part, as if for the teacher, quotes Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers--a borrowing itself punning since drawn from Casse-noisette (1892). The new, playful waltz lasts about forty seconds.

Years later, I composed a musical work for piano and orchestra - a creative and classic concerto, capturing the Great Wall's grandeur and majestic attraction.My first visit to the Great Wall of China was in 1983 while engaged as a pianist onboard a cruise ship that sailed the waters of Asia. My first impression of seeing the Great Wall and the scenic landscape surrounding it, was one of awe and amazement.At that time, I did not realize the lasting effect this memorable attraction would have on me. As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment III is in a simple ternary shape. The outer sections focus on multiple unrelated arpeggiated reharmonisations of an initial four note motif. The opening section does this via an exploration of flat keys, while the final section does so through a sequence of sharp keys. A contrasting middle section is more chordal but continues to develop the key motif, building to a climax on quartal harmony. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. At crotchet = 126bpm this is equivalent to a delay of 230 milliseconds. Each echo should be slightly quieter than the last but clearly distinct.The performer/sound engineer should feel free to experiment with the spatial location of the original amplified sound and each delay. However, sounds should not be spaced in any way that fragments the combined rhythmic 'flow'.The piece may be played on an electronic keyboard instrument, and the left hand part may be played/doubled with a bass sound such as electric bass guitar.Programme note:'Frayed End' was composed by Paul Burnell in 2000. Composed on November 23, 2015 the length of the work is 3 minutes and 9 seconds approximately in length and composed in Brookville, New York during my first semester as a graduate music composition/music theory student as an independent composition. This arrangement is peppy, but also haunting and soft in the minor parts that build dynamically and chordally to He Is Risen! I end with a triumphant portion of He Lives, ending with the Easter Song again. This is a powerful, dramatic, fun, interesting arrangement for advanced piano soloists that is just right for Easter Sunday offertory, special solo, prelude, or postlude.
