Black & White Blues is a classic 12 bar slow blues in the key of C, written for intermediate pianists at about grade 3 ABRSM standard.The key to this piece is to relax into the 4-groups of 3 quarter note feel (12-8 time signature). It can be very tempting to rush - but this is the blues, so think relaxed and laid-back.As it's name suggests, there are quite a few chromatic moments throughout the piece, giving a thorough tour of the piano keys! The right hand melody is echoed by the left hand in the second half of the piece and for a challenge there is a fun 'hands crossing over' moment in the closing bars.Black & White Blues comes with a bluesy play-along backing track to enjoy (also available at SheetMusicPlus), once you've got the hang of it!

Pathetique Sonata (slow mvt) by Beethoven- Simplified versionThis version is with the pianist who doesn't feel quite ready for the full version and would love to play this gorgeous movement. I have arranged it in several ways to make it simpler without changing too much.It has been put into 4/4 instead of 2/4 time to be more user friendly. Also there is nothing greater than an octave in either hand. Inside parts (where appropriate) have been divided between the hands so there are no uncomfortable stretches. All ornaments have been written out in full for the purpose of the arrangement, and the big chords in the middle section have been minimised but keep the power required. The audio is my own recording of the piece.I have listed it as top end Intermediate, (grade 5-6) could manage it.The whole score is on the youtube link to assess suitability- set at intermediate level. It is 4 mins 30 in length.

(Envoi: Very slow, from afar)Nine Preludes (2007) for piano was written for and is dedicated to pianist Marilyn Nonken; it was commissioned byRichard Mason.Although the work is composed as a set of discrete movements, the preludes are very much interconnected, as motivicand developmental ideas run throughout the entire set. The basic musical material (founded upon collections of minorand major thirds) is shared among all nine movements. An elegiac quality runs throughout the work.The first prelude (Flowing) is inspired by the piano music of Johannes Brahms, whose contributions to the instrument’sliterature have been a significant and ongoing influence on my work.The second prelude is fast and bright. Consistent staccato textures are maintained as the two hands intertwine.The third prelude (Funereal) is dedicated to the memory of American composer Donald Martino (1931–2005). The musicrefers very obliquely to Martino’s setting of Robert Herrick’s poems of death and eternity in The White Island (1985).The fourth prelude (Dancing) is light and buoyant. After a melodic middle section, the opening music reverses itself to theend.The fifth prelude (Distant, echoing) is dedicated to Richard and Dee Wilson. Through large blocks of sustained sound (bothquiet and loud), the movement explores certain harmonic colors of the piano.The sixth prelude (Moderate, singing, with humor) is dedicated to English composer Michael Finnissy. The opening ismarked “like an ‘off-kilter’ folk song,†and this original melody is subjected to a variety of transformations and textures.The rhythmic patterns are constantly in flux.The seventh prelude (Slow, very lyrical) is melodic and passionate, with a nocturnal character. The middle builds to anintense climax before dying away.The eighth prelude (March) is spiky and crisp. In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows.The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.†Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs. If the entire set is played, however, the order of thepreludes should not be changed. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862437). A rippling, harp-like accompaniment flows beneath a high treble melody, punctuated by open fifths, decorated with a grace note, down below. How can two hands do all this at once, you might say? Easy, well, sort of easy, anyway. The left hand plays the melody up high AFTER playing the open fifth low, crossing over the stationary right hand. in each measure. The harmony of the right-hand arpeggio changes slowly and subtly as the melody floats above. Some high ledger lines, with note above three lines alphabetically marked for ease of reading. Chromatic harmony with mixed accidentals in right hand. A joy to play, and very pleasing to the listener, I think, anyway... if I don't believe in my music, how can I expect players and teachers to do the same! Lasts about a minute and 45 secs. A faster OR slower tempo yields a more cascading or contemplative effect.

The Etherea Suite, Volume 1 is for intermediate to advanced players who enjoy lyrical, exciting, and showy repertoire, while expressing their imagination through their playing. Players get to musically explore the mountains, the desert, volcanoes, time travel to ancient times, and fight in battle! Volume I of the suite represents three main characters from the sci-fi, fantasy book Trials of the Innermost (release date May 26, 2023). Each movement has a distinct feel and reflects each character's personality. This edition features performance notes written by the composer, including musical elements unique to each movement, fun facts, and personal influences JohnWillard had in mind when creating the work. A graphic of the musical cryptogram system used to make the melodies for each character is featured at the end of the notes. The three movements imitate a sonata, with the overall order of the suite is slow, slow, fast. Some teaching elements in the first movement I. Vayriel: Protector of the Mountains, include: scalar passages (A natural minor scale), shifting hands position, rolled chords, repeated left hand patterns, ornaments, and pedaling. II. Zinvar: Peacemaker of the Volcanic Rifts is more challenging, but has more room for musicality, expression, exploring different touches on the piano, and ethereal use of pedaling, like the sostenuto pedal (if you have one!) The movement opens with a mysterious, wave-like arpeggiated left hand pattern, similar to pieces of Chopin or Rachmaninoff. The B section is practice in using the sostenuto (middle) pedal while playing softly, imitating Gregorian Chant. The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long.What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!Who this arrangement is best suited forI think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later.How I arranged itAs I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions.The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower. Tips for how to learn this arrangementWhen I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.
