These pieces focus on patterns and shapes that appear over and over. Level One is the easiest at the elementary level and Level Five is the final composition at a late elementary to early intermediate level. Each level has the same skeletal structure with varying modifications to help the student build their skills in reading and playing. As the levels get increasingly difficult, the challenge decreases. Ms. DeLuca found her students taking a new level every one to two weeks and these were beginning level readers! Each level includes a workbook sheet that focuses on the patterns and intervals introduced in each song, so the student can concentrate on specific skills prior to learning the entire piece. Minuet in C is a five-level song that takes the student to a very advanced piece of music in a very short period of time. It amazingly moves from dotted half notes in both hands in Level One to eighth note runs in both hands simultaneously in Level Five. Vain Queen Cassiopeia boasted that her beauty surpassed that of the Nereids (sea nymphs). Poseidon, angered, sent a sea monster to destroy her land. King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia chained their daughter Andromeda to a rock as a sacrifice to the sea monster to appease Poseidon. Luckily, Perseus heroically rescued Andromeda. Cassiopeia’s punishment for her vanity was to spend all of eternity on her throne in the sky, half the year hanging upside down. The 5-star W shape of her throne can be seen in the northern hemisphere sky. You can draw Ws or Ms as per bars 1, 2, 31 and 32 wherever her theme recurs, if you like. This piece is written in Locrian mode, creating a dissonant, dark and unstable mood. This Intermediate Piano Solo is from “88 Constellations†a collection by Heather Cattanach featuring one piece of piano music for each of the 88 constellations (to match the number of keys on a standard piano). Hydra is the biggest of the 88 Constellations. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer catalogued this constellation in the second century. Two Greek legends mention Hydra. The first tells how Heracles (Hercules) fought and killed the nine-headed monstrous predatory snake. The second relates the story of Corvus (the crow) who was commanded to bring water to Apollo, but was distracted, and blamed the water snake for his being late in returning to Apollo with the cup (Crater). In honour of Hydra’s extensive span across the sky, all 88 keys are used. Thus much of the material is chromatic (and also palindromic) but in bars 9, 19 and 29, you can see the approximate shape of the constellation if you join the dots of the noteheads. I have chosen to eschew the use of 8va and 8vb signs, instead opting to show the expanse of all the notes on the keyboard as they appear on the staff. It is easy to play these high and low leger line notes, knowing that they always begin (or end) at the top or bottom of the piano keyboard (i.e. the highest C and the lowest A). Practice Tips: With a bright piano, or one with a heavy touch, this piece may not sound great. The repeated notes in the left hand can be tricky without the right instrument. If you are able to play it, make sure to shape it independently of the right hand melody, which has a mostly constant volume level in the A section (measures 1-16). Note that in measure 16, the left hand pattern changes. Don't feel as though you must count from measure 34 to the end. You can use a lack of pulse to make your audience feel more emotionally attached to your playing. Just make sure that the moving parts of the main theme are still recognizable.

Stephen Porter's project Re-Imagining Debussy required the work to interact in some way with the music or compositional spirit of Debussy. I answered by using some of his technical devices: chords parallelisms, whole-tone scales, brief melodic shapes, central notes and a broad multi-layered texture. 2) Ave VerdiA miniature composed on the death-day of Verdi (27th January 2013). The piece is based on the 7-tone scala enigmatica used by Giuseppe Verdi in his Ave Maria (1889, first from Quattro Pezzi Sacri) and its complement (the missing 5 notes), treated as twelve-tone field. The piece is dedicated to that other Giuseppe: Lupis. The scala enigmatica: [Do - Reb - Mi - Fa# - Sol# - La# - Si] Complement: [Re - Mib - Fa - Sol - La]Original Tone Row: 0 1 4 6 8 10 11 2 3 5 7 9 3) SchubertangoTango music has more to do with Franz Schubert than with any other classical composer. Harmonies and types of melody are extremely similar. Such similarities cease, at the latest, when we come to rhythm. This miniature shows how Schubert's melodies can be flawlessly integrated into the musical language of tango. If one doesn't know the original pieces, you will not even recognize at all that there is a quotation. In the score, the composer kindly tags the sources of the quotations; nevertheless, there is also a hidden quotation (or rather an allusion) that doesn't stem from Schubert: it is the chord progression (not the melody) of a very well known tango of the modern era. Do you find it? The Schubertango was composed in Bremen (Germany) on 28 November 2014 and has a duration of 1 minute. The piece is dedicated to pianist Stephen Porter, in the frame of his project Re-Imagining Schubert, hosted by Vox Novus (New York City) and their cycle Fifteen Minutes of Fame. Juan Maria Solare, born 1966 in Argentina, works currently in Germany as composer, pianist (contemporary & tango) and teaching at the University of Bremen and at the Hochschule fuer Kuenste Bremen.
